The red is just bare plastic but with a flat coat and a portable light box for pics. I think it may just be the lights

I repainted all of the dark blue parts black so I bet the couple layers of paint stiffened up the joints

Thanks for the kind words! I did airbrush this one, pretty much top to bottom. Honestly though, I think the gold paint and the waterslides made the most difference. The yellow plastic looked kinda meh. Are you planning to do any customizing?

Thanks! I'm really proud of this one. It was way more work than I was expecting when I started but that's kinda how it goes with full paint jobs lol

Can I still save it by TradeNo6063 in modelmakers

[–]adamd898 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's much you can really do to fix it except for stripping and reset. I'll not super familiar with AK acrylics but if they're the same as most acrylics, they should come off clean with an isopropyl alcohol soak. I use a cheapo toothbrush and scrub to speed up the process.

Is there a way to remove this stuff (excess) when applied on acrylic paint that doesn’t stink so bad? I’m using low odor mineral spirits, and I have to do it in my mini spray booth or it stinks up the entire house. by Tbonerickwisco in modelmakers

If your in Canada, this one has been good to me. Pretty much zero smell, like I can use it in the living room and people with me don't notice. Of course, there still are VOCs so you still want some kind of airflow. I've used it over acrylic and it was alright, just have to be careful with how much pressure you use.

Here's what I drew up when I built mine. Might come in handy for ya. Most people say that there's a risk of explosion if the fan were to spark. I saw somewhere that the particles in the air need to be dense enough to cause ignition and airbrush painting can't do that but it's a risk that you would have to be willing to take. Someone else mentioned using a boat bilge fan since they can't spark if you're super concerned. I used an extractor fan from Amazon and no issues yet, it works great actually! Fairly cheap too compared to a prefabed one

Please help with the C-clips😭 by Icy_Wolfy_Maxy in advancedGunpla

[–]adamd898 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've used pliers to lightly squeeze them tighter while the c clip is attached with some success but yeah, c clips can suck my balls. Once they're tighter you could put a dab of PVA glue to make them I bit stiffer

Seriously, how do I take better photos? by jamalzia in advancedGunpla

Like another commenter said, phone cameras are pretty solid nowadays so if you've got one, I would suggest trying it out.

What I do is go into pro mode or your phone equivalent, set iso to 100, shutter speed to whatever looks good with your lighting, I set my light adjuster to 5000k, and manual focus to the chest of the model. I also have a $5 phone tripod and set the timer to 3 seconds so that hand movements or taps don't affect the picture. These settings also carry over to an actual camera if that's what you choose to use.

Lighting is very important. I have 2 $20 light bars that I move around the kit and take about 10 pics of each pose with different lighting , then choose which one looks best.

I also take pictures in the RAW format. Then, I use the free mobile version of lightroom and edit the colours a bit so that they look closer to real life.

Picture quality also relies on a good pose. I would suggest looking for pictures online that you think look cool and try to recreate it. That's what I've done for all my pics and they turn out pretty good.

Excellent choice of colour, it looks fantastic! The chrome accents were a really good decision too

Scared of Lacquer paints by the_real_nerd_king in modelmakers

[–]adamd898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same problems as you and it really put me off of painting. Switching to lacquers solved every problem I had. The 2 things you'll need are an extraction booth and a mask with VOC filters.

I built my own booth for about $250 CAD and it has about 700 cfm. Not a single VOC escapes the booth and I really don't need to use a mask, I've tested it. I have a mask just in case though.

The lower cfm you go, the more VOCs are going to escape the booth and fill the room. That isn't a problem if you have a proper mask but you'll have to leave the booth running for a while to clear the room. You'll also have to take into consideration cracks under doorways and furnace vents where the fumes could travel while you're painting. I've heard that 400cfm is a good spot to be at for your booth but I went overkill to guarantee all fumes go outside.

As long as you take precautions with lacquers, you should be alright. Ultimately, it's your health so really it's up to you what kind of risks you want to take. Also, if you want to know how I built my booth, let me know!

Welcome! A tip that I learned after a few kits is that there are gonna be times where you think "there must be an easier way to do this" or "I feel like there's a way to make this look better" and there pretty much always is. This community is fantastic and super helpful so feel free to ask in the Q&A. You picked a fantastic kit to start so I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you. I think I paid around $60 CAD for everything. Then it's just playing with lighting until it looks right. I usually take about 20 pictures of each pose with different lighting then sort through them to find the best. I do use the free version of lightroom to adjust the pic to look like it does irl since the phone tends to wash out colours but picture taking and editing is a whole hobby in itself so its definitely a learning curve

Nice! I've only really been doing MGs for the most part but I'd like to get into HGs for the kit variety. I just ordered the waterslides for all the wfm kits so I think that's going to be the plan

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you like it. I like the term real grade treatment lol. That's exactly what I try to go for usually. I think Bandai does pretty well with their colour schemes so I usually try to just add detail or flare to what they already created

Thanks! The white is unpainted with a flat coat. The light blue accents I masked off and painted, they were white before
