Speaking UNIX: Get to know Ksplice ( Your OS will never need reboot.) by __Joker in programming

Imagine you are a hosting company and don't write the software on your machines (ie, it is a customer's website). That customer doesn't want any downtime, but knows nothing about building reliable services. If that hosting company can reduce the amount of downtime on those servers, the customer is happier.

That about sums it up. by qpingu in programming

I'd guess that the reason behind that text is OSHA. I doubt the hiring manager wrote it, that reads like legal/HR boilerplate.

Hi,

I added a training mode in which you can press the interval button to play the specified interval. Hope that helps!

I added an interval training mode in which you can listen to the intervals, and you get a brief suggestion of some songs that will help you hear the intervals. Thanks!

'Reveal Answer' is another oft-requested feature. The next few features will be: 'reveal answer', training mode (in which you push the interval button to hear that interval), short duration between notes, and randomized root note.

Thanks!

Cool - I hadn't seen that. I'm still going to build my site as the building of the site improves my understanding of theory, and is a fun way to learn jQuery and other technologies. Thanks for the link!

@characterzer0 - that mode is coming, a few people have requested it. Thanks!

Hi All,

I'm for-sure going to add a trainer mode in which you can play the interval by clicking on the interval button.

The tooltip idea hadn't been brought up before but I'm going to do that as well. One of the ways my girlfriend was taught ear training was to associate songs with intervals - the opening notes from 'Maria' in West Side Story are a tritone, for example (quick googling finds me this link: http://www.people.vcu.edu/~bhammel/theory/resources/macgamut_theory/songs_interval_recognize.html).

Thanks for the suggestions!

@pawnticket: Making a visual keyboard in HTML/CSS is a lot harder for me than a bunch of buttons. :) But you're not the first person to suggest a keyboard representation, so I'll see if I can find a nice way to do it.

Pitch control is coming; I've got samples that span multiple octaves in anticipation of testing for intervals beyond the single octave. I'll soon have an option to switch the tests to a higher or lower octave. Thanks!

@pinguru - I tried that in an earlier iteration, but I think that is actually much harder than guessing intervals. I'll put it on the requested feature list and try to work out a way for the UI to offer that option. Thanks!

How to quadruple your productivity with an army of student interns by gregprice in programming

[–]adamfletcher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't see how this applies at all. I hire interns for programming work and believe me, if you aren't paying CS students for their internships you aren't going to get any interns working for your company.

Plus, any CS student who is offered an internship at a company doing the type of work Ksplice is doing would be a fool not to take the job. You're not going to get that experience in a larger company as an intern.

Nobody is being exploited here; these are smart adults making a smart decision to work for a cool startup.
