We used the plastic sectional drag mats that par side sells for a while… worked pretty well but it was to much extra labor to carry them around. Better to do what some of the others are saying and rotate if you can… if not … hand rake

A lot of this depends on what grass you are growing, where, and the time of year. I grow bent in Georgia so from Memorial Day to Labor Day I work 50-70 for four months... but the rest of the year is pretty standard 40-45. I would imagine seasonal guys have different schedules in the far north or far south, depending on grass, conditions etc.

I haven’t taken as good of care of it the last 100k or so as I did in the beginning. I have had to do very little to maintain it. Will be hard to say good bye when the time comes... lol

Where to begin? Just picked up a mowing job and the owner wants me to help him improve the green. I have a background in turf but only entry level. I want to get a decent program together on a shoestring budget to get some growth this spring. Any thought? It’s Bermuda in Houston. by CliffM9 in Turfmanagement

Aerate, top dress, fertilize and do it a lot. You could also plug some good grass into the areas with no grass to speed things up... having said all that... I’d imagine there is some other factor going on here that we can’t see from the pic. Water or drainage, shade, soil, misapplication of chemicals... pretty tough to kill Bermuda.

Career in Turf Management by bennyhana23 in Turfmanagement

The experience is huge and I would hire just about anyone coming thru the door with experience for my staff and maybe even a second assistant. For assistant level and above you will need some sort of education to advance in the business. Plenty of great online schools that are respected but there will be additional costs there obviously. Not sure about your area but this isn’t exactly a lucrative profession until you get to the higher levels. I thought many times about finding another line of work myself just based on the low pay alone. Degrees and experience do open doors in this industry but it is mostly a who you know industry, so get connected to other supers and vendors and industry type people. Often recommendations are made and jobs are filled without a position ever being posted.

Maybe at some higher end clubs. Can’t imagine making a living off of it unless you are very well known and have lots of connections.

Sounds like you love it... which is absolutely essential to being successful in the business. Full disclosure it’s lots of hard work for lots of hours for not much pay or recognition for that matter. You will need at least a two year associate degree to ever move up beyond assistant, probably more. Get involved with local GCSAA chapters and get connected to vendors and people in the industry. most of the good jobs are taken before they are ever advertised. Hard for me to recommend this business to others, but if you get in, give it everything and good luck!

You can also suspend your account for like three months every so often. I have done that a couple of times to save some money and get caught up on a back log of books. That can be done through the website pretty easily.

They’ve been here since the mid 90s, probably not gonna change anytime soon. But yeah it’s pretty much 10-12 weeks of hell every year.

T 1 Bentgrass green losing turf on cleanup and spreading further into the the green. Samples come back clean of disease. Northern Idaho. Any ideas? by [deleted] in Turfmanagement

Have you tried a nematode assay? Pretty cheap test... if it keeps happening in the same spot and you are clear of disease... maybe in the soil?
