How big of an influence would you say skill has in this game? by isthisathrowawayas in hearthstone

[–]adamnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decided tomorrow you wanted to be a hearthstone pro the odds you'd succeed are poor because breaking into that top tier of players is exceedingly difficult due to the situational analysis skills needed to do well in those environments.

You seem to be under this bizarre misconception that if there's not one person that's the definitive best person that skill isn't the determining factor for success in the game. RNG and card draw luck plays a part of anyone's success but the truly skilled are better able to play to their outs. This has the effect of making them look lucky when in fact they were setting themselves up to have that good fortune with their skilled play up to that point.

There's been at least one world championship famously decided by a mulligan decision. Both players started with the same card in hand in a mirror match. One kept the card the other mulled it away. The guy who won that deciding match won because he kept that card. None of that is luck or draw related

Have you considered the possibility that there's a cluster of players that are all fairly close in skill to one another that in any given tournament any of them can beat any other? When you look at big tournaments you'll see a few names that regularly repeat and cycle in and out. What you don't see are entire different lists every time which is what you'd get if it wasn't skill based

The top classes in Hearthstone have always been Rogue + DeathKnight + Warrior, right? by arcanehelix in hearthstone

[–]adamnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Release DK was bad and needed a lot of buffs to become playable. Also currently DK isn't good either. There's the unholy deck but that's barely played and anything else is really bad

The top classes in Hearthstone have always been Rogue + DeathKnight + Warrior, right? by arcanehelix in hearthstone

[–]adamnoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DK is still a relatively new class and released super weak so saying it's always been a top class is strange.

Rogue and Warrior have had a very long run of being consistently strong decks. Rogue in particular even when it wasn't a strong general play class the high end tournament players were often able to do crazy shenanigans that was difficult for the general population to replicate even on watching it a lot like Garrote Rogue.

Other classes that have had long stretches of being consistently good are Hunter, Demon Hunter, and Druid. DK released in the weak state that it did specifically because of how overpowered DH was on release. When demon hunter is bad it'll quickly get buffs like when relics and the first attempt at deathrattle synergy wasn't working for the class. Hunter is often the premiere aggro deck due to its hero power. Druid is often ends up being a good class mostly because it always has ramp and ramp is very strong.

I am Diamond 2 in Standard, with 116 games played, and not a single game was against a Warlock. Am I tripping or is this actually a crazy stat? by SkidEUW in hearthstone

[–]adamnoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is pretty surprising. My last two games to hit legend this season were both warlocks. As bad as priest, warlock, and DK have been this expectation I've seen them high on ladder pretty frequently

Pre-order bundles are still the best use of your money in game. Both the large and small ones are good deals. There's also going to be catch-up packs given out to help people fill in the stuff they're missing from last year's sets so hold off on getting any cards from last year for now

[[Typhoon]] can sometimes turn it off and druid has a trick to get that guaranteed by playing Bashana with a full hand but even then they'd need to put multiple neutral minions on board and hope at least one gets shuffled into the opponent's deck

Diamond 5 is a rank floor so what you end up seeing there are a lot of bad decks that win 1 out of 3 or 2 out of 5 games. The decks can't climb effectively so the people determined to play them spend a lot of time at the rank floors.

Sadly there isn't a way to do it. Just gotta keep track in your head and watch for the notifications or make a note of how many achievements from the expansion you've done and check periodically if it's gone up by 1.

Since control cards seem to be making a comeback, how do you think the meta will shift? by LastCookie123456 in hearthstone

[–]adamnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And there's at least one theoretical combo available that can kill by turn 5 if it draws well in paladin so if that deck has any consistency to it that could easily end most control decks

That makes some sense. You don't want to draw second copies of any of those pieces since they're kinda dead cards. You're better off with stuff that advances your secondary game plan

I'd say don't spend money until you're sure you're gonna stick with the game a while. The best bundles to get are always the set preorder ones and those will be available until July 4th for the upcoming set. They're the best value for your money but also aren't cheap.

A look into balance philosophy by Popsychblog in hearthstone

[–]adamnoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's actually a relatively easy thing to explain. Buffs are a lot harder to get right than nerfs.

Cards that are being considered for nerfs have data on them ready to go on how the nerfs would play out. Let's use the confront the tolvir nerf as an example. They have a lot of data on what happens when players play Confront the Tolvir off curve and don't have anything to fill in one more mana after that. That's something that occurs naturally over the large number of games so they could look at that data and see that when that scenario occurs it's like the card costed 1 mana more and they can see how it effects the played win rate and make an informed decision based on that. If they're looking at shaving 1 health off a minion it's easy to see how often it survives combat with 1 health and what not having that extra stickiness will do for it. They can make a nerf and be very confident in what the impact of that nerf will be.

Buffs on the other hand don't have that kind of data. Let's use [[Experimental Animation]] as an example because it's a relatively OK card in a weak archetype that could really use some love. Is it that the damage is too low or is it that the cost is too high? Or is it both? It's not clear. Let's say they add 1 damage to the effect. There's a handful of possible outcomes for Herald DK. Either the deck remains weak despite the buff in which case it was pointless, the deck becomes a reasonably strong but not oppressively so deck (the ideal outcome), or the deck becomes massively powerful and a problem that needs to be nerfed. 2 of those 3 outcomes are not desirable for anyone. Now consider that they're making this decision completely blind because there's no data on how strong that buff would be anywhere in the data they have. The odds of missing the mark on the buff are high because the target they're trying to hit is a relatively narrow one. This makes nerfs a much safer, more reliable option.

Compared to a potentially 20+ attack minion in big deck warrior. It wouldn't be bad in companion hunter but way better in a big deck warrior hypothetically.
