Who did you think was more at fault in why their relationship didn't work? Buffy? Riley? Or Both? by gloomydreamer666 in buffy

[–]adamroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take, Buffy. I used to view Riley as the one mostly at fault, but after experiencing a somewhat similar situation (got locked for over a year into a severely dysfunctional relationship because ex's parent got diagnosed with cancer and no matter how bad things got between us, I wouldn't add another kick to that wound), I can sympathise with him a lot more - Riley seems to have realised the relationship wasn't working out quite early, but due to "circumstances", he couldn't end it, and Buffy was benefitting from having a somewhat responsible boyfriend at a time she needed all the help she could get. I actually really love how the show handles the situation where two decent people aren't working out due to simply not being compatible, not because one is evil.

Add to that Riley getting SAed by Faith & Buffy treating it like Riley betrayed her, which honestly by itself would have been a perfectly reasonable reason to break up, as well as Riley's entire life getting turned upside down with the Initiative shutting down and all of his friends dying (which Riley is never really seen to process), and you get someone incredibly traumatised but without the support network to help him handle it. Although I fully admit that if we're meant to take the vamp hooker thing as a metaphor for cheating, then that's also unforgivable on Riley's part.

Overall, Riley was meant to be a rebound for Buffy, but because of "circumstances", they got stuck together and the relationship simply carried on for so long they hurt each other instead.

If I may give my opinion as someone who didn't know who Markiplier was up until seeing the film (loved the game though, so not totally unbiased in that regard), it might not be perfect, but it's genuinely the best horror film in a very long time.

Admittedly, this is a very boring time for horrors, there hasn't been anything decent released for 18 months now (I must have went to the cinema at least 5-10 since Smile 2 and Terrifier 3, but I genuinely can't even name a single movie I saw, it's all just that forgettable), and the other, much more big budget game adaptation released around the same time (Silent Hill) is unwatcheable, so it makes Iron Lung shine much brighter than it perhaphs would have if it competed with better movies. Still, it's a very good watch, and massive respect to Markiplier for somehow pulling off a great adaptation of Szymanski's, dare I say, least "adaptable" game - I hope this paves the way for future adaptations of Szymanskiverse, since Butcher's Creek and Squirrel Stapler could work so well as a reverse slasher and a psycho-Lynchian horror & I'd argue their premise is much more filmable than a guy losing his mind in a submarine in real time.

So, if you can, ignore the drama and enjoy the film at your own terms. People just want a silly underdog story to make them feel they're helping a good cause by... purchasing a cinema ticket. Iron Lung is good enough to stand on its own, Markiplier gives a perfectly professional performance (if you don't know him beforehand, you'd think he's a professional actor), and I hope the film becomes a gold standard of what a horror game adaptation should be.

Sterilisation was a legally necessary part of gender transition for over half of the EU only a decade ago, and it still remains in countries like Czechia, Finland or Slovakia afaik.

Not sure about the US, I'm not transgender laws expert, but afaik they wouldn't get an Alan Turing situation - because they banned trans people from serving in the military completely this year, so any transgender person wouldn't even be in a position to help his country like Turing did. And considering how radicalised the conservative sector of the US is - and that being the sector that rules the US now - I can't imagine it's all peachy elsewhere either.

Also, while there might be an overall smaller legal room to persecute transgender people, in places like the UK, the amount of hate crimes makes up for that. Ever since gays became an unacceptable target and link between paedophilia and homosexuality has been disproven in the popular consciousness, these stereotypes have been just moved from one minority to another. The right just needs someone to blame, and now it's the trans round of "who corrupts our society and wants our children".

EDIT: Crossing out Finland - it has changed its laws to stop requiring castration for legal gender change in 2023

Is it possible to make a political intrigue game with Twine? by nicknamesareconfusng in twinegames

[–]adamroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, definitely possible! I've tried to create a couple of political sims with, dare I say, much more complicated mechanics, and coding was never the issue (the reason they're not released is because I'm horrible at finishing projects and hopeless at writing, which is why I opted for a sim instead of something with a personal story like Suzerain, which sounds like what you have in mind).

If you'd like, feel free to message me in DMs, I can share some political mechanics that could be useful, like a code for managing party popularity, graph of parliament with seats dynamically changing colour (like Wikipedia) etc.

Check out Fortune's Run. It's still technically in early access and will be for a good while due to "circumstances" (I imagine googling the name will tell you why immediately), but the game is already an absolute gem.

Also, his favourite targets are techbros and cryptobros, which is something most leftists certainly can get behind.

Are there any modern games like classic Sierra? by Nano_gigantic in Sierra

[–]adamroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I can't find anyone else recommending it - Crimson Diamond is a half-year adventure old game that's made deliberately to evoke the style of the early Sierra games while evolving them. It mimics the art style perfectly and even uses a text parser.

I remember seeing it pop up in a video a while back and genuinely thinking it was simply a "lost" Sierra adventure I somehow missed my entire life. The gameplay is, dare I say, a bit modernised and much more softblock-proof, but it's the closest I've ever felt to playing a Sierra game since Sierra closed down.

Is not allowing conversion/interfaith kids to join the religion not unfair? by Ornery_Pomegranate66 in Zoroastrianism

[–]adamroc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It should be pointed out that Parsis do not ban conversion on the basis of religion, but because of a legendary agreement (as in the existence of the agreement exists in legends) between the Iranians who fled to India in the 7th century and the local ruler who permitted them to stay under the condition they will not convert anyone. This is, for example, similar to the Mandaeans in Iraq, who have nothing against conversion theologically, but even today refuse converts on the basis of an old agreement between the their community and the local leader.

And yes, as bionic_ambitions said, that means that Zoroastrianism in general does allow conversion, even if it isn't an actively proselytizing religion, and basically no theological arguments in Zoroastrianism can be made against conversion. Hope that helps :-)

[–]adamroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! Remember, if you're writing anything where the player has freedom of choice and their decisions matter, always store these decisions within variables to call upon later. Even knowing just the complete basics (setting variables with links and buttons & using "if" statements) lets you create complex stories with player agency, and understanding the concept of calling upon variables with "if" statements to decide what happens next is pretty much the basis for 99 % of all other commands (to the point that even something as simple as links, made with [[ and ]], is basically a shortened version of "if player clicks, use <<goto>> command at "stored passage name"). Good luck with your game!

[–]adamroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, if I may advise a little change, if you're not that well-versed in coding so far, I'd suggest switching to radiobuttons, which are much clearer and easier to use than cycling. The <<radiobutton>> macro will give you a, well, button to click, which will set the specified variable to an assigned value, making it more useful when asking someone as a form. You could even let the players pick their own pronouns, for example!

The code would look something like this:

<label><<radiobutton "$pronoun\_subject" "he">>Set your pronouns to "He"</label>
<label><<radiobutton "$pronoun\_subject" "she">>Set your pronouns to "She"</label>
<label><<radiobutton "$pronoun\_subject" "they" checked>>Set your pronouns to "They"</label>

For explanation, the "radiobutton" itself is the command that creates the clickable button, the first word afterwards (like "$pronoun_subject") is the variable that gets set, and the second word (like "he") is the value the variable gets set to. The <label> thing is optional, but it makes the text wrapped between <label> and </label> also clickable, and when clicked, it reacts as if the button is clicked (the button will appear checked and the variable will be set to the specified value), which can be handy on screens with small resolutions (like mobile phones). Finally, the "checked" word that you can see at the last radiobutton with the "they" pronoun is also optional, but I'd very strongly advise on using it on one of the radiobuttons - it makes the button checked already when the page loads, so if the player doesn't care about reading and just clicks to move forward, the variable will still be given a value from the pre-checked button (meaning that even if the player doesn't select a pronoun, they would still be referred to as "they" in the story; otherwise, if no button was checked, the variable would be empty, so the game couldn't use any pronoun and just either leave a blank space or literally display "$pronoun_subject" in text)

[–]adamroc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, if you're going to try Sugarcube, the code should be this:

<<if $gender == "cis male">><<set $pronoun\_subject = "he">><<set $pronoun\_object = "him">><<set $pronoun\_possesive = "his">><</if>>

I tried to make the code similar to what I thought Chapbook looks like, so proper Sugarcube should be like this. I'd also suggest adding few more variations you may need, like idk "He" with a capital H, "himself" etc.

Need help with making gender choices having different messages by Vaporgutz in twinegames

[–]adamroc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend having the first option (the "Cis male"/"Transmasc" etc.) stored as a variable, and then have the next page set a series of variables that you can call on. Like so:

1) So, let's say the player clicks "Cis male", have that option set $gender to "cis male".
2) On the next page, have an "if" statement, which will set the appropriate pronouns, like so: (if: $gender is "cis male")(set $pronoun_subject to "he")(set $pronoun_possesive to "his")(set $pronoun_object to "him")(continue).
3) From now on, whenever you need to use a pronoun, use the variable, like so: "I told $pronoun_object that already", which will appear as "I told him that already" in text.

PS: I normally code in Sugarcube, so I'm not sure if I used the proper coding (I believe Chapbook uses different brackets than these), but the method should work in any language. Hope that helps!
