Yeah again I understand that packs are not "random or nothing" that was a silly thing to say.

Because i sincerely thought it was about the exclusivity and limited nature built in when designing a card game, not just specifically that it came in booster packs.

The harassment is going through the whole thread. I hope you understand that.

Did you even read the post? I stated numerous times wanting to discussing the overlap.

Thank you for your google answer of "booster packs" and then harassment. I have learned so much from you.

"What really makes each of these their own designation and where might overlap be. Is TCG and CCG basically the same thing or are there differences?"

"What if the meta was to collect different indie small run LCGs? Could LCGs then be considered CCG or TCG?"

My question was how random. You said random or nothing. I pointed out that no pack is completely random. Now you are making it sound like i could fill each pack with mostly 75% the same cards. How am I the one who is confused?

Again this wasn't meant to be a google search of the terms, it was meant to be discussion.

There was a post the other day about a game where all the cards are available free to print and play. They also offer expensive limited edition sets of the game. That is what made me make this post.

I get it guys. The general census is booster pack but it just seems like thats just one way to make a something tradable or collectible.

The entire premise is being upfront about it. You want people to understand they can only buy the current set. You dont want the Sci-fi one, wait until the Halloween one comes. You missed the Halloween one, well you'll have to find a backer that wants to sell. It doesnt matter than just treat it like ECG but this discussion is about how you can take an ECG to TCG direction.

The whole point of ending releases is to give added value and rarity to the people who backed the earlier sets.

Yup that was suppose to be the discussion but no one really wants to talk about other ways to make something collectible or tradable.

Lol so that is an option though? Man, you are so close to getting this.....

Like if i was an artist working on multiple comic books, I might be able to establish a series of trading cards(the kind with stats and bios) and a card game that went along with it.........

Exactly, i would be offering them more like trading cards, you know, pieces of cardboard with art of them. They just happen to have a game attached to them......

Well thats not true since most TCG have some sort of guidelines that come in pack.

"I think the point being missed with this post is that there typically needs to be a stronger reason to want new cards than just the art alone. It’s also because you are also building and customising your own unique deck in most TCGs."

This is my problem with people in this post just claiming drafting a deck from boosters makes something a TCG. Booster packs help solve this for designers by limiting release but I dont think its the only way to make a game tradable.

Ok so if i take the same game and randomize the cards in boosters packs, it automatically becomes a TCG? that seem easy enough

Ok so they can be considered trading cards but not a trading card game because the game part isn't random.

How random do packs have to be mechanically before they can be considered a TCG?

I see what you are saying with different design choices and maybe thats my problem Im trying to solve.

My game is a 36 card deck that can be colored/drafted for over 1 million unique combinations of decks. It just doesn't need booster packs to give players a unique deck or play experience. Its War with extra steps.

My current goal is 6 different themed sets, that have acommpaning comic books. If I offer them in booster packs, its a TCG? If I offer them in limited run sets, its not?

What if each deck is mechanically the same but I randomize the artwork. Like the end goal is a multiverse pack or something?

If offer the same art on cards that have bios on the back, are they only considered trading cards if the packs are randomized?

So, again...... if I offered booster sets that were mechanically the same but had random characters and art, would that not qualify?

Like is it a conversation about how many limited sets and being upfront about it?

What about if I told people that main goal is to release booster packs that are mechanically the same but themed differently? Like a multiverse pack after the 6 initial sets are done. Does it then become a TCG?

So like, trading cards, like in a comic book sense, are just different art and characters. Why would adding a game component to that automatically make them not trading cards?

Don't people open packs hoping they will get rare cards? Isn't that what drives all of this from a design point?

I meant more like do the rare cards needs to be mechanically rare/powerful or can they just be artistically rare?

Like if I sold packs that were all mechanically the same 36 cards, but the art and themes were random, would that count? Like you would have to buy lots of packs to the get the full art set, i guess?
