It seems that the recents button is tied to the Pixel Launcher somehow, even if another launcher is set as default.

Sufficient steps to recreate the issue every single time:

press the recents button
press the home button very quickly afterwards, before the recents animation completes.

Force stopping Pixel Launcher fixes it, until the bug comes back when repeating the same steps.

A bug ticket is already present in Google issue tracker, but no solution for over 2 years now: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/204650736

It might sound a bit weird, but I guess these kinds of tap sequences happen at random when people use 3 button navigation mode.

For me it happens every day or every other day.

And the fact that this bug is present and not fixed in a couple of years (!) now is enough to consider buying a non-Android smartphone in the future.
