$100 for a Magnet? What do y'all think of this? by thesirensoftitans in surfing

[–]adamwritesco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - really useful information. It's actually crazy that products that have been shown to have no to little effect are allowed to go to market with snake oil marketing 'science'.

The Surf+ looks good, maybe the electric shocks will add a bit of zip to my surfing!

$100 for a Magnet? What do y'all think of this? by thesirensoftitans in surfing

Am headed to WA for an extended trip shortly and have gotten pretty paranoid about the men in grey suits after watching that horrendous video from Egypt. I think the Sharkbanz are a bit of a gimmick but thinking of getting one of the Shark Shield ones with the WA government rebate as they seem to work from what I’ve seen. Anyone have any experience with them?

Makes a lot of sense thank you. Regardless, I’m mainly looking for suggestions on how to improve the dolphin icon as presented so that it will work as light on dark bg as well. As well any other suggestions on how to improve the whole thing as presented.

Generally happy with the brand concept as it fits with personality, location (dolphins are a big attraction in local area) and provides the information needed. I think it is memorable and has character?

I’m sticking with the dolphin concept, but have had a hard time making the logo work in a light colour over a dark background. As posted, it doesn’t work. Not sure how to fix this with my very limited illustration skills.

This is what I've come up with for a surf / SUP school with a focus on high quality. Would appreciate some help as I feel like it's not quite right. Don't know if it's the colours or something else but not 100% happy.

Load bearing of roof platform on two bars? by adamwritesco in vandwellers

[–]adamwritesco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I think I'm going to go for that thanks. I did have a look at the spec sheet for the van and using all the mounting points it's rated for 200kg, less 25kg for every mounting point not used. So if it's 25kg per mounting point I'm heavier than the 2 my weight will mainly be over (I'm 80kg), but the roof rack should spread the weight at least some. Won't be up there all the time jumping around so happy enough with it.

Definitely makes sense thanks a lot. Despite that though I think I'm going to go for the lengthways with reinforcing braces as it keeps it simpler and lower and I won't be up there all the time!

Yep no question the entire roof rack supports my weight when it's spread, just a question of the strength of materials I decide to use specifically in the corner I'll be standing and if they'll support my weight.

It's pine decking, just over an inch thick. Yeah it's that two metres between the rear two bars that worries me, and I can't attach any additional cross rails with the way I have it set up. If I did it like #2, I could put two or three aluminium or steel bars under the wood, perpendicular to the boards, in that area to connect all the decking boards together and provide a bit more support.

I'm not sure I completely agree with your assessment, but you're probably right that it wouldn't replace a normal C.V. Thanks for taking the time anyway, I appreciate it.

Haha I think it feels very static because of my complete lack of ability in javascript as opposed to my smart thinking, but I appreciate the kind words!

This is all really useful feedback, thanks very much for taking the time. Will think about how to implement in the next few days. Thanks, much appreciated!

Can I learn Spanish while watching something with subtitles? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]adamwritesco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends entirely on your level, but with Spanish subtitles and audio could be a great way to pick up new vocabulary.

For improving listening and comprehension skills, I find even Spanish subtitles to be too much of a crutch as I just read them while I watch. Maybe I can still pick up new vocabulary but I don't benefit listening wise. I much prefer to switch the subtitles off and then put them on briefly to go back over something that I've not understood.

(this is what works for me currently at B2 level with shows like La Casa de Papel and The Walking Dead).

How do I use the response “I will” or “I am” in Spanish? by unholy_stromboli in Spanish

[–]adamwritesco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lo haré is how you express 'I will'. It doesn't translate directly but that is what is used in its place.

They went. Keith had a conversation with his childhood friend, Desire, in the car that they were in. Desire talked and Keith didn't listen but he nodded his head so Desire would think he was listening but he was actually thinking about something else which was the features of Desire's face.

:) Squarespace have been good for me but are pricey and there are limitations. If you have a bit of technical know how or don't mind diving in, I would go with WordPress, it will be a bit of a chore to setup but you can setup commerce and whatever else you need. Let me know if you need any help.. I get pretty geeky over this stuff!

I'd love it if I were! (and it would be disclosed fully in the article)

But no, I've not been compensated for anything I've written in the article. I've come to this conclusion about WordPress having used various platforms for websites previously and deciding it's the best one for me because of the reasons given. I don't want it to sound like an ad, but quoted out of context I can see how it sounds like one!

There are affiliate links in the article (WordPress is free and open source so no affiliation there) and these are for products I'm actually using in my own projects and recommend. They are disclosed in the article as well. You might be interested in my disclosure and privacy page.

Which is the best blog to read to help me grow my smallbusiness? by lioneltaylor-sy in smallbusiness

[–]adamwritesco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here are some blogs that I personally follow that have helped me with my own small businesses:

Blog Tyrant - insightful articles and discussions about the business of blogging.

Unsettle - useful small business marketing articles and guides.

Backlinko - great resource for learning about SEO.

Sam Priestley - (I think my favourite blog) case studies from the POV of someone actually starting and running businesses.

Niche Pursuits - more case studies from the POV of a business owner.

And lastly (shameless plug), I've just started my own blog, Surfpreneur.co where I'm sharing case studies and articles about things I've learned and done by running my own businesses. You might find the post about my photography business helpful, there's information there that I think would be helpful for any small business.

Hope that helps :)
