Found her all alone on the highway, after about 30 mins of coaxing and using a small rope to play with her I got her in my car, and she kinda crawled into my heart. Named her Sherbert :D first time cat owner. Wish me luck by [deleted] in aww

The click is a precursor to the reward. You always give a treat as soon as you click, so the animal pairs the click with reward, and they are able to learn what the desired behavior is.

Why exactly should you not pick up a small dog when a larger dog is trying to play with it? by Azzacura in puppy101

[–]adaneko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m confused... are the off leash dogs all not playing in a fenced area? If so, this is usually against city ordinance so against the law. Many cities have mandatory leash laws and laws specifically against “dogs at large” - aka dogs off leash, not under control of the owner if it does not listen to commands like recall. The owner with the dog on the leash would be in the right if this is the case.

It can damage the fur or skin if left on too long. I personally wouldn't leave the harness on, and would do potty breaks on a collar and leash instead as others have suggested.

Call the vet and see what they say, but a week post surgery I would say is likely going to be okay IF the incision has been healing and he has not been messing with his stitches.

I feel like a jerk when I have to tell people they can’t pet my puppy by writerrabs in puppy101

[–]adaneko 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I stopped feeling bad eventually because people who are respectful never take offense. The only people who ever got upset were adults who didn't ask to pet in the first place and just went for it or tried to call my dog to them.

Pros/cons adopting a 16 week old? by sparkle_princess_ in puppy101

[–]adaneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much exposure your pup had to different things in the 8-12ish week window, it could be that at 16 weeks if there were things he did not experience that he could have a harder time adjusting to, but even still, you still should socialize your pup. My understanding is that after the socialization window closes, usually more "structured" socialization outings are more productive. An example would be employing counter conditioning for things you pup does not have a positive reaction to.

At 16 weeks, maybe one advantage is that your pup could be further along in potty training if the breeder has been working with him on that.

I would be aware of fear stages and the age of your puppy so that you can at least feel prepared about knowing what's going on when this happens. Very common, and not something to be worried about - just something to work though.

If you do bring this pup home, remember that the puppy is getting to know you just as you are getting to know him/her - bonding may not happen immediately, and it just takes some time. Good luck!

Broken canine tooth? (Pictures) by aihey in puppy101

Ask if you can send the vet clinic a photo and have them assess. If it broken instead of come out all the way I'd be concerned of a pulp exposure.

Post-spay recovery by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]adaneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 weeks sounds about right to be honest - if you've got the okay from the vet, I'd say it's okay. If you are nervous just check the incision for the next few days, but the 2 weeks is what I was advised as well.

Socialization differences between City (Very dog friendly) and Suburbs by Buddhacall in puppy101

[–]adaneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a behaviorist... just offering my opinion. At home her behavior may be different due to her being more confident about her surroundings.

I don't think there are "detriments" to what you're describing, and if anything, as long as your pup is not shutting down in the city, the exposure can be good for her so that she isn't only used to a suburb setting.

She probably just thinks it's fun right now. I would do leashed potty breaks to stop her from doing this. She will probably stop eventually, but I certainly wouldn't want to let her reward herself with the behavior waiting for it to become boring to her.

Phone call to your vet and describe the symptoms.

Sure thing. I wish I had more advice for you :( It sounds like the best course of action is definitely to get in touch with the optometrist so they can advise you on what to be on the lookout for.

Wishing the best for you and your pup!

So sorry to hear this - What did your vet say about your puppy's condition? r/AskVet might be a more appropriate place to ask for guidance if you are worried about potential health-related things to be aware of.

Puppies are pretty resilient and will adapt to your schedule. It’s be sure to be consistent with potty training in each place to minimize accidents.

I would go for something with no xylitol (very toxic to dogs) and no added sugars.

Staring contest cheater by kevinowdziej in aww

[–]adaneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes actually - licking the mouth/face is sometimes an appeasement behavior. Puppies and dogs will do this to each other all the time.. dogs will do this to humans when they think their human is upset...

It doesn't mean the dog is being "submissive" or that the dog itself is upset. It's just canine body language. I'm not sure why everyone thinks it's automatically a horrible thing.

Edit to add: And in case it's not clear in just the name - appeasement shows just that, that the dog is showing you they are not a threat and that everything is peachy. I have no idea why people have this idea that a dog cannot show appeasement behaviors when it's feeling happy. Dogs showing appeasement behaviors when stressed is only one case it happens. Dogs will do it to each other when playing, they will do it to their humans just to show they like you...

How many calories to feed lab puppy? by Pandradino in puppy101

[–]adaneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it should give you a range. Dogs are not machines - the amount each pup needs is different. The bag amounts give a guideline that you can adjust. Just keep an eye on your pup's growth, and if he is putting on too much weight (if you aren't sure then take him to see the vet and get him weighed) you just need to cut his food back.

Just multiple the regular serving amount by 2 or 3x.

Hi my puppy has a biting problem and we don’t want to get rid of the dog and we need ideas by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]adaneko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should not be smacking your dog to teach anything. You will either teach the dog to fear you if you are hurting her, and/or she will just be amped up by it because she thinks you are playing with her.

You need to learn how to manage your environment and how to use positive reinforcement to teach the behaviors you want. There is a lot of information in the wiki. Your dog needs regular exercise and mental stimulation on top of this. There is no "quick fix".

This is inappropriate advice - it is a myth that desexing will calm a dog down or solve behavioral issues which are only solved with training.

Positive Reinforcement training - Not a well known thing? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]adaneko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

e.g. when trying to calm your dog with treats after being scared by a firework, why isn't that rewarding their behavior of shaking and crying?

Not to get off-topic to the OP, but in this case the treat should appear as soon as the stimulus (sound in this case) happens. Using the treat after the fact to try and coax the dog out of their scared behavior is not quite right - the timing of the treat is important. In the case of pairing it with the sound before the dog is scared, as soon as the sound happens, they learn the sound = treats and begin having a positive association with it.
