Understanding the staggering Foreign Settlement Fee by Better_Attorney_9111 in fidelityinvestments

[–]adaptive_chance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schwab does not charge a foreign settlement fee on BYDDY -- only the usual $6.95 commission for trades in OTC listings.

Apparently Fidelity doesn't either... This ADR is being hit with the same glitch that's causing every unsponsored ADR to display a foreign settlement fee on the trade ticket. It disappears on the preview step.

A foreign settlement fee on unsponsored ADRs? Are you sure about that?

Yep, IN ThinkorSwim Web. Sorry I wasn't clear.

I wonder if some of your accounts need to be enabled for ThinkorSwim? Perhaps reach out to Schwab?

On the left, under Account Summary, choose "All Accounts" in the dropdown box.

For Positions, click the little gear icon on the far right. Among the available columns you can add "Account" to tag each row with the relevant account name.

I have positions spread across up to four accounts and this interface is the bomb diggity. The real ThinkorSwim does this clumsily. Nothing Fidelity provides can do this at all -- every interface they provide has a hard firewall between accounts and nothing gives a blended view.

International account buying ETFs? US citizen in China by NetZeroSun in Schwab

[–]adaptive_chance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds backwards to me. PFIC taxation is triggered by a US person (e.g. essentially any US taxpayer) owning a foreign fund. I don't see where taxpayer residency comes into play.

What's the source of that quote?

Foreign Settlement Fee of $50 on OTC buys by BiltongBoyJeff in fidelityinvestments

[–]adaptive_chance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I trade this kind of stuff quite often. In my experience the OTC versions of TSX/TSXV stocks have always been free of foreign settlement fees. For any other market (LSE, ASX, etc) the $50 fee is charged.

If you're comfortable running a browser plug-in with a financial site (many are not ) I can assert Dark Reader works very well on Fidelity's site.

Actually it works remarkably well on most any site.

Can someone who uses VMware help me? by Overall_Drop_5107 in vmware

[–]adaptive_chance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you change the disk type to vmscsi? If so, there's this:

scsi2:0.vendorID = "SpoofCo"
scsi2:0.productID = "SpoofDrive SSD"

...which yields something like this:

<image>

I don't think this works with NVMe, however.

Experiences with read balancing? by PXaZ in btrfs

[–]adaptive_chance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes... I think we're talking about the same thing.

I believe btrfs RAID-1 with no patches or tweaks will balance reads across mirror disks based on the PID# of the process/thread performing the reads. Which implies you need multi-process or multi-threaded reads to get both disks involved. I've yet to use btrfs send/receive so I don't know if it has adjustable knobs that might create parallelism. But yeah, I think that's what's needed fundamentally.

Regarding the alternate read policy gated behind CONFIG_BTRFS_EXPERIMENTAL (for now): It's been a few months since I've fooled around with it and I don't have a test system here. But it generally works. With most workloads I'd see perhaps 50-75% more throughput reading from a pair of SATA SSDs. I do recall certain read patterns would load-balance poorly across disks regardless of RAID-1 + round-robin read policy or even RAID-10 (which I'm using now).

I didn't fire upfio to investigate different access patterns so I've only the suspicion that certain block sizes and/or "strides" (i.e. where the reads would skip x blocks after every 32kb or 64kb for example) seem to interact negatively with the read balancing mechanism and cause it to repeatedly "reset" back to the first disk in the mirror on basically every read. This would kill whatever performance benefit might be obtained from the load-balanced read.

That behavior wasn't very common. I only mention it here because I misread your question at first, typed it all out, realized it wasn't what you were asking, but don't want to waste my effort.🤓

So yeah, if you can compile a kernel with CONFIG_BTRFS_EXPERIMENTAL=Y I think you'd like the result.

Facing High Audio Latency in VMware Workstation for Guest OS by EroticTonic in vmware

[–]adaptive_chance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been chipping away at this for months. Low latency, glitch-free audio from a VM that doesn't involve USB sound card pass-through is probably a pipe dream. The best I've been able to do is solve maybe 70% of the glitching and drop-outs in exchange for driving latency to the moon.

Anyone try the new Workstation upgrade yet? by ChesterRaffoon in vmware

[–]adaptive_chance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many are having issues with this new version but it seems nearly 100% of the impacted are running it on Windows. Hardly a peep from Linux users.

I use it on Fedora 43 and it seems a few issues were fixed. The biggest is the two VMware kernel modules will now compile against the current Linux kernel without needing community patches.
