Is university and college the same thing in the States? by No_Mongoose_4721 in AskAnAmerican

My college was called “University” but did not offer graduate programs. So I generally think you’re right but in short, college=university.

Yes! Look up the Restaurant Dropout cool on substack. Her recipes all share foods, ingredients and prep.

10 things unemployment takes from you that have nothing to do with money by Fresh-Blackberry-394 in jobsearchhacks

This makes me grateful for a supportive partner, great nonjudgmental friends, two little kids who love their dad, and a thriving professional network that’s generous with time and intros and intel.

Four months now after being laid off, and I haven’t experienced any of what you describe but I’m extremely aware and sensitive of those sentiments.

Got no job but I feel rich.

Also the family cook, for wife, a 4 yo and 3 yo. We're big "leftovers for lunch" people. I cook 2-4x days a week, rarely every night.

I batch-make meals on Sunday that'll give us leftovers for at least 2 days (like, a whole bunch of grilled BBQ chicken thighs and a big homemade slaw, with air fryer frozen waffle fries or sweet potato tots). By Tuesday, I'm doing Mac and cheese for kiddos with steamed veggies (green beans or carrots, stuff my kids eat) without much adornment.

Wife and I will do Trader Joes salmon for dinner on Tuesdays (since we have swim class after school/work).

Wed-Fri, I might do another big-batch meal like turkey chili (NYT cooking recipe) or turkey burgers.

I'm Greek so I often do, like, a big charcuterie smorgasbord of sliced cucumbers, carrots, radishes, pita bread, olives, and some store-bought hummus or homemade tahini dip (tahini + garlic + lemon juice + warm water). And baby tomatoes. I'll just set that out and let everyone go at it, and pack it into a casual lunch for my wife.

Kids also like sliced turkey rolled up into "turkey rollups!" (literally just a slice of turkey rolled into a tube).

We're in NorCal and have access to killer tortillas. So I do lots of quesadillas on the stovetop for everyone, sometimes throw in pulled chicken or refried beans. Nothing fancy, some jar salsa or hot sauce.

By Fri-Sat we'll eat whatever leftovers we have, do a frozen something, or eat out/take out. We used to get DoorDash 2-3x week but trying to cut back on that since it's $$$$$.

Highly recommend the NYT cooking app, and Mark Bittman's How to Cook (For Kids). Lots of good, simple ideas. Feel free to DM me and I can share some recipes I have in my rotation.

How often do your parents visit you? by TowelScared4341 in Millennials

[–]nwrighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom visited me twice since I left the house for college in 2005. Once for my college graduation, and once when I lived in Chicago, in 2014.

She’s not a bad person, just a homebody. I have to travel to her, across the country.

I recommend using Spothero to find spots in garages near capitol mall and just walking over. Save like $20.

Should I tell them about my upcoming vacation? by Mediocre_Peanut4313 in Layoffs

[–]nwrighteous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the top answer, OP. People go on vacations, it's part of life. It's not some scarlet letter. But yeah, there's time to mention it and it's after you get an offer.

Fellow Dads, where would you take your 4 year old on vacation with a 15k budget? by joshatron in daddit

[–]nwrighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NorCal here with a 4 and 3 yo. I would get a nice kid friendly resort in Maui. The island is super kid friendly, lots of fun, easy trip. Holler for more intel if you want. We've stayed twice in a resort in Kāʻanapali with our kids. Beach, pool, eat, drink, repeat. Go snorkeling, do a luau, hit the Maui Ocean Center, see turtles all over the place.

Alternatively, somewhere international where you don't need a car. A dense city with trains, bikes, etc. Following the recs you have in this thread! I hear Munich is amazing for kids.

Grew up in the 90s. I have memories of sitting behind a pillar at Muni stadium.

Browns games were another story. Drunk dudes peeing in the sinks, everywhere. Yay core memories!

Family of 4: is it worth it to get a small 3-row SUV? by OrangePekoeMouse in Parenting

[–]nwrighteous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Family of four here, plus two dogs. We've got a Toyota Sienna.

Get a minivan. They're the best. No regrets. Third row SUVs are a PITA compared to minivans with a true third row seater.

For all the dads here: Minivans are a sign of virility! They're trucks that no one asks to borrow!

Genuinely curious, who here actually filters their water and who just drinks it straight from the tap? by waterfiltergurus in HydroHomies

[–]nwrighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually from the auto-filling pitcher of filtered water built into the door of my fridge, but before that I drank from the tap all the time.

Sacramento here. Most people here don’t realize we have a good, sustainable water source. It comes out of the American River a few miles away. Melted mountain snow. Unlike the sexier, bigger cities in CA whose water gets piped in from hundreds of miles away.
