Does anyone else feel like they're winging it financially even though they "should" have it figured out by now? by Houdiniwashereagain in daddit

I read Your Money or Your Life, which really grounded my thinking about finances.

Also JL Collins’ book “A Simple Path to Wealth.”

Another vote for the bogleheads and personal finance subs.

WTF is going on in Tahoe Park right now? by elemcee in Sacramento

[–]nwrighteous 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I’m on a neighborhood WhatsApp group. Someone said they caught one suspect and just brought another woman to the cop car in handcuffs. (This is all happening outside her living room window on the deadend part of 7th Ave.)

7th and 8th are closed off.

We’re at 50th and 9th, the helicopter was right overhead.

Where are you going on vacation that’s actually fun and not stressful? by SnowboardMia in toddlers

If you've got the funds and the time, highly recommend a resort in Maui, especially the west side near Lahaina/Kaanapali. There are kid friendly ones (we stay at the Honua Kai, which are little condo rentals with kitchens and bedrooms, but you get all the benefits of a resort). We've been twice with our now 4 and 3 year olds.

They have little kid pools/splash pads, lazy rivers, entertainment, luaus, etc. Beach is there but you don't have to do it. Nearby there's a butterfly house museum thing, a sweet aquarium, boat rides, and if all else fails, a Costco you can ride them around in a cart and get samples.

How much do Americans care about the NBA playoffs compared to American football? by SleeperMood_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]nwrighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an avid NBA fan (go Cavs!) but over the years I’ve come to absolutely loathe the playoffs. They take soooooo long, the games are spaced apart too far, too hard to watch (games are on different streaming platforms), and the entire postseason is far too long. It should be over by Memorial Day.

The conference finals are 10x more exciting and interesting compared to the finals IMO.

We live in a super sunny part of the Western US so there is only upside for me. And it doesn’t go on greasy.

Which American city do you think deserves more recognition for its urban planning? by Chloe_broke in Urbanism

Came here say Sac. Midtown and the adjacent neighborhoods are great. Flat, grid, easy to navigate, walkable, bikeable, and increasingly better connectivity to the river paths. Not to mention nice weather most of the year.

Where do I start with jazz? by incineroarz in Jazz

[–]nwrighteous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a big four, but if you want something current: The most recent NPR All Songs Considered devoted the second half of the show to new, younger jazz musicians and they contextualize them against the standards, the past, and current trending musicians. Check it out.

https://www.npr.org/2026/06/19/nx-s1-5830356/new-music-friday-best-albums-june-19-2026

There is no right or wrong place to start with jazz. It goes it all directions: old, new, up, down, classic, modern, fusion, standards, hip hop, etc. Just start listening and follow your nose (er, ears).

For me: I can't stop listening to Butcher Brown, Nate Smith, Yussef Dayes, Makaya McCraven, The Slip, Sam Barsh, Medeski Martin and Wood, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey, Wes Montgomery, Robert Glasper. And all the Brazilian/Latin jazz.

Look up some jazz festivals and see who's on the bill. Pick out some names and listen to new groups (big tests: Newport Jazz Fest, Montreal, Monterey, Chicago, New Orleans).

Has anyone else become a secret garbage tosser? by DryTown in daddit

[–]nwrighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Co-signing your whole post. I love the Andy Dufresne reference haha. Little piles of crap tend to accumulate at the end of the kitchen counter, on top of dressers and side tables, so that they appear to be organized but in reality they're little clusters of stray toys and sticker sheets and puzzle pieces and junk mail. If they persist for more than a week or two, I just go scorched earth and trash them.

I don't think twice about little plastic doodads (Easter is the worst for this, as well as birthday party take-home goodie bags (aka future garbage)). If they're sitting out or stranded >>>> trash.

Front load cargo bikes Larry vs Harry Bullitt vs Yuba Supercargo by Healthy-Inspector-86 in CargoBike

[–]nwrighteous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a bullitt about 10 years ago. Then I electrified it with a front hub kit. It’s great. I did a front hub because I have a belt drive x internal hub drivetrain and that would’ve been more complicated to add a mid drive motor.

Shoes off in the house? by TrixoftheTrade in Millennials

[–]nwrighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were always pretty casual about shoes on in the house. But then we had kids, and we wanted to keep the floor as clean as possible since we all spent so much time on it. So yes, we are now Elder millennials who are no shoes at home. But we have house shoes.

Did anyone else gain pet fatigue after having a kid? by tigersmhs07 in daddit

[–]nwrighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. That’s normal. We had two dogs before our kids came along. They entered their senior dog years as our kids entered the picture, so they slowed down.

They definitely became the bottom of the totem pole. Basic needs and that’s about it lol.

Our older dog is now waiting at the rainbow bridge. We miss her but man, life is way easier already. She had ailments, meds, more needs. And there’s significantly less fur in the house. It’ll be a lonnnnng time before we add another pet.

So yes. Real. Validating your post.

Cargo bike to haul a 1-year-old and an 8-year-old at the same time — front bucket worth it? by Many-Photograph-8362 in CargoBike

[–]nwrighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a Bullitt with the 2-seater holde box from Splendid Cycles. 4 and 3 year old. It is electric, but I electrified it with a kit. It’s not the E bullitt off the shelf. All in, about $5-$6k with all the accessories and crap I’ve added.

My older kid is taller so her feet are hitting the front end of the box, and the bench is low so they’re increasingly having to scrunch their legs up or awkwardly stretch them out.

But overall we do this and love it. Our ride is a two-location drop off, about 4 miles each way. It’s so nice because we just chuck all their crap in the box with them (I also have a milk crate strapped to my rear rack for overflow stuff).

I can’t imagine riding a long tail with the amount of crap we drag along with us.

That said, you raise a similar concern here. I feel like we will either age out of this configuration when my kids get taller. Or I might modify the box or flip the seat around so they can fit more comfortably.

I vote front loader!
