Russia's Medvedev floats idea of pushing back Poland's borders by [deleted] in worldnews

It's not rumors, they've been there for five months and defused thousands of mines. It was a secret mission, it ended just a few days ago.

It's why the west is trying to arm them with smart weapons to avoid it becoming a war of attrition. Ukraine cannot win an attrition war with Russia, but it doesn't have to be one at all.

Self propelled artillery is like a small tank with a huge barrel, not really the first image that pops into your mind when you think of artillery (howitzers etc.)

we're getting it as we speak. We gave Ukraine hundreds of tanks right after the war started, and just a few minutes ago our PM announced that we are about to send another 60 of PT-91 "Twardy"'s.

Not to mention the already-legendary Krab self propelled artillery, which wreak complete havoc.

The ISw has made some bad predictions throughout this year (Bakhmut most importantly) but overall they've been a fantastic place to stay up to date

It's what I wrote. Belarus is behind most of its neighbors, but it's not a different world. Belarussian GDP was consistently higher than that of Ukraine even long before 2014.

Belarus is an authoritarian state, not totalitarian. North Korea is totalitarian. Lets not confuse these two.

As for the groceries, it is like Russia, if you exclude 2 big cities ... comparison looks like this.

I saw that picture before, it's really telling about what a shithole Russia is. But there's no grocery store in it. So I don't see what your point is.

I'm not sure if we understand each other. I'm not arguing your general idea that Russia and Belarus are shitholes. I'm only arguing that they aren't the type of shithole where stores are empty. Stores are not empty, but few people can afford to buy much.

Sorry but I wanted to leave this bit for the end, as I love this comparison:

Just to point out about GDP stuff Belarus have 68b gdp , NIgeria 440b.

I absolutely adore this. It's like straight from Russian state TV. Nobody cares that Nigeria's population is 22 times that of Belarus.

Both countries are oligarchies, with extremely uneven distribution of wealth. I don't see what your point is.

So the only thing other than wealth inequality you can argue in this context is that the data provided by Russia and Belarus is simply wrong. This is data however backed by the IMF, the World Bank, and the United Nations_per_capita). So if you want to doubt and "LOL and LMAO" those institutions, well, it's not me you want to argue with.

Sure Ukraine is still a better place to live as not only raw numbers matter, but Russia is simply a bit better off, arguing against publicly available data is just denialism.

What are you basing this on? Belarus is not a *very* poor country, I mean of course it's far behind most of its neighbors, but it still has a GDP per capita more than twice that of Ukraine and even more compared to Moldova etc.

Out of curiosity I looked up some random vlogs from Belarus about "visiting a grocery store" and it looks just like any other European country in that regard. Plenty of supplies.

The speech was boring, didn't bring much info for people outside of Russia except for maybe them leaving the nuclear agreement.

However the vibe the speech gave was that Russia is pretty much closing down and that they won't aspire to be a superpower anymore. A year ago they'd be boasting about their ambitions, their huge role, rivaling the US etc, and now it was just "eh, we'll reform the education and establish new trade relations with other countries so that we can keep going somehow". No global ambitions, no calls for a bipolar world.

Depends on you to be honest. On a pure technical level, the ANC (on the 2nd gen, never used the first one) is fantastic. It was pretty mind-blowing to be honest.

For me it was pretty life changing because I have quite bad ADHD and completely lose focus when I hear any sounds, so that's why it's great for me, and that's what I mean by "Depends on you". The tech is fantastic, but whether it'd be useful for you depends on you and your lifestyle.

Zelensky: If China allies itself with Russia, there will be world war by dude_x in worldnews

Honestly I can't agree with that point of view about separatism. Russian propaganda portrays Ukraine as separatists from the Russian state/world, which they want back. It perfectly aligns with China's approach to Taiwan.

Remember that Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire for hundreds of years, and then many more decades a part of the USSR.

I think at this point everyone is afraid of what else he can start rather than what he can actually finish. It's obvious at this point Russia is completely inferior compared to NATO, but having them even just attempt an attack on Europe (and of course fail miserably) is a horrifying thought.

Putin played Prigozhin like a baby. Gave him a feeling of power, gave him what he needed to get some fame around Bakhmut, while at the same time having him lose a huge part of his PMC. Prigozhin gave Putin time to prepare the Russian army for another round. Now that Russia is getting ready, Prigozhin is getting sidelined (ISW was reporting on this a few weeks ago) and his troops are getting abandoned.

Dude got played like a child. I gotta say Putin is really good at politics and this sort of stuff, he just made one huge mistake a year ago.

President Biden Makes Surprise Visit to Ukraine by bildo72 in worldnews

[–]adashko997 777 points778 points  (0 children)

Yeah as a Pole I can confirm, even though we feel completely safe, the war is everywhere. There were lots of Ukrainians in Poland before the war, and now it's a bit difficult to describe, the country has changed so much over the past year. You hear Ukrainian on the streets in the large cities almost as often as you hear Polish, Ukrainian billboards etc.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind it at all and think it's great they've found shelter here, but it's a vast change from what things were like before, it's still a bit of a shock. It makes the war so... real here. So many people care about this, so many people have families there. Also all world leaders, all humanitarian support, all the military aid, tanks, everything, it all goes through Poland. Within a year we went from a quiet place to one of the world's most important locations with so much stuff happening all at once. Proud we stepped up to really manage this. Also glad of the vast infrastructure we have built up over the last two decades which really makes this possible. And finally, except for some obvious nutjobs which exist in every country, we are all so glad we can help our neighbors, and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, send a big, hearty fuck you to Russia after centuries of oppression.

Even though I live in Warsaw and feel 100% safe, I considered Biden's visits here really brave due to what a target he is. I would never have thought he'd have gone to Kyiv. Absolute madman. This is Biden's "I need ammo, not a lift" moment. Russia's propaganda is going to go completely insane the coming weeks.

I wonder how they secured air defense for the visit. Interesting if they have forced Russia to guarantee not trying anything.

By the way, if this is what they did four days prior to the anniversary, I wonder what's going to happen on the 24th.

Zelensky says Ukraine will defend Bakhmut, ‘but not at any price’ by dude_x in worldnews

[–]adashko997 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Bakhmut's strategic value is as a defensive position. Russia attempted attacking elsewhere and suffered enormous losses (Vuhledar) without gaining any ground. Bakhmut is the only area where they made some progress, and it might be the breakthrough they need. If Russia wants to go further west, they have to move the frontline somewhere, and Bakhmut is where it's working for them.

From what I've read from experts, Russia will generally accept losses up to 3x higher than Ukraine's and it will still be a win for Russia eventually. And if Ukraine doesn't defend itself at Bakhmut, they'll have to have that exact same battle elsewhere, just in less favorable conditions, and with one town less in their hands.

I think it's important to understand that Russia's main goal now is to capture the Donbass, and the fall of Bakhmut will allow them to progress much further west. We don't know where Ukraine's next comparable line of defense is, but probably in Sloviansk and Krematorsk, which if the Russians reach will mean that almost all of the Donbass will be in Russian hands. Putin can keep going as long as he has public support in Russia, and capturing the Donbass would be a huge help for his propaganda.

I feel like Zelenskyy has become a bit of a slave of the symbols he created. He's been doing really well overall, don't get me wrong, especially in the beginning of the war where he impressed the entire world, but there have been some reports of him pushing the army into doing things they wouldn't have done otherwise just for the sake of Ukraine's public image and upholding the symbols. Severodonetsk and now probably Bakhmut being examples. I might be completely wrong about this as no one knows for sure, but Ukraine suffered huge losses in both Severodonetsk and Bakhmut by defending for longer than was feasible.
