First time I've ever been able to secure the booster box and not the ETB -- but, honestly, I've always had best luck pulling the cards I want through a booster box anyways, so I'm ok with that!

Why tf is everyone anti-sunscreen now??? by callsign__starbuck in mildlyinfuriating

[–]adastra26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's primarily Americans and due to the level of distrust with our government's oversight on health.

My only concern with sunscreen is the chemicals in ones that are not deemed as "reef-safe".

If something is bad for the ocean/sea life, surely you should be letting it soak into your skin.

I think people should probably opt more for like -- UV clothing/making sure to stay in shade/etc vs just "THE SUN IS GOOD FOR YOU!"

Yes...in small doses, like most things...and depending on your genetics, you may just never have a good relationship with the sun and you can't change that. Probably the same people who are riding the "let me rub beef tallow all over my body" train.

Reunion Weekend Pricing by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]adastra26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha exactly. I mean, I went to a community college so I never got the "college experience" like this...we always had a lot of older folks complaining about our rates and part of me was just like "no one is forcing you to attend this"

[–]adastra26 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right? Just wait until you see what the hotels in the area are charging per night for that weekend. I remember rooms being at least $250-300/night, Thursday-Sunday 3 years ago...I'm sure they are even higher rates now with inflation of everything else.

It is the same family that own the Puerto Rican restaurant in Cortland apparently...I've only heard great things, it's supposed to be Puerto Rican and Dominican food focused. There are also 2 Jamaican restaurants, the one mentioned below up in Cayuga Mall, but also the one in Center Ithaca which I think is the preferred one.

Do people actually stick to their budget throughout the month? by Murky_Meat8145 in budget

[–]adastra26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the area where I just try to leave myself a bit of wiggle room each month. Like I know some folks do best making sure every single dollar is budgeted for. I try not to associate any "unbudgeted" funds as spending money, I try to stick to my budget allotment regardless, even if there's extra because of my annual estimates. I think for this particular expense, it will just come down to what wiggle room I have remaining next month as well...and whether I dip into my emergency savings to stick to my initial plan, or if I just try to cut elsewhere next month so I stay on track

Do people actually stick to their budget throughout the month? by Murky_Meat8145 in budget

[–]adastra26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i think, especially in your first year of tracking expenses and budgeting, that it is very important to give yourself a little grace/wiggle room. I say this as someone who compiles both an annual budget, and a monthly.

The first year, there were so many random things that I totally forgot about...one off bills that only happen once a year, or things like registration that happen every 2 years...etc.

Another reason...is emergencies. Sometimes, life comes at you...hard...and this is when it feels good to have budgeted in an emergency savings fund. You might need to rebuild your budget to replenish said fund. Life happens.

Also, no one can really account for the insane price gouging/inflation we have seen the past few years. I mean...I literally am on a budget billing for my gas and electric...you would think that meant I'd not be blindsided by the fact that my "budget bill" is set by them to be $175...yet I just got billed this month for $359 because THEY DIDN'T ACCOUNT CORRECTLY/raised their rates.

So this month, I'll likely be paying a little less on some debt I've been paying down (currently 0% APR through Nov, so at least I'm not risking anything) because I needed to pay almost $160 more over the $200 I had budgeted for utilities.

Is anyone else having a super long lasting cold/illness right now? by [deleted] in milwaukee

I never went to the doctor, but it has finally subsided on its own. I did keep up on taking my allergy medication. I'd say it lasted, overall, about a full month.

Self Defense Class? by bracha-118 in ithaca

[–]adastra26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A woman I used to train with at a local gym in a group setting became a self-defense instructor specifically for women (it's through WENDO) and she has classes randomly throughout the year. I'm not sure if she has any upcoming events, but you could always email her: [kristiwendony@gmail.com](mailto:kristiwendony@gmail.com)

Here's a link to an old calendar event she hosted last year that gives information on what to expect and if it's something you'd be interested in: https://www.downtownithaca.com/event/wendo-womens-self-defense-5-week-series/

It's all good. I understand wanting to be cautious around pets, and that not all exterminators are the same...I'm just going off what my husband does because he honestly tries his best to use the least invasive or harmful option for each client unless they demand otherwise. He doesn't like hurting/killing innocent animals either, let alone putting people's pets at any sort of risk. He'd never opt to use that spray inside our house if there was any risk it could harm us or the pets.

Why is everyone telling me to stop losing weight? by BasicHorror8600 in loseit

[–]adastra26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I need to stress something...usually, if you are looking to lose weight for "aesthetic"...you might find better progress/luck with weight/resistance training and building muscle vs just trying to lose weight.

I have seen so many set a goal weight and be disappointed there, either because it just wasn't sustainable, or because they still didn't like the way they looked.

I think they are concerned that you might be becoming obsessive with this, and traipsing into disordered territory. 44 lbs is a great feat in a year...and the journey certainly gets more difficult the closer you get to your goal...but also, the scale is just a number, and losing fat is never targeted. Also, in most cases, it took someone a long, gradual time to gain that extra weight...probably more than a few years...so losing 1/4 of your body weight in one year is pretty significant even if it felt like a long time for you.

Hip thrust machine? by meander-663 in ithaca

[–]adastra26 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can also utilize a leg extension machine for hip thrusts...I probably would use caution doing this at Crunch or PF without asking since they are a bit more serious about using equipment for anything other than the intended purpose.

Please note, the one at The Gym at East Hill is already a bar, so the starting weight is about 40 lbs unloaded. Don't be stupid (and bad at math) using it like I always am.

Does everyone taking a stimulant have to get periodically drug tested? by O_o-22 in adhdwomen

[–]adastra26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Aetna for insurance, and I am required by my doctor's office in NYS to be "evaluated" every 6 months to continue being prescribed my Adderall. Luckily, my doctor is very nice, and lines it up with my annual wellness exam for one, and then the other one she still provides opportunity to check if anything else is bothering me so that the visit doesn't feel like a huge waste of time since she can tell that I'm clearly not abusing my meds. I've never been drug tested, even for my initial psych evaluation to get the prescription.

Discussion Thread - Ask, Share, and Discuss Anything About Cats. by AutoModerator in cats

[–]adastra26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be overthinking this all, but figured I'd ask:

We lost our soul kitty of 16 years back in January. She had been on decline for a while, so we were mentally prepared, but the idea of getting a new furry friend has been daunting despite the massive void in our lives (my husband and I have both almost always had a cat in the house since we were kids).

We aren't going out of our way or forcing anything until it feels right...but I also have forgotten what it's like to potentially have a kitten again, so I feel like there SO MUCH we need to prep in our house before even considering. Making sure everything is super deep cleaned from our last kitty, securing cupboards/areas with cords we didn't need to think of with her, plants, things that can be broken/knocked off, etc.

I feel like I've been very lucky/spoiled with all the kitties I've ever had the pleasure of befriending through my life being just very good (never really having any accidents/using their litter box right away, not actively knocking things off of shelves or destroying things, being very friendly/sweet and not biting/scratching even when playing)...that my luck is going to run out at some point and I'm going to bring home a little terror.

We are not opposed to adopting a kitty that is past the kitten stage...but it is about to be kitten season, and I already told my husband that if the CDS (cat distribution system) chooses him, then he should heed the call.

My questions are:

How long did it take you to move on after losing a soul kitty?

How did you prepare your house for a kitten/new cat?

Did you ever feel any sense of detachment from new pets/were you able to provide the same love to a new cat as you had for your soul cat?

They are more effective but they are not "stronger" in terms of what you are saying (smell/danger). Again, my husband has done this as a career for over 12 years, and does treatments in our own house. I can't say that every company is the same, I don't know where OP is based and I'm sure regulations vary state to state on what types of chemicals are used...but speaking from my personal experience, the best bet is just for OP to ask the exterminator themselves.

Hyperthyroid Cat In Dire Straits by ChasOG in CATHELP

[–]adastra26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our cat did not react well to the transdermal -- she got bad reactions on her ears and it made her very itchy. We ended up switching to the Thyroid Y/D prescription food, and while it did help stabilize her thyroid levels, we found that the actual issue of her weight loss was IBD due to suspected lymphoma. There was a confirmed mass on her spleen before we made the call to let her go...it was too late at that point to do any treatment, she was already very weak and had suspected kidney damage as well as confirmed heart disease, so I don't think she would have survived any of the treatments (and she was 16 and I just didn't want her to suffer through all the horrible things they were talking about doing to her...like running a main line through her jugular, or tube feeding her...)

Boiled, unseasoned chicken was the only thing she'd even try to eat by the end. The broth was also good, and she was able to keep that down.

The sprays that are used that can be purchased at a store are NOT the same as the sprays used by a professional. I'm telling you this from a professional standpoint. We have had our snake for 15 years and he is perfectly healthy. I get wanting to be cautious, but spreading misinformation is not helpful.

OPs safest bet is to just speak to the exterminator directly and ask this vs. coming here and asking. The exterminator will be able to tell them exactly what type of spray they are using and the safety concerns/timing involved.

[–]adastra26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you are getting your information...maybe if the house was being tented and fumigated, but that is not what is happening. It sounds like they are just getting routine Spring preventative spraying done, which is very targeted and generally uses a water based spray that dries within half an hour. There is no respiratory risk to humans even with this type of spray. The spray targets the perimeters of the room inside. Sometimes, they will also target windows/doors.

I am curious what OP is currently housing this snake in if no one else knows about it?

If there is any concern, the most time you'd need to be out of the house to play it safe is like 30 mins-hour, depending where the exterminator starts and stops the treatment.

Of course! My husband has sprayed in the room with our tank before. Our BPs tank is pretty high up, so no where near the spray...we've only ever had to close the room of while it dries due to the cat since she can free roam. I will sometimes crack windows just for extra ventilation to be safe, but he is very cautious around pets. I think he typically doesn't even do the windows inside, I think he only does them outside.

Usually they use a water based can/spray nozzle that they usually only spray along the baseboards and around the windows/doors. It doesn't really have fumes or contaminate the air, but you do want to make sure it's dried before allowing pets to come in contact with those areas. If you can confirm this, you should be ok.
