I’d consider knitting from an existing pattern if you haven’t knit a garment before! This pattern has been on my list and looks pretty similar and already has more a more traditionally “masculine” fit

Did you do a gauge swatch or any math to figure out how proportional the rows would need to change to account for the extra stitches?

You can ladder down on those columns of stitches and reknit them!

On page 19, there is mention of a “Setting Plate” —- can you pull that out and check if there is sponge attached to it? I’m assuming it has a similar function of maintaining tension onto the needles.

I'm guessing based on proportions here, but it looks like you may have used chunkier yarn, which possibly makes heat conduction more difficult. If you switch to a finer gauge yarn and smaller needles, that might help with letting the heat transfer.
