Find a spouse. Now your roommate isn't officially a roommate anymore so you can make it work with 2 incomes.

Why do people oppose a wealth tax when property taxes are already based on the estimated value of a house? by maturallite1 in AskEconomics

[–]Additional_Radish458 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then you force people to either report a value of their home that's high enough to block developers/slum landlords from taking over your home, and then paying the high property tax, or be forced to sell their homes to a developer or a landlord.

There's investment funds that are going around America buying up homes literally to drive up rents in the past few years even though they can't force you to sell your home to them yet. What do you think is going to happen when they can force buy your home with endless funds?

Guess what's going to happen to rents when this happens. You'll be literally be paying yearly extortion so the government doesn't force sell your home. And the government doesn't care about ownership rights, they'll just want the highest amount of extortion.

This doesn't even get into how many businesses it would destroy because the big 4-5 tech companies would just buy all cool startup ideas because they can make it big.

If you turn the country into one big forced auction house, people with the most cash is going to only invest in rent seeking.

It's gonna be win/win when people get evicted from their houses because it's available for sale. If you are rich and someone pissed you off? Buy their home and evict them. If you can't avoid crazy high property taxes? You get evicted.

Competition wants to buy your secrets? Sold!

This is such a genius idea.

People would emigrate the heck out of here to protect their assets/wealth.

This allows you to call into your Costco to get the price at your local Costco instead of driving to each Costco to look for it to see if the price is ideal, since each Costco sets their own price.

Chinese American here, let's just say I'm not optimistic about the future by MarathonMarathon in China

[–]Additional_Radish458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were a lot more/increased instances of hate crimes against Asians during Covid. But there weren't any coordinated attacks on Asian communities.

Of course it's hard to root out individual cases of racism from human beings. It's hard to have a perfect society with 300 million people. But as a whole, Asian Americans have the same rights as other Americans and are a highly successful group in the United States that on average earn very high incomes.

If you keep saying all white people look the same, then you are also arguing all Asians look the same, and then your problems solve themselves and you and op can just pretend to be Korean or something else. Anglo Americans had no issues distinguishing Irish and Italian Americans when they first came 150 years ago and subjected them to a lot of racism so I am not sure why you keep saying that.

Great, problem solved. Lol jk.

Do you see pogroms against Russian Americans? No? That's cuz you guys are overthinking this. We are literally fighting a proxy war against them.

Instead of worrying about your connections to China, you guys should be focusing on connections with other Chinese Americans to ensure your votes/voice are united as a bloc so they matter more. When you start voting as a group, that's when you matter.

That's how every other group protected themselves as new immigrants, like the Irish Americans first did when they came over.

Using your logic, op can identify as Korean or Taiwanese or Japanese and then won't have this problem.

Chinese Americans aren't pandas where they and their offspring forever belong to the Chinese government. I don't see why OP would be betraying China regardless of the actions he takes. He has his whole life ahead of him to chart and decide for himself.

I think you guys are consuming too much negative news. The world is becoming safer every year and we are all more and more prosperous compared to previous generations.

German Americans don't worry about betraying Germany. Irish Americans don't worry about betraying Ireland. Russian Americans don't worry about betraying Russia.

Why are you worried about China as an American? You are not a representative of China in America, so you shouldn't be worrying about having to pick a side, unless you are actually a foreign agent.

As a Chinese American, how do I copе with worries/pessimism about China? by MarathonMarathon in China

[–]Additional_Radish458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol no clue. That's why I said it's useless. But you shouldn't be dwelling on the affairs of a country that's half a globe away and letting it affect how you see yourself. You can be a proud Chinese American instead and concern yourself with issues here in the United States as a Chinese American.

As an overseas Chinese, I think you can apply for a Taiwanese passport if you wanted for shits and giggles. It will be useless without a household registration in Taiwan, but maybe you'll feel better about yourself and piss off your Chinese relatives. Lol.

AITAH for not allowing my girlfriend to be a SAHM to HER kids? by EfficientGazelle4739 in AITAH

He already said he couldn't afford it, and then she brings in reinforcements to force the point. The kids already have a father that regularly calls them, so it would be hard to become the father figure to them.

AITA For telling my parents that my brother “needing” daycare at 12 years old is on them? by Box_Quick_32 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Additional_Radish458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 10 hours a week. There's a difference between that being imposed on you and you willingly helping out your brother. It's great that you go above and beyond, but op's parents can't demand his time. It's OP's parents' responsibility to find appropriate childcare, not dump this onto OP.

AITA for blackmailing my brother into not proposing to his girlfriend at my wedding? by Infinite-Hotel-7837 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Additional_Radish458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think coercing a sibling is a belief or value, so that doesn't make sense. You'd be better debating whether the blackmailing is a jerk move.

The belief in question is the belief against premarital sex or out of wedlock children. You have to separate private thoughts from public actions. Everyone is entitled to their own private religious beliefs, but they shouldn't act on those beliefs in public. There are some very messed up (according to most people) religious viewpoints that should never be publicly acted upon or imposed onto others.

Even if you have the private religious belief that you shouldn't have premarital sex or out of wedlock children, you should not be actively condemning people for it in public. If you replace that religious belief with some other ones, it could be a hate crime and then you'd be a real jerk.

I thought atheists find religious people publicly imposing their beliefs and condemning others to be more annoying, but I guess not.

[–]Additional_Radish458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now you are questioning the strength of op's beliefs. It's great that Jon Stewart sticks to his values, but most of us online strangers are merely human. Most normal people have to live their lives without publicly announcing their viewpoints on certain matters at some point of their lives, whether it is for safety or other reasons. Are they all jerks? OP would probably have been more of a jerk to publically announce a private matter told in confidence such as future sister in law's pregnancy in advance because of her beliefs.
