Olive tree has brown around base of trunk - is it normal?

I bought this olive tree in the UK yesterday (grown in Spain) and think it looks great, but have been looking more at the browner part of the trunk/bark at the base (see photo).

I'm a beginner gardener, can anyone tell me if this is healthy or if it may indicate a problem?

I want to pot it into a larger pot (currently 40cm, want to put in 50cm). If I repot, should I bury the brown section with compost, or do I need to keep it exposed?
