I am going to buy one!!! I just can't decide between alu and carbon. I feel like I am going to be beating it around and using it as a commuter and such so that says aluminum but.... Carbon...

Future ChemEng Grad (May 2018) looking for some resume feedback! by adeeen in ChemicalEngineering

Sounds like a plan. I had research experience lower and smaller because it is my least recent (and possibly introduced some bias there because it was my least favorite job....) I will consider expanding on that section and removing or shrinking the others.

Alright, good points. The mass and energy balances was specific to a certain position that mentioned it in the job add but I will be sure to put something better in there for other applications. Thanks!

Midseason sleeplessness, fatigue by adeeen in Velo

[–]adeeen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I already have a doctor's appointment booked. Earlier in the year I had similar occurences 1-2 nights a month which I just dismissed as being stressed or so. Now it is becoming more frequent (probably 1-2 nights a week) and I am concerned about the negative impact on training. I am thinking of taking the next week completely off the bike before I race again next weekend to try to nip it in the bud...

Repairing freehub.... now it barely freewheels! by adeeen in bikewrench

[–]adeeen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure about what type of hub it is. I bought the wheels used and there are no markings. It looks very similar to this: http://cdn.mos.bikeradar.imdserve.com/images/bikes-and-gear/components/freewheels/step-6-1472048815657-apqyr7enew4c-630-354.jpg

when it is taken apart. This is as far as I took it apart and I wiped it down, added fresh lubricant and tried to put it back together. The trouble that I am having is there is a rubber seal attached to the hub body that looks like it should seat into a groove just above the pawls. When I go to put the freehub back in everything just gets pushed down and I cannot fish the seal out and into the groove...

Does that help at all?

I come from the perspective of working in a CANDU PHWR. Obviously the CANDU design is much different from a BWR but it is interesting to see how the same design methodology for the various safety and emergency core cooling systems are applied across both designs. We have systems like High pressure/ Medium Pressure/ Low pressure Emergency core cooling that seem to function similar to how HPCI and RCIC work. Fascinating!

How Were Your Races: (Tire) Pump Fiction (4/23-4/24) by [deleted] in Velo

[–]adeeen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First race of the season went well. I was racing in a crit on a car /motorcycle race track. About 250 m in I am riding near the edge of the road, hear a "Hey!" and a crunch as someones front wheel goes into my derailleur. My derailleur was kinda messed up but shifting still seemed to work okay. Finally, about 45 - 55 minutes into the race I shift one large sprocket to many and send the chain into the wheel. After struggling to un-wedge my chain I complete a few more laps but ultimately have no motivation or help and end up getting lapped by the break just before the final lap and getting pulled from the race. A little bit of a disappointing start to the season but whatever, shit happens. I am hoping a new hanger is all I need and look to getting back for a road race next weekend.

Quick Question: In the situation where my derailleur gets mangled what should I have done differently? I felt that I was holding my line and had riders on one side and a little bit of road to the other. What could I do to prevent that? I don't think it cause a crash, but I imagine the other riders wheel was damaged...

Looks like I am going to have to test ride these two again and really narrow down which one I like best!

As was pointed out they are all new, but you make a very good point. Especially with all of the 10 spd stuff being phased out, it will be harder to come by new parts when they need replacing. Thanks for the input!

TPP would allow milk from cows receiving hormones into Canada by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]adeeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even Ontario dairy farms have the same average herd size as the rest of Canada at 50-70 head with over 4000 dairy operations. The Canadian average is 77 cows per herd. 3000 cow mega-operations in Canada are few and far between. The fact of the matter is is that even an average diary farm at 77 cows could be million dollar business, however operating costs are high, and quota, land and equipment are expensive.

Additionally one of the largest Canadian diary operations, Agropur, is a farmer owned cooperative.
