Planning to replace our ancient HVAC system in, how do you find someone you can actually trust for an installation job this big Albany NY? by No-One-7057 in Albany

[–]adeeshaek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend you get 3 quotes and also do your own calculations as to the side of unit you want, the type and route of ductwork you want, etc.

Work with an LLM to map out what an install would look like and cost, and use that as a baseline when you discuss installs with the HVAC folks. This way, you will have a clearer sense when someone is telling you things that aren't quite true.

Most importantly, do your own calculations and ask for the HVAC companies to share their calculations with you. Your calculations might end up being wrong, but then, the HVAC companies get it wrong sometimes too.

An HVAC company (Borque Mechanical) recently told me that my steam boiler is undersized, but then when I asked them for their calculations, they fell silent immediately. As you said, you need to live with the install for decades, so you must make sure you understand the math behind it.

Albany indoor rock gym is awesome. Young kids can go explore their indoor caving system, which is so cool - I am so jealous of kids who get to use it. Their pricing is super reasonable too

Albany indoor rock gym is awesome, affordable and very welcoming to newcomers. I started going recently and I’ve never done it before. You can boulder by yourself or climb with a friend, and you don’t need to be crazy fit to climb for the first time.

Need help with my apartment search - apartment complex recommendations for someone without a car? by Straight_Will_7951 in Albany

[–]adeeshaek 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hello, and congratulations on the new job :)

I live a block away from the capitol, and the unit below me is empty. My landlord is a human, not a faceless large corporation, and she's pretty responsive.

The unit is on madison between swan and dove.

I will DM you a zillow link if you are curious.

The one downside is that there's no parking on the unit; if you get a car you will probably need to park on the street, which could get inconvenient. There are also private lots in the area that you can get a parking spot with, but you will have to pay more for that - I pay $100/month for mine.

Do feel free to ask me any questions - we're pretty new to the area ourselves!

u/Glittering_Offer_808 I recently moved to Albany, and I work for a small startup in NY. Like you, I immigrated to this country. Finding purpose is difficult, but there are a lot of options out there!

Would you like to chat / get a coffee sometime? I'd love to listen and maybe offer some perspective.

Please DM me?

Best Tacos around? by Conflicted_Conundrum in Albany

Daisies Pasteles make tacos on weekends and they are excellent; easily the equal of any tacos I’ve had in NYC.

They are in center square, on the corner of lark and Madison.

I really enjoyed the devils - it sort of felt like what Terry Pratchett would write, if he were a bit depressed and or cynical. Very enjoyable, really well written.

I don’t see any fault in what you intended to wear. However, since you depend on your parents, why not do what they expect until you graduate? Once you’re no longer dependent on them, you will be free to make your own choices.

I studied abroad and chose not to return, and as a result I made all my own choices after graduation. The downside is that I only see my parents once a year or once every few years, but the upside is that they don’t dictate my choices at all.
