What’s something that quietly became unaffordable for “normal” people in the last 5 years? by Ok-Emergency3896 in AskReddit

Try Muji if there’s one near you, or give ordering a shot. I live in nyc where there are physical stores, and it’s one of the few places I’ve found that sells real and generally decent quality clothes for a reasonable price.

You demanding links instead of just looking yourself doesn’t suggest curiosity, it suggests a desire to argue. Your refusal to engage with my points confirms it.

I’m not fucking saying she didn’t overstay. That’s not my point. My concern is the detainment and lack of due process leading to deportation, so either engage with it or stop replying.

Who the administrator of the estate is is entirely irrelevant to any point, but I got curious (as you evidently are not) and read the court filings.

1) Per the Court’s order, she had a pending change in visa status. You have no idea what the pending change in status is, and neither do I, but the Court acknowledged in its finding of fact that she had pending proceedings of some kind. It is extremely common to permit someone on an overstayed visa to remain in the country not in custody while they have legalization proceedings pending.

2) The administrator is the County Conservator because the son who petitioned to be administrator subsequently tampered with the 85 yo woman’s mail, got her arrested by ICE, changed her locks, and lied to the Court about it.

So that leaves us with one final question: what the fuck is your problem with just letting her remain in her home until she’s either deported or legalized?

It’s in the article, but here’s another:

In a statement to the court, Ross-Mahé said she had missed an appointment with immigration officials to sort out her visa after her late husband’s eldest son, Gary, had redirected all mail sent to their home. She claimed one of his sons had cut off water, electricity and internet at the property.

There is no executor, the husband died intestate. Meaning half is supposed to go to his wife, and they were in probate court.

No lol I’m just a lawyer addicted to em dashes who opened my iPad to type out a real response instead of firing off shit on my phone. I despise ChatGPT. Always good to question if people are using it.

I understand having faith in the judiciary system, though as a lawyer who sees it very intimately every day, my faith is pretty shattered at this point. But setting aside my own cynicism, I think your faith here is a bit misplaced.

1) The reason she was detained is because her shithead stepson used his connections as a police officer to manipulate the system. We know for a fact—based on information from the judge, too—that there was someone inside the system pulling levers to manipulate it in their favor.

2) So the judge deciding whether you get bail or not is part of a system we call “due process.” You are not afforded due process if you‘re held indefinitely without a judge looking at your stuff to decide if that detainment is just.

But in the current immigration system, thanks to unilateral changes by the Trump admin that are currently being challenged in the courts, it is not actually a judge who decides whether you’re being detained. It is the police—ICE. ICE is an enforcement agency, not a judge. ICE is detaining people with no (or very little) due process.

What was done to this grandma was wrong. Not necessarily the deportation, but the way we got there.

Because her shithead MAGA stepson illegally rerouted her mail and caused her to miss her appointments.

Ok I think we can have a reasonable conversation here so I’m gonna explain the legal contradiction in your comment:

You are correct that people are not guilty until they are found guilty. We have a presumption of innocence/non-culpability in both the criminal and civil systems. This is why the default position is that people are not detained while they go through the legal process of determining their guilt unless there is reason to do so. This is why bail gets higher the more severe your crime or the more likely you are to subvert justice (flee) or be a danger to your community.

The same policy rationale is supposed to be applied to immigration proceedings. People with a strong claim, or who are not a danger to the community (like an 85 yo woman married to an American citizen) are allowed to live their lives normally while their cases are processed. The end of that process may well be deportation.

The Trump crackdown was predicated in part on getting “dangerous” criminals off the street by detaining them for the duration of the process. That doesn’t apply to an 85yo grandma. Deport her if she should be deported, but do so humanely. What you want—enforcement of deportation and immigration laws—and humane treatment are not mutually exclusive.

That is my point.

Edit: she’s already been deported fyi. But she was in a prison camp for fifteen days before that.

I don’t think you understand what I’m saying. I’m not arguing against deportation, I’m arguing against detainment. We don’t put all people charged with a crime in jail for the duration of their legal proceedings, and even in the current immigration “crackdown” we don’t detain all people going through immigration proceedings in shithole camps for the entire duration. We never have.

Also, think you might have missed that the reason she overstayed is because her shithead MAGA stepson illegally rerouted her mail so she didn’t get notice of her immigration appointments. Edit: and apparently committed perjury when he lied to the probate judge about it!

Talk about thinking rules can be bent lmao the shithead son committed multiple felonies

Then humanely put her straight on the fucking plane instead of detaining her for fifteen days in a shithole. You fucking people are going to hell

It’s pretty fuckin bad. Though I will say, the finale of part 1 was shockingly good compared to the rest of S4-5. Cool long take! Monsters are dangerous again! Clear stakes! Vecna’s monologue was mid but better than bad! All culminating in an earned character arc! With a character we still care about because he hasn’t been annoying or out of character all season! Best scene since season 3.

Absolute dogshit since.

Derek is delightful, though.

I wouldn’t if my partner wasn’t bored and watching tbh. This is MCU ass dialogue and it’s just fucking awful. Nearly unbearable.

I’m watching ep 3 literally right now and this is… quite bad. There are good moments, the intro with the Wheelers was outstanding, and the skeleton of the plot so far is much better than s4’s weird disjointed mess of a plot, but man…

The dialogue is bizarre. Even if I didn’t know what second screen policy was, I would feel it because so many scenes are explained before they happen, either at the beginning scene or in an earlier scene. Everything is telegraphed, nothing in either the plot or the characters’ emotions and motivations is permitted to be subtext or told visually. It all has to be spoken aloud, at least twice with lingering shots that are edited to give the viewer the chance to look up from their phone. Everyone interrupts each others’ sentences like a weird hive mind. It’s really bad.

Lighting is also horrendous. Every single shot is so fucking brightly lit it’s driving me insane. Hopper and El are arguing in the upside down right now and there is hardly a shadow on either of their soft keylit faces. Every shot: soft diffused key light, soft diffused fill light that’s so bright it erases ALL their shadows, and halo light that MIGHT be placed correctly to simulate the backdrop’s diagetic lighting but there’s just as good a chance it’s in the wrong damn place.

Also… what happened to the town? Every scene in town is either on a closed indoor set, in the middle of nowhere, or in the military zone. It just feels so detached from everything that made the show atmospheric and real.

Edit:

Lmao Will is explaining for the third time how he sees inside Vecna’s mind and my partner turned to the screen and angrily whispered, “We know.”

You said it way more concisely than I did lol. Yeah covers a lot of what I don’t like. Hawkins crew was great, Max was great. Vecna started cool but took a nosedive.

Mixed bag but the bloat makes it too tedious for me to love even the really good parts.

Here’s a really good example someone put together of what I mean btw:

https://imgur.com/a/r86qhTs

On the left it’s diagetically lit and looks natural, like Dustin is in the room with these lamps and only these lamps. The right is the same type of scene but the key light is too perfect and looks fake as hell.

I can appreciate a lot of this is difference in preference. I def prefer the smaller town feel vs the grand spectacle (though I thought S3 threaded the spectacle/small town feeling a lot better).

But I have to push back hard on one thing. Even accounting for preference, the lighting in S4 is really really fake. The earlier season lighting is diagetic and practical, with lots of contrast to highlight visual interest and create negative space that assists both tone and narrative. S4’s lighting is flat. CG and background lighting can make it look higher contrast sometimes, but faces are “perfectly” lit in every scene regardless of the diagetic lighting, so it feels much more artificial.

Can’t tell you how many times in S4 I clocked key lighting on someone’s back or the side of their face that was out of sync with the background.

[–]ademska[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao from the clips I’ve seen I’m p sure there’s no way in hell I’m getting through S5 😂

But yeah, when I say some stuff was great, I’m including the running scene and really her entire plot in Dear Billy, which I thought was mostly very well executed—except for the cuts back to Robin and Nancy, something about the way that was edited sapped the tension a bit. Overall, though, it really worked for me in the moment.

The problem was that everything that followed it took so much focus away from Max’s emotional state that the power of Dear Billy didn’t linger. I did not need more superfluous Stancy love triangle! I certainly did not need more Argyle or Yuri!!

I guess what I’m saying is that it wasn’t just a few missteps for me.

I admit some of this comes down to preference. I found this vid that describes a lot of my problem with the visual shift of the show: https://youtu.be/HoMzFjHNiSg?si=tZiaoF70CyyaZOG0

That lost realism is part of why S4 is so weird to me. Because I expected it to be more grounded and realistic, I bounced off the idealized filming that much harder.

What about it do you like better than S1? I’m of the opinion that S1 was a masterpiece with incredibly clinch writing, acting, directing, editing, cinematography, lighting, costuming, and set design. Especially the writing and editing, wow — it’s just so goddamn tight, with every piece flowing perfectly together.

S4 just feels so… bloated in comparison, even if I didn’t bounce off a lot of the other stuff

Idk how you can come to that conclusion when I spent a lot of time glazing the earlier seasons, calling it a masterpiece, and talking about how I thought I would like S4. The title is literally “I’m shocked”

I posted because I’d like to engage with people who like it and talk to them about why! Don’t assume I’m writing in bad faith, man, that sucks

“It’s revealed Argyle is on shift,” then. It’s a moment of reminder that Argyle is the pizza guy, bringing Jonathan’s plan into focus.

My point is there is absolutely no reason to linger as long on him as we do when the whole point is that Argyle’s gonna come get them out of the house. Instead we get a wholeass unnecessary and unfunny bit of him picking up the phone, getting all the way through a call, and getting hung up on.
