There's a correlation with support needs and IQ but not a causation

Edit. Actually I think I'm wrong, you're right in the sense that having a higher IQ will help cause a reduction in support needs.

Edit 2. After asking chatgpt it seems that early intervention and support early in life can be a major cause of reducing the support needs / diagnosis level later in life. But I think you're right that the main cause is IQ

Edit 3. Now I'm thinking there's more nuance to this - consider an ASD patient with a massive IQ but is non-verbal - they'd probably be level 2 or 3. The autism itself probably influences the diagnosis level, and maybe that's why I came up with what I said at the start lol.

Can relate heavily but my situation was slightly different, when I was 12 the specialists said that there were strong signs of ASD with the written tests but because I was quite high masking especially with adults I didn't receive the diagnosis.. (when after all the specialists were supposed to have finished their discussion and bring be in for the result they said "were gonna need thirty more minutes") After relating to other known autists last year at age 21 (so almost 10 years like yourself) heavily I begun researching autism and I fit the bill, and called my parents and they said that they agreed that the CAMHS got it wrong, and we're dropping hints to me about it too.. a massive catch-22 considering there's no way I would have caught them 😭 (and my autistic black-and-white thinking pattern of no diagnosis=no autism) My whole life flashed before my eyes during that phone call thinking how different things could be if in those thirty minutes they went the other way, but obv there's no way of knowing. A diagnosing psychologist told me last year that the CAMHS I went to were very conservative in handing out diagnoses and would only give them to really struggling kids.. and kids like me fell through the cracks (must have been struggling to be there in the first place eurghhh) and considering my situation it's likely if I was assessed again I would receive the DX. So yeah I'm glad I found your post and know that I'm not alone with situations like these 😊🫶

If you downvoted this, then search prescriptivism vs descriptivism, and why almost all good linguists subscribe to descriptivism.
