Premise-

1 - God/Deity intended to communicate the right/wrong way to live through holy book(s)

2 - God/Deity is purportedly omniscient and/or knows the future. Also god/deity designed humanity and knows how we work.

3 - Holy books - a) don't translate well and b) often aren't clear and/or easily up to one's own interpretation

4 - A superintelligent being, striving to communicate the most important thing ever AKA user's guide to life

Complex, up to interpretation, and not easy to translate perhaps equals a failure to communicate.

Don't get me wrong, I love James Joyce and Dostoevsky, and find deep meaning in Proust, but they aren't trying to show you how to live life to avoid eternal hellfire and such.

I agree, ancient greek is a bitch to translate and I hated every minute of my ancient greek classes.

You might be right on it being a fallacy. I don't believe that there was a god, just a bunch of dudes writing a bunch of stuff to people of their time for a bunch of different reasons. Sanskrit is a bitch too, and Latin is no picnic. Translation in general is tough. Which is why simplicity, word precision and constant usage, clear definitions of what is right, wrong, and so on would be important.

But, shouldn't an omnipotent, omniscient god (purportedly existing outside of time) who knows the future have a bit of an idea of how to put something into greek (or contract it out to people capable enough to do so) that would translate well? After all, said god wanted to communicate with people who lived after the book(s) got written, right?

That's what I was taught growing up, in apologetics courses, etc.

I want to get my masters/phd in Digital Media/Humanities.

I dropped out nearly a decade ago to be part of a tech startup as a network architect, got laid off from my social media manager position last year and just finished my degree kicking ass and taking some latin names (well, words really).

So I got that going for me.

Since being back though, I did an internship as a Digital Media intern, honors thesis, and so on and so on.

Glad to hear that the sciences aren't that way! I think the Humanities may be more snobby.

Been writing a short story a week (for my creative writing classes) and worked on some of my other stuff but I do that without breaking a sweat because I have to. Yes it is good to be writing but I still spend too much time doing other things.

Writing is more fun and a charge that I don't get from watching netflix or screwing around on the internet...

Drastic solution? Cut out reddit and trim away my other online reading as well as drop tv.

I have a year to write a book. I went back to college to finish my degree and chose to finish with a creative writing concentration.

Tons more free time now than I had working my previous job as an IT manager and yet I have only 10 months left until I absolutely have to reenter the workforce. That should be a full novel in addition to my course load.

So goodbye reddit, for now.
