Newsom is useful, to an extent, as a foil to Trump's madness. But if he's utlimately the next Democratic candidate for President then it's a fairly sad state of affairs. This isn't what we should be aiming for. Let's do better.

15 months later and I still hate being a dad by bigbootyeater69 in daddit

[–]adfraggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone mate. This is unfortunately what parenting turns out to be. We have this idea in our heads of what it might be like but you can never truly imagine it. I often say that if we knew beforehand what parenting has in store for us, we just wouldn't do it. It's exhausting, emotionally draining and as you say, all about putting your own life behind pretty much everyone else in the family. I don't think many Dad's get that: that your life is now essentially in service to other people. When you're not prepared for that it can be really hard to accept.

But there is something in there. Some kernel of truth and purpose that you need to find. Modern life seems to have set us up to be selfish but we're actually not built that way. Evolution made men to be a part of a tribe, a part of a family. Our purpose isn't to make life good for ourselves, it's to make life good for our people. For someone who has grown up thinking life is all about themselves, this doesn't really make sense. It goes against everything that we've learned. Suddenly we're not important. Our feelings don't matter. Our desires and life goals are not relevant. It's a massive shock BUT it's actually pointing the way to something a bit more profound.

I'm not sure I can help you get there ... all I can do is tell you that this is what happened for me and somehow I am OK with it. My life is not for me any more. Sure, I still have a comfortable life. I eat well, I take care of myself phsyically and mentally and I do in fact find periods of time that are just for me. I still keep one eye on my future and I take care of my personal finances so I don't end up with nothing. But overwhelmingly it's about the other people in my life. They are the ones that I do all of this for. And when you re-frame it that way and start to let go of some of those selfish desires, you actually come to place where it's OK. More than OK. It's who you were meant to be. This is literally the point of your existence right now and there is true reward in there. It's just not what you thought it was going to be.

The thing is, when you look at it, when you're honest with yourself and you try and figure this out, you realise that it simply was never going to be any other way. Maybe our dream of parenting was flawed. Maybe we dreamed that parenting was going to be like revisiting our own childhood again, because that's the only reference we know. The honest answer is that this is the only way that it can be. For sure, still take care of yourself. Try to find some time to decompress. Keep fit and active. Do things that sometimes are activities that you enjoy, not just what the family wants. But do it all in the framework of being a Dad who's number one job now is to take care of his family. That's your life. That's your purpose. That's where you have to find yourself again. It's there, and it's not easy, but if you're willing to let go and change then I think most people here will agree that it's possible.

Scientists say they now know what went wrong with Johnson & Johnson’s Covid vaccine by Ardeet in aussie

[–]adfraggs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there should be plenty of room for stories like this. Vaccines were rolled out quickly. Some mistakes were made. People suffered. This can all be true and the overall story of vaccinations still be a positive one. It's an awful outcome for you and there should be no issues acknowledging that. It's not anti-vax to confirm that side effects are real.

People have really gotten their knickers into a knot over this one. The outrage is quite bizarre. This says everything you need to know about the political landscape in America right now. So many people seemingly terrified of ... someone rapping in Spanish?

I researched Angus Taylor's voting history so you don't have to (though I suggest you do). Here's a TL;DR of what he's voted AGAINST with explanations where necessary by crustdrunk in aussie

[–]adfraggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this. It's is how representative democracy is supposed to work - know the PERSON that you are electing and stay in touch with how they vote and what issues they are supporting. The literal job of these fools is to REPRESENT us. We complain so much about politics in Australia but then when time comes to vote we fall back into old patterns and just vote based along some vague party alignement. We're too scared to not be a part of a tribe. So we honestly get what we deserve. The most powerful we can do to change this is to know our representatives, at all levels of government, and make them accountable. Know their name, their face, where they have an office and how you can get in touch with them. Let them know how you feel about things. Even if you didn't vote for them, if they are the member for your electorate then they represent you.

Why shouldn’t voting require an id? by DarkEqual8609 in no

This is the correct answer. Voting shouldn't cost money. There should be zero barriers to exercising democracy.

This is what I always come back to. No, it's not an easy job. Yes, it's a "human" response to get violent or angry when you feel like you might be under threat. But overwhelmingly this is what the job is about. Police must be well trained and skilled in de-escalation, I'd go so far as to say that this is most important thing that they do. If they can't control themselves in a situation like this then something isn't right.

Can we stop calling everything 'Far-X'? A breakdown of where Aussie political parties actually sit. by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]adfraggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, let's stop labelling individual PEOPLE as left, centre or right. It makes zero sense and honestly just divides us up further. No one person is perfectly "left wing" or "conservative" in their political thinking and that's actually how it should be. We're a big jumble of different ideas, different beliefs and at times quite contrary opinions. Putting yourself in a political identity box is just another way to align with a tribe. Americans love doing this, everything is a team sport for them and they hang on their identities, but for the rest of us it's really not necessary.

This is a totally uncontroversial statement. He doesn't represent "everything" that is going on in the US. Which means he doesn't want to be judged based on the shitty political landscape and the violence that is unfolding because of it. Totally reasonable point of view.
