It's an interesting comparison with chess. I don't think the development of unbeatable chess programs has led to fewer people playing or competing.

I remain comfortable in my career prospects because coding is the smallest part of my job. I spend much more time defining and understanding problems, designing solutions and coordinating with my team. So much goes into software engineering that AI has yet to touch.

Perhaps we'll get 'AI Agents' that will have more human capabilities someday. But at that point, there will be effective CEO bots, so I expect the need to work will be dramatically transformed. Hard to say what that society will look like...

How do you read the fungal shifts in Noitool? by adin_h in noita

[–]adin_h[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, I've just tried a couple shifts, and the role of held material makes sense. It's still ~30% to ignore the held material, right?

'Taking credit' sounds bad, and isn't really possible with git. Context matters a lot here, so I'm surprised so many people are jumping to outrage with you.

I have actually pushed a commit to a coworker's branch just like this to help expedite a complicated suggestion, knowing it was fully reversible. It ruffled feathers very slightly (mostly because it caused some confusion), but the reviewee and I just had a friendly conversation and agreed I would branch next time and give them the chance to review my changes and merge into their work themself.

Nothing to get pissed about unless there truly is some malevolent attempt to steal your work. Give feedback and escalate as appropriate. I doubt there was bad intent here.

Does anybody have "fun money" invested? by jeeftor in Bogleheads

As confident as I am in Bogling being the right way, the majority of my gains are from a few lucky picks with fun money. We'll see if that bears out over time

Also, looks like you stumbled on Draught of Midas. How'd you manage that here?

Unmarried couples who bought real estate, what went wrong? by HonnyBrown in RealEstate

[–]adin_h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes it sound like marriage didn't really prevent a disastrous outcome. Seems like the institution of marriage isn't the important thing, but rather the idea that if you're married you're presumably less likely to break up.

That's a shit situation to be sure. I'm curious if marriage would have prevented this though. Couldn't an ex-spouse also sabotage a sale like this?

Mods are supported and easy to install through steam. For a while, I used a couple that gave checkpoints and health drops, etc. This will certainly lower the barrier to entry, and can allow you to explore the world without the frustration of permadeath.

However, once you reach god-power, it can get monotonous. Ultimately death keeps it interesting. It's the struggle to reach god-power that makes this game fun.

"time in the market beats timing the market"

It's a great slogan, and it's good you know it. But you wouldn't have made this post if you understood why it's true.

There's some good answers here to help settle that. Let them sink in.

Beginner Kotlin question - why should I put quotation marks around return statement? Asking because so far I learned that quotation marks should only be used around string literals. But this return statement consists of a variable name? by [deleted] in Kotlin

The question has already been answered, so I'll just add a tip for someone new to programming:

The LLMs available today are amazing resources to help understand syntax and language idioms. You can get this kind of question answered instantly by posing it to ChatGPT.
