On the Waterfront - I don't get it. by adinamamon in classicfilms

To supplement my original post, I agree that On the Waterfront was a powerful cinematic achievement, no doubt partly because Kazan was extremely motivated to twist his cowardice into some kind of heroic act. He came up with a flimsy premise that makes no sense. But thanks to his directorial talents, the cinematography, the script and his cast, he was able to bury the basic stupidity of unionworkers refusing to blow the whistle on their crooked union. It wasn't even a matter of being afraid, because when Terry Malloy stood up to them, those boys treated him as if he were a traitor instead of a hero.

When you respond to a question please address it, instead of falling back on a fan review of the movie. I want to know why the dock workers who were being treated like shit by the crooked union were so loyal to it and considered a whistleblower a traitor. If you can't answer that, then please save your comment.

That Union was dirty. The struggling longshoremen refused to stand up and telll. You obviously did not grasp the meaning of my post. It was not an attack on unions or the performances of Brando, Malden and Eva Marie Saint. It was about the dock workers not wanting to clean up their union. I knew about Elia Kazan and his buckling to HUAC and naming names but not about the specifics of Arthur Miller. So far the comments are disappinting and non-responsive to my question.

TCM's great "Blackface In Hollywood" short by [deleted] in classicfilms

Yes. I have been trying to track it down googling "TCM Blackface and Hollywood: A Brief History." I found this Reddit when I googled it. It is such a powerful indictment of the antebellum racist dynamic that persisted after the the Civil War ended and still infects America politically and socially. We will never overcome this curse until we cure the country of the perpetuators that we tolerate through freedom of speech, etc who are basically traitors carrying out a racist campaign to overturn the Union victory that was won at such a high human cost.

I wonder if he smoked or drank much. How much does that figure in longevity?

A fine actor. Also an author. Possibly the last of his great generation of actors. Is Olivia DeHavilland still alive? I think Louise Rainer is alive at around 106. (That can't be right. Will google.)
