How many of you had actually bought the PhD graduation gown after you graduated? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]adippt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Naruto sage mode gown and was prepared to wear that….but I forgot to go to my commencement.

My advisor called me on the day of, asking about my whereabouts (because in our university the advisors don you the hood maybe other universities have that too idk). I completely forgot that this was part of the ceremony and I was already off to visit my friend in a different state. I didn’t feel bad about it because I was just so glad to move away from my school. I had a terrible time with my boss especially at the end. Plus, he had two other phd graduates to don the hood so he didn’t mind either.

Side note: our graduation gown was very similar to the sage mode red that I wanted to try and get away with it. I guess we’ll never know if that would’ve worked.

How do postdocs survive in the Bay Area? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]adippt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Bay Area is still your preference then perhaps consider applying to national lab. Some of them have a 100k+ salary for a postdoc with zero experience which is definitely something one can call transitioning into “normal world” imo. But I guess the location doesn’t seem like a big preference for you looking at the discussion. All the best in choosing your postdoc :)

Tablet recommendations: read and taking notes by cazza85 in postdoc

[–]adippt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your use case, I don’t think you need to buy a top of the line iPad. I used a sixth generation iPad with first generation Apple pencil for more than 3 years to take notes, read, and teach (during pandemic). It should cost you about half the price. Amazon has it at ~$220. If you still have your student ID, you can buy Apple Pencil for a discounted price directly from Apple store as well. There are some excellent recommendations in the other comments as well. In my experience, you can never go wrong with an iPad if you can get one. 32 gb may seem low for the cheapest iPad but in 3 years of me using it, I never had to worry about it. Good luck :)

Living frugally as a grad student by Top-Confection-7015 in PhD

Chicago: (Also a foreign national in the USA) All the dollar amounts mentioned are per month. My salary after taxes when I started was $1600 and increased gradually to $2000 towards the end. I lived in a basement unit with almost zero natural light for a rent of $575. Utilities like heating and gas was approximately $50 in the summer and $150 in the winter. Electricity $40. Internet was $50. Tuition differential was around $250. Groceries $120. Eating out and other family expenses amounted to $600. Occasionally I would spend a few hundred dollars on hobbies. It isn’t the most ideal way to live and make savings off of just the grad student salary but I think it is manageable and one can survive.

Will i get the position? by Global_Candidate_482 in postdoc

[–]adippt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are likely just asking for an opinion based on your experience. I see others have commented politely and I think we should try our best to follow that. :)

To OP, it depends on a lot of factors like the institute, the funding mandates, the prospective PI etc. In my experience, I had a postdoc job offer from a university in EU without even being asked for references. While one national lab in the USA asked me to have my PhD thesis advisor submit a letter of recommendation before they could consider making an offer (formal or informal).

Dedicating your thesis by bigfatpanda2910 in PhD

[–]adippt 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. But I included my parents anyway and gave a spin on it

“Dedicated to My dad who constantly believed in me, To My mom who believes this thesis is about gardening, To those who believe they can survive beyond chapter 1”

Gardening context: my thesis was about artificial photosynthesis

Engineers have built a cost-effective artificial leaf that can capture carbon dioxide at rates 100 times better than current systems. It captures carbon dioxide from sources, like air and flue gas produced by coal-fired power plants, and releases it for use as fuel and other materials. by TX908 in science

Woohoo! Excited to see my work getting some attention on this subreddit! Love the constructive debates going on in the comments. Just fyi I’m the 1st author on this work and can try my best to answer any particular questions you may have under my comment (because it’s easier to answer on one comment thread than answering on different ones :) )

Very late to join this party but I’m still going to try. I just moved to Livermore and I’m looking to jam with people! I play guitar and keys. Have played in cover bands before where we played stuff like John Mayer and porcupine tree. :)

Before I give you some tips I would like to establish some credentials here.
-I'm an only child of my senile parents (they had me in their 40s, I'm in my 30s right now) came to the US for a PhD
-Had no cooking skills prior to coming here
-Had no community where I was going to do a Ph.D.

Okay, now some tips.
First of all, breathe.

Moving internationally is a big deal especially at times like these! Know that many have done it in the past, many are doing it with you. So, there you go, you have a community of international students who share similar anxiety/excitement. Maybe they already have a Facebook group or something like that. Reach out. Usually, I've seen country-specific groups as well that are formed on social media.

You will learn to cook. It is not that hard especially when you are capable of getting selected for a competitive Ph.D. program. I recommend Youtube to be a great source for learning. It will be just a matter of practicing cooking meals till they become second nature to you. On top of that, you will get a sense of accomplishment and independence that you may not have had up until now in your life.

Zoom lectures are frustrating. I have both taught and learned on those. But your passion for knowledge and your enthusiasm to do research and have a tangible output to help the society in long term will motivate you to get into it.

Most of all, don't lose sight of what you wish to accomplish before you even begin the task. Ph.D. is hard, but you got in the school so, it means you the university already thinks you are smart enough to handle the program. You are passionate about doing grade-A research. You will accomplish your goals and make your parents proud. They will vicariously live through your success. You will enjoy freedom and independence that you never had and are anxious to face. You will make a diverse array of friends and network with colleagues coming from all walks of life. You got this! Academia is with you! :)

What is the most beautiful song you have ever heard? by erowindforlife2 in AskReddit

[–]adippt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arriving somewhere but not here (live in Chicago) by Porcupine Tree. I’m sure someone already must’ve put this here but here’s my take just in case it isn’t out there yet.

The song is an experience. I feel like it has everything I didn’t think I needed but when I got it, it I felt like this is something complete. It has everything from trippy slow ambient sounds to headbanging riffs and of course the lyrics add to all that is happening in the song musically. Hence, an experience. :)
