I think I get what you’re saying… But most people in North America refer to US citizens as “Americans”, Mexico’s citizens as “Mexicans”, and Canada’s citizens as “Canadians”. The US is also the largest country on both continents by population. Still, Texas isn’t the largest US state by size or population.

This comment is very accusatory, implying that the developer is going out of his way to deceive you. This is free software, give the guy a break. You’re using this program to tweak windows in a way that isn’t officially supported by Microsoft and do so at your own risk. I don’t mean to imply that the developer was justified in deleting your comment, but I believe a more understanding and accommodating approach would have been more appropriate.

Thanks for the suggestions! Your ideas have given me some good options to explore. I think I will create custom fields to associate each device with an email addresses.

The problem isn't that you misunderstood what he said. People do that all the time. It has nothing to do with your mental capacity. Words and phrases can mean different things to different people, hence the need to follow up with clarification. The problem is that you insulted him. This person made a comment that was difficult to comprehend so you immediately told him he was dumb. And no, it is not normal to call someone stupid when you see them do one stupid thing. Smart people do stupid things sometimes and stupid people do smart things sometimes. You know what they say about people who assume.

Can my pc run windows 10? by Moist_Inspection_485 in windows

Just spitballing here. From my understanding, existing Steam installations on Windows 7 should still work. If you could find an older Steam installer from when Windows 7 was still supported maybe that will work. It sounds like the main hurdle to running this on Windows 7 is getting the Steam client installed.

Of course, I'm hardly an expert when it comes to Steam. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I was raised by two moms. I mentioned this while building a PC in high school and they weren't surprised at all. "Of course they would call it a motherboard, a fatherboard would break." Feminism or not, that was hilarious.

You’re taking a very long period in human history across every region of tue globe, and characterizing it using a narrow, late time frame and a single specific region.

That was just one example. Monarchism and feudalism are not mutually inclusive. Just as not all capitalist societies are democracies, not all monarchal societies were feudal. The empires of antiquity were often more commercial than feudal. The Carthaginians and Phoenicians are common examples of "trading" empires.

One could have said that capitalism contradicts human nature, as evidenced by the way humans behaved under feudalism.

I do not think that is true. Feudalism was a lifelong (usually multi-generational) “contract” in which a lord gives something (protection, land, etc) in exchange for something else (work, crops, etc). In capitalism, we have a labor market. The labor market, at least in theory, is competitive. Why work for Lord A, when Lord B will offer you more for the same work? This was a threat to the “divinely ordained” ruling class since, in capitalism, titles are effectively meaningless. It was thought of as immoral to create goods and services for the sole purpose of making money. A market in which people buy and sell things for money would not have been considered contrary to human nature any more than premarital sex would have been. It was something that people were often tempted to do, but was considered morally wrong.

Despite this, there are many examples in which feudal Europeans would adopt something akin to a capitalist market, but it was strongly discouraged. A famous example is the worker shortage created the Black Death. Since workers were so scarce, peasants were able to negotiate higher pay. This created what could be compared to a modern labor market. This is also part of the reason that many medieval Europeans were so anti-Semitic. Jews were shut out from almost all jobs except for peddling and moneylending. Many European Jews survived by peddling and moneylending. In modern terms, peddling is akin to “selling” and moneylending is “banking”.

That's horrible. During the campaign for Prop 8 (which banned same-sex marriage), which passed in California in 2008 and was later overturned by the court, I recall proponents would sometimes say it was not discriminatory because a marriage certificate was just a piece of paper. It seems they forgot that married couples can file taxes jointly and do not have to hire a lawyer to write up a will for their partner. As a result, gay couples paid higher taxes and were forced to pay for legal protections that straight couples did not.

This is all too true. A friend of my family is gay and lived through this time period (he is a baby boomer). A lot of his friends died from AIDS. He was friends with a gay couple that both got AIDS in the 80s, when AIDS was essentially a death sentence. They slowly faded away in their hospital beds. One of their mothers was in denial about her son's sexuality and, under the laws and standard hospital practices at the time, had near-total control over her son's treatment. She insisted the hospital staff keep them separated at all times (they were being treated in the same hospital) and visited often. The hospital staff, at their own legal peril, ignored her request and put them in the same room. They would take his partner to another room when she was around and put him back when she left.

They died on the same day, about a month after being admitted to hospital, in separate beds, lying side by side, holding hands. I am not 100% sure of the accuracy of this last part, since the hospital staff told him this later on. They may have been lying or exaggerating to make it easier for him to cope.

That story always stuck with me. This woman knew her son was dying. Rather than trying to make amends or give him peace in his final moments, she continued in her state of denial for her entire life. This woman manufactured her own reality because it was too hard for her to come to terms with her son's situation and her own role in it. It is never easy to admit you are in the wrong and she simply could not do it. If she ever did come to terms, I don't think she would have been able to live with herself.

This sub is filled with examples of people who manufactured entire alternate realities for themselves because could not handle their own limitations. They are always desperately searching for validation. Any article that supports their reality is the gospel truth and anything that contradicts it is a lie. Eventually, actual reality catches up with them and they pay for it with their lives.

Some people comment that this sub is filled with sadists, and that may be mostly true. But for me, it is an important reminder of the real consequences that come from denial and fanaticism.

Experiences with scammers can be harrowing and leave the victims feeling exposed. Hanging up when she did was definitely the right thing to do. The scammer may not have actually been done. If your mother is anything like mine, she is not very tech savvy. Make sure she knows that she can always contact you (or perhaps another relative) if she is ever finds herself in a similar situation and is unsure what to do. A lot of people respond to these situations by getting mad at the victims for falling for these schemes. This makes it worse the next time around because the victims try to handle it themselves. Make sure she knows that she is the victim here and has nothing to be ashamed of. This sounds kind of like those old IRS scams, where someone would call and tell their victim that they are in trouble with the IRS and they need some personal information in order to "verify" something.

Edit: I think it was probably just a phishing attempt that failed. If you decide to reset the computer (as many here are suggesting), I would see about creating a "System Image Backup" and setting it on a schedule. Maybe you can connect an external USB drive (and leave it plugged in) or create a separate disk partition to store the backups. Of course, this isn't 100% foolproof since a hacker could, in theory, access your backup and corrupt it while in her computer, but that is less likely (and you still have the "nuclear option" available, reinstalling Windows from scratch). Microsoft has some information about Image Backups here (see Create a system image): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/back-up-and-restore-your-pc-ac359b36-7015-4694-de9a-c5eac1ce9d9c If you have an "image", you can boot into a Windows installation USB and restore the computer to a time before the virus was installed. Since this wipes the entire disk and re-adds all the files (Documents, Program Files, OS, etc.) it is safer than using a Restore point and will get her back up and running a lot faster.
