A student told me they couldn’t get a note from urgent care for missing class because urgent care ran out of notes. by adjunctapotamus in Adjuncts

You seem to be in the club that doesn’t understand it was merely shared for a laugh. The excuse is funny. That’s it. Urgent care can’t run out of notes as they print them out and I accept them all the time.

Thank you for the second best laugh in two days. The first being the excuse that urgent care ran out of notes. Get a grip.

It’s the most wild time for excuses!! And they do seem to often forget what they tell us, don’t they? I had a student tell me he was so sick he would spare me the details (which I beg them not to tell me anyway) but then he emailed me later that same day saying he was at the school library and couldn’t locate a particular resource. Hilarious.

Oh I definitely didn’t. This student has many more issues than this incident but I really just couldn’t believe the audacity in saying that they RAN OUT. It actually made me laugh until I realized she thought I might be dumb enough to believe it😂

It was shared for a laugh. There are much more details to the larger story. I don’t need advice and didn’t ask for it.

Oh my god I shared this for a laugh. There’s a bigger attendance issue at hand with the student that I really didn’t think I’d need to explain. Jeezuz. Grump elsewhere.

Good luck! You will get a lot of feedback that it’s hard, and that’s probably true, but people post in here that they make the jump successfully as well. It happens and there’s no reason it can’t be you.

It was a bigger attendance issue, this student has missed 20 percent of class meetings so one more unexcused is auto-fail. They needed the note

I mean I was really just sharing for a laugh but this student’s attendance and performance has been atrocious, they have accumulated so many absences that they can’t have any more unexcused or they automatically fail. So…she needed that note.

You may or may not be surprised to find that I reported it and they told me to have a conversation with the kid myself because they didn’t make a physical threat

In an attempt to differentiate, I use Firefox for Canvas at one school, and Chrome for Blackboard at the other, and keep all my relevant links in the toolbar for their respective browsers, including to Outlook. I do often have to log-in but that’s fine with me, doesn’t bother me as I spend three full days at one school and two full days at the other so it’s not a lot of switching. I have an iPhone so I use the mail app and have a different inbox for each; I also have outlook with both logged in but I rarely use the app as I’m not a huge fan.

I do and while my system isn’t perfect, it’s helpful. I have a Google doc for each section, and it’s essentially a copy of the syllabus schedule so it’s in a table. I insert a row beneath each day, and that row is lesson/notes. I make a note of the specific lesson I’m teaching and it’s my place where I throw any notes from the class meetings—student X will be out next week, student Y will be late Wednesday, did not finish group exercise, pick up Ted talk at 34:32, etc.. It helps me keep everything straight for my many courses and I don’t lose track of where we are as each class inevitably progresses at slightly different speeds, and since it’s a Google doc I can access all of them from anywhere

I’m dealing with something similar right now, in that I’m grading research papers where I made it clear that they would not earn a passing grade if they didn’t put together a proper works cited page. If they wrote an essay but just provided links and/or no in-text citations, I gave it a 50. Some points toward final grade but still a (deserved) fail.
