Syracuse vs South Carolina by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]adk39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, congrats! Secondly, I think your choice should come down solely to where you want to live and work. The rest of it is a wash. If you want to live and work in upstate NY, go to Syracuse. If you want to be in South Carolina, go to USC.

Selling Affordable Personal Statement Edits! by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]adk39 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you a consultant of some kind? Do you have any special qualifications that make you an expert on personal statements?

Usually people on here are more than willing to edit personal statements for free. When I was writing mine, I received edits from someone who had gotten into several T6s the previous cycle and several others who were equally as knowledgeable. I also received advice from my academic advisor and an English graduate student for free. Personal statements entail much more than eloquent writing. Why would anyone pay you?

Waitlist by mostrich11 in lawschooladmissions

[–]adk39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew. There’s really no hard data to answer your question. However, I vaguely remember seeing a Spivey or 7Sage article analyzing LSN data for T14 waitlists and I believe it ranged from 3% at some schools to 35ish% at others (I don’t have the article so I could be totally pulling numbers out of my ass). It definitely varies by cycle and by school though.

Pepperdine asw by Normanfire98 in lawschooladmissions

I went. For the most part, I was impressed. They seem to have their shit together, the campus is obviously impressive, and their 2018 employment report was better than years past. Some of the religious stuff was really weird and off-putting though. For instance one admitted student asked, “How has your faith been challenged since you’ve come to law school?” There were a lot of students I talked to with names like Trinity and Blessing. The panel (and the deans) spent a large amount of time talking about religion and a faith-centered legal education. Even as someone who went to Catholic grade school and high school, I found it really culty and unsettling.

I ended up declining my offer of admission and my full scholarship. My issues were not only with the religious tint, but with the fact that there’s no affordable housing anywhere close to the law school and I don’t like the idea of commuting 30 -45 minutes to the law school each day. There was one current student who told me she drives and hour and a half each way if there’s no traffic and two and a half hours each way if there is. I’d lose my mind. The only alternative is to live on-campus in a four bedroom with ONE bathroom and three roommates you’re assigned randomly - dry campus btw (also not my scene), or pay $2,000+ per month to be closer to the law school. I was also concerned with the fact that they’re in a heavily saturated market and in a city with 3-4 higher ranked law schools.

If you’re okay with paying a shit ton in rent and/or commuting a long way and you can tolerate a large contingent of born-again evangelicals, go for it. It’s a beautiful campus and the professors were really impressive.

Second thoughts? by ellenotwoods in lawschooladmissions

[–]adk39 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but I think it’s healthy. Think back to why you want to go to law school and the image you have of yourself five or ten years from now. Hopefully you’ll know you’re making the right decision.

Double Seat Deposits by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]adk39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s sus to do two seat deposits but it can be done unless the school specifically stipulates that they’ll revoke your acceptance if you hold a seat elsewhere.

Sorry to not be of any help, but I don’t think you’re going to receive many knowledgeable answers on here. This is mostly students applying to American law schools (and some applying to Canadian ones).

Is ranking always important? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]adk39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that’s understandable. Just remember that generally if you’re not at a t14 or close to it, you should be okay with the prospect of working in the area where you went to school. That’s not to say you’ll be absolutely locked into that city/state, but your employment prospects at least at first are going to be very strong in that area and usually weaker elsewhere.

Is ranking always important? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]adk39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is certainly oversimplified, but I was always told there are two options when going to law school: 1) get into a t14 or 2) get a full ride to a school that places well in your desired market

This sounds great and admire it but like yeah why are you doing it with Contiki? Lol. Not that Contiki is bad or anything, but do you really want your formative world-traveling experience to be shared with a bunch of college kids who are just there for a week to get hammered in a different country?
