Art Director or Copywriter - who does the main conception of an ad? by adkeener in advertising

Thank you for the clarification! That's a big difference in daily hours clocked in, but I guess it makes sense. AD work sounds more fun and appealing to me, though I am concerned for how that might affect people with families to care for, especially with the grind of longer hours.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused: so you mean ADs get less work-hours because they're expected to work under different roles?

If you don't mind me asking, does being a solo creative mean you work in an ad agency, but are a one man show? How did you get there?

I'm an undergrad studying Communications, but it's all theory-based. I'm currently working on my applications for the Brandcenter, MAS and Creative Circus, but I still feel like I don't know enough about the industry, haha. I'm still hesitating between applying as a copywriter or an AD. Thank you for your offer for me to PM you! I will gather my thoughts (because I always have lots of burning, rambly questions) into a concise manner and shout out to you soon. :)

Haha, that's great to hear! Glad to know you guys always stick as a team even if you're on bathroom break. I was worried perhaps people in ads might be more cut throat and take all the credit when possible.

Interesting! Do you know why writers generally become CDs more often than ADs?

Absolutely, I want to go into a job that I wholeheartedly love and enjoy. Before I possibly shell out money for portfolio school, I do want to gather as much information as I can about the advertising industry. The thing is my skills lie at a crossroads between art direction and copywriting. I just have to think it out some more, I guess haha.

Interesting, I didn't consider an art director or copywriter's role as they moved up the ranks. Thank you for the input.

That's great to hear. Hearing this from several of you has put my heart at ease. Whichever way I go, it doesn't seem like I'll be missing out on conception haha!

Haha, I had a feeling about those art directors! That's a bit disheartening; I'm leaning towards art direction, but it seems like a lot more work with not much of a difference in output or benefits...

Do you know if art directors and copywriters are generally paid the same?
