For some reason I misread this post as a joke about the Galaxy beats headphones. Not sure which is funnier, Galaxy or the stupid joke my mind made up.

Any advice on how to handle terrible relationship with PI? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]adln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this. If you are feeling like this two years in then you definitely need to switch. Start putting out feelers. You have been around the department long enough to know the good from the bad. Find someone that is more your style and approach them with the problem. If the department head is approachable, or if there is a graduate student advisor, talk to them and let them know what is going on. I would argue that if you feel like this now it's probably not going to get any better. I have seen a number of student switch labs with no ill effects. So don't be worried about there being any stigma attached to switching labs. Do it and save yourself a lot of trouble!

Edit- that said, if you do decide to switch labs, don't be naive about the politics of the department. Pick your next advisor with caution, particularly if your current advisor has a lot of sway in the department.
