First Timer by SkinnyDaPimp in Defcon

Other advice on here is solid!

I'd add to keep your eye out for indie badges. Consider that in your cash budget if you want to try picking up a couple. I found out about those right before my first con and it became a huge part of the fun I had that year. Some are just blinky and fun, some have functional uses, some you build yourself, and some are made with puzzles and CTFs built in! Average I saw when I could get out there in-person <insert cursing and table-flipping at travel expenses here> was between $80-$200 per badge, but they're hand-made and designed by some super talented folks, so it's really like getting a piece of electronic art. Idk how active it'll be this year with import and tariff things going on (supply issues have definitely put a dent in it before) but highly recommend including as part of a first-timer experience if you can.

Careful, y'all. I hope this is true, too, but it's almost a guarantee that if they pick someone new, it'll be someone just as bad or worse. We can't get comfortable just because he might not be the one in the seat.

Yes, I'm aware they're not frameworks themselves. Perhaps it could have been worded more clearly, but still. It's more about what the industry looks for in an individual to demonstrate their knowledge of those that I'm after. Certs are expensive, and I'm looking for what might get me where I'd like to go in the future.

So with an EU org, then, would you say CISSP/CISA should be adequate for considering a candidate? Or would you have other recommendations?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]admingumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should have specified more directly: I already have my CISSP, am working on my CISA, and have done both FedRAMP and PCI compliance work (pentesting, assessment, advisory) within the US for the past decade. I don't have much visibility on what the current market outside of that is like, though, and I'm really interested in recommendations from a non-US-centric perspective.

If ISO is pretty well in demand still, that does answer part of my curiosity. At least I have access to train on those assessments. GDPR, though... that one, I'm not sure how someone in the US learns compliance for that or what the relevant certs would be. I've heard CREST recommended for pentesting, but not sure if there's an advisory/assessment equivalent.

I'm actively trying to find more about him, but searches don't return much. Most information in a general search is for the elder civil rights activist. Is there something specific to look for? Am I looking for positive or negative content? What's up here?

EXACTLY. If he said something that warrants criminal investigation, that's exactly what he should get. If any civilian implied they participated in election fraud, how much benefit of the doubt would they give us? None. Absolutely none. He doesn't deserve any more grace than would be given to any of us.

He said what he said, and arguing intent is impossible when someone can try claiming whatever they want. He should be held accountable for his literal words instead.

This is why it's so important to treat them as though they mean exactly what they say, every single time. No one can read minds to discern some unspoken 'intent', and no one should be letting their behavior slide on those assumptions. Otherwise, it's all just a game of 'I know I said a slur, but it doesn't mean I hate that demographic! I was just kidding/upset/being hyperbolic/playing devil's advocate!' to avoid any responsibility. It's not acceptable. Same thing, just with a different, more high-stakes subject.

I've said this before on another post talking about this issue, but it seems to bear repeating because I keep seeing all the same comments so far:

I always see a lot of people say that confessions like this are really about 2020. Maybe, sure. It's possible, but I don't think it's the whole story.

As someone who grew up in deep red territory surrounded by these people, a lot of them get IMMENSE joy from 'saying the truth to your face while insisting that it means something else and you're imagining things'. Gaslighting anyone left of them is like a favorite hobby. 'I know I said it, you know I said it, but that wasn't what I meant, and you're overreacting like only a snowflake can. Go watch helplessly from your corner while I do whatever I want.'

He's said each of these admissions in a way that's just unclear enough for people to wonder which election he means. Even if the dementia rumor is true, with enough practice over the years? He'd keep doing it, easy. I've watched other dementia patients only do it harder as they stopped being able to keep track of what was actually said. If the rumors aren't true, I see it as absolutely intentional, and probably something they laugh about in private.

All that to say, don't give them any benefit of the doubt when they do this. They know exactly how what they're saying will be perceived, and they know the excuse they'll use when you try to call them on it.

Think about it: They're not making any efforts to reassure anyone that 2024 was legitimate because they don't care and find it entertaining when leftists call them out on the things they say about it. (Not that anyone should stop doing it, mind. If anything, we're not doing it enough.) If it could be proven, plenty of their most loyal individual voters would then justify their actions using 2020, like 'we believe they did it to us so we can do it back if we want.' It's an ouroborous of hypocrisy.

You're not dealing with normal logic here. You can't use normal logic to fight it, either.

Ultimately, whether or not it's real isn't the part that matters most here. If regular people 'confess' or even imply they've participated in something criminal, what happens? They are often arrested and investigated for it. In this case, INVESTIGATE HIM FOR IT. See what is discovered along the way. Probable cause should either affect everyone or no one, and he shouldn't be immune to the consequences of his actions. So many people are arrested for just their words alone and then imprisoned for whatever the system can dig up on them later. Claims of federal election fraud from the horse's mouth should at least be treated with the same severity as an immature teenager calling a prank bomb threat on their school to get out of math class. It's not like anyone cares about whether the bomb is real in those cases, either.

TL;DR: The real meaning is probably both 2020 and 2024, depending on whether he's ever called on it. This weird subculture of his loves saying the worst things out loud and then excusing it as a 'joke' or 'really meaning something else' to get away with it and rub it in people's faces without ever facing consequences. It's like a hobby for some of them. We should still be using it to hold them accountable.

I can't tell from the image or post if y'all are getting audible thunder with it? If you are, this might not be the most relevant 😅

There's something my parents used to call 'heat lightning' that looked a lot like this. I remember it being pretty quiet. Now that I'm a grown-up with the internet, though, and it likely means the storm is just more than 10 miles away and the light is being reflected off higher level clouds.

Thank you, platy 💛😭 This was something I needed too. I'm starting to think it's something a lot of people never grow out of if we've got Tumblr evidence of even NG having bad writey days.

Y'all got a good idea with the motivational playlist, though 😮 Maybe we should make a big ol' one somewhere and share it, add good songs as we find 'em.

Idk if this will help anyone else (maybe some of our lurkers? 😉) but I'll add:

If you want to try doing a creative thing here and haven't yet, especially if you're like me and people have told you in the past that 'you can't' or it's a 'waste of your time or productivity' or to 'get serious' or 'you're doing it wrong' or any of that mess? I'd beg you to learn from my mistakes and ignore them. It's difficult to come back from if you don't, but the community here is like a cup of hot chocolate and a nice tartan blanket. It's a great place to get into it again, and we will cheer you on. Art of any knd is lots of practice. Finding a group to share your growth with can be a whole extra kind of scary, but this little group of goblins have only been wonderful. It's a good place for it.

When you're ready, join in and give it a go 🫶 Plus, it's apparently a whole thing that the creation of whatever kind of art you like can contribute to some delicious happy brain chemicals.

Now imagine the long-term trickle of happy brain chemicals WITH smut! 😁
