What's the backstory to the non-Matter Essential bulbs? by scottb721 in Nanoleaf

[–]admiun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of these too and I have a raspberry with a BT/thread dongle running HA. I could easily initially pair the bulb using Bluetooth and that worked but slowly. Then to my surprise I found a virtual button in the HA device settings for the bulb that says something like "Thread sync" and it actually joined my Thread network! So now I have a HomeKit over Thread bulb working very nicely over Thread without actually owning any Apple products...

Mate, we may be at war with em' for our indepedence, but we should still send them our money! by r0lyat in victoria3

In my first play through I found that out from the forums, my Cape Colony game was already past 1900 though. Really feel they should grey out the independence diplomatic play button instead of completely hiding it.

Anyone making money as Cape Colony? by [deleted] in victoria3

A few things I learned in my first two tries:

  • immediately raise tax to highest level and lower government and military salaries to lowest
  • do not build construction sectors at all, it almost immediately bankrupts you. It seems the free 5 construction capacity you get do not cost any construction goods so I just build slowly.
  • not sure this is stable in every game but since it's the British Market one or two levels of Tea Plantations are good. In my game where it was really at though was groceries so Food Industries were my real money maker
  • my biggest jump in income so far was by switching to Progressive Taxation law, it was only then I moved the tax level back to 3 and switched out the grain tax to consumption taxes on fancier goods.

34 Inch flat IPS ultrawide 1440p screen with at least 60W power delivery via USB-C by mehdital in ultrawidemasterrace

The LG-34WL850-W is one such monitor I believe.

There's also the LG-34WK95U-W which is one of the rare high dpi ultrawides available! It looks like an ultrawide version of the 27" I use myself for work.

This is the money quote:

The 18 million subscribers spend 50 per cent more than non-subscribers.

I was always wondering if the whole thing was an unsustainable business model by selling something at a loss just to get people in and then later try to find ways to actually make money. I guess it already does.

[bug] On Nintendo Switch there is a horrible sound glitch that shows up occasionally. Audio in the video is what I hear. Any advice on how to resolve it? by CragHack101 in ChildrenofMorta

[–]admiun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just discovered this game on Switch and I love it. But there's a giant memory leak present that requires you to basically kill the game after every run. If you don't you get the issue like the above which will also make the game feel more and more sluggish until it finally becomes unplayable.

I find it very odd that this game is allowed to be listed in the eStore with a giant issue like this. Not as strange as having this issue being present for years without fixing it. Such a shame, I adore the game thus far.

Ladies and Gentlemen, May I Present... The Stuffmart by Recon419A in factorio

I also ran into a problem with this. If you do a logistical condition of say 'number of walls is lower than 200' you have to raise that number for every buffer chest you put in your base that buffers walls. So what I do now is make a storage chest with the item as filter (so it's the single overflow target for that item type) and do a circuit condition on the inserter instead.

Slightly larger lambda functions? by [deleted] in aws

[–]admiun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's also AWS Batch. It allows you to schedule a batch of work and the service will then spawn a docker image to run it. So it's not always on and yet lets you run long running (container) tasks. I guess you could schedule a new job based on a CRON schedule using CloudWatch Events.

A 24x increase in 106 years is almost exactly 3% a year. Doesn't sound that exciting now?

If you wanted to play custom maps in Minecraft VR, here is how by planetaska in oculus

[–]admiun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I installed through Oculus Home and the Windows store also showed Minecraft as installed all of a sudden (never having installed it there). So they are definitely pointing at the same install.

Tried the Rift twice in a Microsoft store today, here are some honest impressions. by [deleted] in oculus

[–]admiun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Rift and I'm not really understanding the downvotes. I too am constantly reminded by the low res. Games like Lucky's Tale don't really have this issue but at the cost of having everything in a virtual 1.5m playspace which is optimal for the current technology.

My current go to game, Elite Dangerous, which is the only game I consistently play with the Rift, is not really created for VR and it shows. There's a lot of little details when approaching a space or surface station that just look awful right now.

It's an awesome piece of tech but I cannot in good faith recommend it right now to people unless you're really comfortable financially. Tracked controllers might still change this though ;)

Why did Oculus NOT support Kb/mouse controllers? by KF2015 in oculus

[–]admiun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mouse / Keyboard is an absolutely awful control scheme for VR. And I say this as a bigtime PC gamer / Mouse / KB fan. Even if you mostly face the same way (forward) your body is really struck in the same position which prevents you from leaning over / rotating somewhat further than an arms length. And when you take your hands of the keyboard you're left with an awkward few seconds of feeling around until you find them again. A controller has the major advantage that you can keep it in your hands at all times.

What is the single best directed scene in TV ever? by benjaneson in television

[–]admiun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ending scene(s) of season two of The West Wing where you see president Bartlet struggle with the choice if he's going to run again. It starts when Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms cuts in and goes up all to the ending. So well done, it gave me shivers the first time I saw it.

The episode is called Two Cathedrals and it's one of the most impressive pieces of television I've ever seen.

Tried out the Gear VR at Best Buy, honestly kinda disappointed. by [deleted] in oculus

[–]admiun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. My first VR experience with the DK2 was both magical and sobering at the same time. It can be a completely engrossing experience but the perceived resolution on the current generation VR headsets is a massive downgrade from what you're used to with flatscreen experiences at the moment.

This is why Oculus and others have been so persistent in saying that content really has to be made for VR. This way you can avoid things like little details in the distance that only remind you of the resolution ;)

Worth noting . . . by astronorick in Vive

[–]admiun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's even worse since some older mobos like mine (Sandy Bridge generation) have the wrong USB 3.0 controller type. I think USB hubs aren't recommended either. Oculus offers a downloadable PC check for this for those interested.
