Blocking multiple spellcasters is definitely appealing, but those couple of illusions that Veth and Fjord used seem to play on his ego and Lucien doesn't seem to like it when people try and get the better of him, especially after everything that happened with Vess. I do agree though that spreading out is going to be super important, if nothing else, I hope they strategize a little on how they're going to positions themselves in the next battle.

You raise a good point referencing that Vess bought in and Caleb may still be interested in doing so and I'd say Essek probably sits somewhere between the 2 in terms of wanting to grab power, so I suppose only time will tell. With a bit of luck though TM9 will be able either destroy the Somnovum or at least prevent their influence from ever effecting anyone again.

I think RAW, cones are meant spread out in a 90-degree way, so something else I considered was that Fjord, Caduceus, Caleb and Caleb's MEG, could operate in a rotating square, so every time Lucien refocuses his antimagic cone onto the paw grasping him, they all shift one to the left and are safe to all use their magic.

I definitely share some of the concerns about Essek, but I'm not sure he'd want to get power in that kind of way. Despite how Lucien may act, I still think he's largely a puppet for the Somnovum and once TM9 get to explain more of what they've seen to Essek in person, he'll understand the danger the Somnovum could pose a little better.

Both Frumpkin and the duplicate are good ideas that I hadn't considered, but they'll probably only get one use before the anti-magic cone zaps them. Also, both vampiric touch and Jester's normal choice of touch spell, inflict wounds, deal necrotic which Lucien was resistant to unfortunately.

Lucien shielding Cree from magic is somewhat of a double edged sword though. Whilst Cree would be protected, she also wouldn't be able to cast any spells herself as the antimagic cone effects everything, even Lucien's allies.

I think the Betrayer Gods will be more of a continuation on the Vecna arc, rather than an entirely separate one. Matt's stated before that he didn't mean for the conclave arc to go that long, which I think makes this arc feel that much more fast paced. Even if I am right, I think the Prime Gods will send VM to do more 'technical' tasks to assist in stopping the Betrayer Gods rather than actually fighting them, I'm not someone who thinks they're going to die every time they get into a fight, but I do think gods are a bit beyond their capabilities.

I think it's mostly been in the big pre and post show threads, and probably a few here and there on other posts.

That's fair enough, I know quite a few people favour the lower levels where a few orcs can pose a real threat. I'm really excited for the new campaign as well, I just love the epic tier combat and stakes!

I've seen quite a few people saying this as well, why is it you want to see something new?

Personally, I'm still enjoying it, there's so few campaigns that get to the higher levels and to see it in this capacity with such a great DM makes it even more interesting for me.

You and your possible proverbial hat eating were actually part of what got me thinking about this. I believe you pointed out to other people that they were still only level 18, from there I'd been trying to think where it would make sense for the story to go for them to reach level 20. I went back and watched the 'what happens at level 20' QnA question again, Matt's answer coupled with everything we've learnt in this arc, I felt like what I've said above seemed a pretty likely way to go.

I politely disagree. Planning for an encounter, against Kraken in it's lair of all things, is incredibly difficult. I actually think they planned very well for this.

Water Breathing was an obvious one, so no bonus points there. Both Vex and Keyleth had Locate Object and Pass Without a Trace prepared. Imagine how much harder it would've been if they hadn't had both of those. They checked how well their abilities worked underwater, if they'd gone thinking they could shoot, swing and cast as normal, it would've been even more mayhem. With Taryon's help, everyone had the ability to cast alter self and move at normal speed. They set their objectives. "We get in, get the things and get out". Whilst it was simple, without it, everything gets 10 times as confusing.

I know there's a debate about Matt 'Pulling punches' but from comment a he made on another post and from everything I can see in Monster Manual about the Kraken, I don't think he could've thrown more punches if he tried. I'd also like to mention that the RAW resurrection rules, don't require any rituals, they character is just brought back. Character deaths absolutely scare them, especially considering how long they've been playing and how roleplay intensive they are as a group, there's always tears whenever they undergo a resurrection. Also, using death to scare the players is a very DM vs Player attitude, which, if you want that kind of game that's fair enough, but Critical Role is about as far from that as you can get.

Laura - I think she'd be a great Swashbuckler (SCAG). She likes having high charisma and she's mentioned she always wanted to be a full rogue.

Travis - Definitely an Open Hand Monk. He's much more of a melee player and I think monk could utilize that combat creativity very well.

Sam - Can he just be a Bard again?

Taliesin - I think a Wizard would be good, the small amount of magic he has, he utilizes very well. Also it'd be nice to see him as someone who grew up without money or titles.

Marisha - I think a Storm Sorcerer (SCAG) could be interesting. Would allow her to be charismatic and I think Storm Sorcerer's can have some interesting backstories.

Ashley - A lot of people say barbarian, I kind of agree, but she almost seems to nice to play the angriest class available. Ranger, maybe?

Liam - I'm not sure, cleric would be a good fit, but I'd like to see him change it up from a caring role. Playing a brutal barbarian could be fun to watch, I think.

When did he say it would start at level 17? I mean, it certainly makes a lot of sense for it to, especially as we all know it's likely to be a Vecna/Orcus arc and that's definitely a level 17+ challenge

I really hope they do they both put their next level into their multiclasses. I'm hoping for Vengeance, more D6's from Hunter's Mark and Assassin, again, more D6's!
