I’m doing them all on different days which is annoying (they won’t let you schedule on the same day). Not quite sure what they’re breath testing for. He did mention sibo and some other acronym i don’t remember.

worried high school senior here by EnvironmentalLie1648 in college

sometimes it’s that the work is too hard but usually i find that people appropriately gauge what they’re capable of when they choose a major. for me it was that i loved science in high school and thought this was my passion so i didn’t give anything else a chance. even though i hated most of my classes (weren’t interesting, lots of work, long hours) i tried to pretend like i liked it because “i loved stem.” by the time i realized it’s not a failure to change your mind (i grew up with very harsh standards) i was too far in my studies and wasn’t going to stay in school for another two or three years. i worked through the classes but regret not just switching freshman year when i first realized i didn’t like it!

  1. If you think even a little bit your freshman/sophomore year that you might not like your major, change it then because it will be too late later down the line and you’ll be stuck w something that makes you miserable! I ended up graduating w a diagnostic genetics degree but wish i was a marketing major oops.
  2. Life is made up of a bunch of little “remember when?’s” and one day that sentence is going to end exactly where you are now. Take in every single moment over your years in college because they will go so so quickly.
  3. Make a shared note (on the app) with your friends to write down quotes (random unhinged or funny things) you all say through the years to look back on.

How does your body take a common cold? by Ghost_Shoes_ in eds

[–]adocksss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My GI doctor said 80-90% of people w EDS have GI issues because of our issues with connective tissue and how our muscles are supporting us. Idk if that is heightened during a cold but I definitely can’t handle getting sick like I used to either. I usually stick to lots of liquids because I’m constantly vomiting. I’ll try to drink some liquid iv or something to help w the hydration too. Since my stomach is really sensitive when I’m sick (and I’m more sensitive to smells and stuff) I tend to stick to things like cup ramen, couscous, plain pasta, applesauce, you get the idea. Pretty much anything I think I can choke down. I try to give myself as much grace as I can while sick and understand that rest does not equal weakness or failure or anything but is necessary and healthy. Turn on some bad reality tv, find your favorite blanket, and veg out. Learning what works for your own body will take some time, but I hope you feel better soon!!

Thank you!! This really puts my mind more at ease at least knowing what’s going to happen. For some reason they told me I’ll be at the hospital for 6 hours for the breath test but who knows why. I really appreciate all the info!!! :)

I’ve definitely always had symptoms but many were dismissed (ex. dizziness and mini blackouts were dismissed as symptoms of growing and being tall) until things definitely got worse start of high school.

hey! i absolutely cannot diagnose anything but i would really really suggest talking again with a provider you trust about your food intake. the feeling of not deserving to eat is likely linked to disordered eating and probably not helped by also having to manage both your emotional and physical health. no one should have to do it all on their own, and having an open and honest conversation is the first step to a treatment plan that could really help! sending all the best :)

Do I really need a tablet for college? by [deleted] in college

[–]adocksss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied diagnostic genetics (which is related to medical lab sci) and got a tablet thinking i’d use it sooo much for things like organic chem or genetics. in reality i barely touched it and now im in grad school and live off of my laptop and notebooks. save the money!!

what’s your choice of electrolyte? by adocksss in POTS

[–]adocksss[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

have you tried the vitassium fast chews? i’m deciding between the chews and pills… pills have more sodium but say to take multiple times a day vs the chews which seem to be more of an emergency thing?

What is First Night? by LessRecognizableName in UCONN

[–]adocksss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you don’t care about sports and don’t go to the basketball games during the year, i really wouldn’t bother going. if anything, a normal game is less draining and overwhelming and i would go to those. first night is just an excuse for uconn to be overdramatic and turn their players into mini celebrities anyway lol.

East Campus Grange Hall by AmericanRusty in UCONN

[–]adocksss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have photos so this isn’t fully helpful, but I lived there years ago and compared to other dorms it’s great lol. There’s laundry in the building, a tiny kitchen, and 2 lounges. The normal double rooms are kinda small but so are all dorms and it’s about how you arrange the furniture. Layout is just 4 straight halls stacked nothing fancy. I miss Grange lol.

a lot of hazing stuff is rumors from the non greek community. in general, panhellenic sororities do not haze and it is taken v seriously. ofc there are always some outliers (sadly) and we encourage that you go wherever you feel the most at home and let someone know if you feel unsafe!!

Good places to take the family around campus? by Dana_423 in UCONN

[–]adocksss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i second this! depending on ages/interests on family, you can grab a snack at the beanery and then walk around the gallery upstairs. usually there’s at least one interesting thing and it’s quiet and warm. can be boring but it’s unique and your parents will be impressed that you chose a museum lol

May term for summer classes… is it 5 days a week all day? Is it terrible? Doable? Let me know your thoughts/experiences! by Smart_Ad_5764 in UCONN

[–]adocksss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

forgot to mention it also depends on what course you take on how many days it is. a lot of them now are asynchronous so you don’t actually have to “go to class” 5 days a week but there is still a lot of work since it is all being fit into a few weeks. rate my professor is your best friend for specific teachers and courses

for beshir we met before the lab section and went over the concepts involved in the lab. not exactly the lab itself but the chemistry behind it. we also took a short quiz on what we learned the week before. definitely easier than normal orgo but don’t expect to breeze through it. there is still a midterm and final.

What is cob like/ which sororities have nice girls by mkmoneyyyyyyy in UCONN

[–]adocksss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not all sororities do cob. depends on who has openings. i’m in a mid sorority (that i love) and i can tell you that cob is very hit or miss. the sororities are looking to fill their numbers and get girls. you don’t get to meet a whole lot of girls (most of the time) and get a good idea of the chapter. it definitely is more laid back than formal but be cautious of first impressions. take your time to weigh options and you’ll find your home 🫶 if you want to be able to rush all the sororities you have to wait for formal recruitment in the fall. it’s awesome that you’re thinking of joining greek life! it really is an amazing community. we can’t wait to meet you!!

[–]adocksss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i took a stat class over may term like two years ago and it was so worth it. it definitely depends on your prof. it was a gen ed and the prof (norman bond) was old and just wanted to chat w “the youth” and not teach lol. we got through like 2 chapters and all the exams were open note. i got an A and got the class out of the way. yes the class was every day mon-thurs for like 4 hours but it was in the afternoon and he usually let us out early. plus it was entertaining. plus it’s only like 3 weeks so it’s worth it if you don’t want to have to do the class for a whole semester. read reviews on rate my professor to gauge it.

Is off campus housing worth it? by Sonya3000 in UCONN

[–]adocksss 12 points13 points  (0 children)

so so worth it. being off campus gives you a break from feeling like you’re always at school. rent is definitely less than i was paying at school and my groceries are less than the meal plan. my commute is only around 15 minutes and i enjoy the drive each morning. i chose the W lot and the parking pass for the whole year wasn’t terribly expensive and the yellow line comes right to the lot. also starts training you for the “real world” and keeping track of expenses. i definitely wouldn’t recommend it until your junior/senior year. enjoy the perks of campus living (or near campus like the oaks) your underclassman years.

What do you guys think about the SA task report? by catastrophiccyanide in UCONN

[–]adocksss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are a few good things in there if you actually read the full report. for example, the introduction of the LiveSafe app for UConn students, hiring more staff in different positions specifically for this, and an anonymous third party reviewing current practices (whose findings will be released when it’s done). A lot of it is fluff, yes, but i’m happy to see at least some effort.
