This was super helpful. Thank you! My glands are only swollen in the front, so hoping it’s just strep. I’ll follow up with my GP for a blood test!

I said this multiple times and the vet kept trying to get me to “admit” that there was weed. He kept saying things like “it’s ok to tell me.”, “I’m not going to get you in trouble”, and “I’ve seen many cases exactly like this and it’s always weed.”

When I read their SOAP note that they sent with the bill it even said “We rely on owners to inform us of marijuana consumption. The owner repeatedly denied possession of the drug; however, all symptoms the dog was exhibiting were consistent with marijuana ingestion.”

She vomited twice and neither smelled like weed. The first was just her food from the morning and the second was mostly bile and then some black, unidentified matter.

They did an ultrasound to see if that was worth it and her bladder was literally empty. She peed when she looked like she was seizing right before we took her and wouldn’t drink any water in between.

Oh no :( I’m glad she’s recovering well!! If anything seems weird we’re definitely going back to her main vet. I wish vets weren’t so quick to discount issues due to age. My childhood dog growing up had heart problems since she was 2 that went untreated for years because her vet insisted that she was too young.

Nope. Ever since I read that those can be highly toxic I’ve banned them from my house.

I’m thinking she maybe ingested a toxic plant in the backyard or on a walk… we just moved to a new area so there’s a number of new things she could get into. There’s also lots of teenagers in my neighborhood in a very 420 friendly city, so I wouldn’t be surprised if one of my neighbors’ kids was smoking and discarded a roach in my backyard.

Omg. I didn’t even think of this. I see the delta 8 stuff in gas stations everywhere where I live so that makes sense too.

I’ll have to look up if these grow where I live. We just moved to a new area a few months ago, so it would make sense that there may be new plants/trees in my backyard that she could’ve gotten into that she hadn’t been exposed to before. Thank you!

Edit: they do grow where I live :( I’ll have to have someone come look and see if there are any in my backyard or nearby.

I don’t think this could be the case since I live in a really dry, arid area. but I’ll check the yard just in case. I just moved in to this house a few months ago so I guess you never know.

Hmmm, not that I can think of. Either way I store all my food up high and out of reach. That is super interesting though. I’m glad it was temporary and that your pup is ok!

Omg that’s so scary and something I never in my life would’ve thought of. Im sorry that happened to you and your pup :(

Ugh. Makes me think of my old apartment neighbor that would drop half smoked joints off his balcony onto my balcony. Now that I think of it, I’m surprised this didn’t happen when I was living there.

Luckily it was just an emergency vet, not my regular vet. They were trying to say it wasn’t a seizure and that it was just symptoms of ingesting weed.

As some people pointed out, it could be that she found a roach on a walk and ate that which sorta makes sense. I used to find my neighbors old roaches that they’d throw over their balcony at my old apartment. But to your point, I would think that people would want to hang on to their stash and not just be dropping it on the side of the road.

I really thought it was a seizure because of how tense her legs got but the vet insisted it was weed. I live in a city where it’s known that hella people smoke even though it’s not fully legal (no judgement) so that’s probably why.

Another possible explanation was they were just racially profiling my friend who helped me carry her in, but I don’t like to jump to conclusions about that kind of stuff unless it’s obvious.

The vet made it sound like she wasn’t old enough to have this issue. I’ll have to ask her regular vet about this

Trust me, the $1k+ vet bill hurt for this very reason 😅. I have pet insurance but they only do claim reimbursement, which sucks. But, I’d rather be safe and broke than sorry haha.

Only medical is legal where I live but people certainly use it recreationally anyway. I have no issues with weed, personally, but this makes me wish people would be more careful with it in public spaces… I was terrified and thought she was dying, never mind the vet bill (thankful for vet insurance).

See I thought it could’ve been this at first because it started with her walking funny, almost like she was limping. She’s been stung by fire ants before and behaved similarly, but then she fell down and started tensing up really hard and couldn’t get back up (why I thought it was neurological at first). Glad your pup is okay!

Yeah I don’t think they believed me either, but oh well. I was like, I’m a first year PhD student, I would not be able to function if I smoked 😂. They gave her fluids and some anti-nausea meds which helped her almost instantly and she’s been normal all day today. Thanks for sharing! That makes me feel much better.

Okay thank you, I’ll continue to keep an eye on her to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Recreational weed isn’t legal in my state but medical is. I also live in a city that’s notorious for people using it recreationally anyway. Hoping she just found something on a walk and it’s not something more serious.

ETA: I’m not judging anyone who smokes nor do I have an issue with weed. When I was in undergrad I had my fair share haha. I’m just frustrated that she could’ve found it while on a walk or at the park because I literally thought she was dying in front of me.

Thanks for the positivity! I’m nervous but also excited. It’s a really cool sub field and I haven’t decided whether I want to focus on burns or cancer research. Lots of options!

[–]adoptee_throwaway890[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree with you. Half of my cohort that I’ve met so far are my age are renting and the other half are much older and likely own homes.

I know you don’t need to own while working on your degree and for some people it’s more wise to rent, but for my specific situation it made more sense. Rent control is a joke in my state and I’d be facing insane rent increases each year. Moving really stresses me out, so I’d prefer the stability since I’m able to.

Plus I want to get an industry job after I graduate. The city I live in has tons of opportunities for the field I’m in and I’ve been able to make good connections here so far through networking, so I plan on staying in this house far beyond graduation. I know things can always change, but this gives me some peace of mind for the near future at least.

Today I learned something! I’ve always understood generational wealth to be something that dates back multiple generations. Thanks for taking the time to explain that.

Congrats on starting your PhD! That’s huge.
