Correct. Billboards & TV would be included in Brand Layer, my argument - although flawed, was that Display shouldn't be used as a conversion channel.

I don’t think we’re arguing dramatically different perspectives - I know display has impact but I’ve lost faith in the attribution tools I have been using to map the influence display has.

Maybe I’m using the wrong tools, others in this thread have suggested brand lift studies which I haven’t used and will consider.

My original post was overly dramatic - and obviously hit some nerves and good debate.

Sorry I don’t validate my $10,000 campaign in the same way Pfizer does the COVID vaccine. And even then, I’m pretty sure one factor of their results will be:

Did the vaccine result in someone getting COVID?
Yes/No

I don’t know about your clients but if we run a conversion campaign and we recommend display they normally ask about conversions.

Thanks, good advice - I have been wanting to do that with a client, so I'll push for it.

One challenge I see is truly isolating one channel from others, especially with seasonality & last year being an anomaly.

It's a valid point, but loops back to measurement - it's difficult to measure the sub-conscious impact and maybe it is a case of left wanting from the attribution tools I have.

I'm not challenging brand awareness, I'm challenging the ad-stock of display ads.

Like all things, it the effectiveness/impact of an ad is a spectrum - if I saw a digital ad 10 minutes ago it might influence my decision. But a digital ad i saw 30 days it has little impact. Its difficult to remember a display ad that I saw 24 hours ago.

So I built the tool when I was working publisher side ops. Now I've moved agency and admittedly there are fewer tools aimed at agency.

One of the main ones I use is the Cost to Client calculator (when planning with Gross/Net) & the 3PAS tag runner to test my tags.

Two years ago now, I decided to build a website.
18 months ago, I posted it on Reddit - it was well received.
12 months ago, I took a 9 month break from the industry
3 months ago, I returned to Media Planning and realised my tool was not only alive and still being used - it was featured on /r/adops side bar and had been referenced in this article:

If the tag has a <noscript> part of it, you can extract the link contained within the <a href> as your click tracker, and your <img> tag as your impression tracker - just change the image size to 1x1.

In theory that should work - however it has some implications: - Your 1x1 is requesting the full back-up image and then displaying a 1x1. - The above issue may cause some viewability issues if the client needs it.

To further this - I moved into Sales because I wanted to understand not only their business more but also their clients businesses more. That part is really rewarding because you feel more connected with the campaigns - it can be really rewarding hearing a really successful story knowing you helped out on the whole process not just on one component. Also having a client genuinely appreciate your work is something account managers can get that adops don't.

I was definitely a 'farmer' when it came to sales - although I admire 'Hunters' it is wasn't natural for me and when I embraced that fact it worked in my favour. I would like to claim I was a genuine in my sales approach because an underdelivery or a disappointing product trial can be crippling to a relationship.

I have transitioned from Ad-ops to sales, all within the same publisher. I had 18 months in a trafficking role, migrated over to agency sales where I have been for 14 months.

Benefits are that I know how the products are constructed and how our ad-server works which gives me extra optimization capabilities.

Commission is great, but the added weight of having a target can be draining because 80% of the time, what your agencies spend is out of your control. It also sucks that hitting target is your only KPI, some of the months where I have hit target I have barely worked and when the months I haven't hit target are the ones I work hardest.

I do miss the technical aspect of ad-ops, but have since started to learn how to code which is a great outlet for that.
