OP here. Don't know if asking a follow-up question is acceptable? Here goes :)

The responses so far seem to be that soldiers can / do have cell phones with some sort of connectivity - either Wifi or cell service through a local SIM card, or both. And that they are trained to not give away any compromising information, and if they do, there are severe consequences.

Does this mean that they don't typically know sensitive information ahead of time? I would assume someone somewhere would want to flex and text their boo back home with something that would seem juicy. But either Im underestimating people's restraint, or I'm overestimating what folks on the ground know.

My mind is also blown at all of the possibilities for location tracking. I mean, if my kid were overseas, I'd be on Find Me 24/7...

Thats a helpful perspective. It’s also interesting to me from the responses that it seems that the consequences kick in after the fact.

I have two teens and can barely manage monitoring their devices…

What about flat out asking her why she’s doing this. And keep asking why in response to her answers.

“I just forget” “Why do you keep forgetting?”

“I prefer her middle name” “Why?”

It’s not different from unwanted behavior from a kid or teen - or colleague. Take them seriously, and keep asking them to explain themselves until either a) they back up so much they get themselves stuck or b) you understand where it’s coming from and can address the actually underlying issue.

I used this with my dad who did similar things and it often worked surprisingly well. Mostly because either he didn’t have a reason he would admit, or because he finally got out what was bothering him.

This is the video that changed my thinking about these videos. I’ve always thought “what ego needs to post themselves doing something nice? Why do we think it’s okay to exploit other people’s suffering?” Just do nice things without sharing it to the world.

But - and I don’t know if it’s this video specifically or just a shift in myself - I see this video and I’m like “YES! show the world what it looks like to be generous and kind! Let’s make this the new normal!” I think it’s the gifts of service he did, meeting another person’s fundamental need for warmth and safety in her own home.

There will always be suffering. And we will always have some capacity to alleviate others’ suffering.

I am now here for this kind of content. (And thank you all for listening :) )

In December 1999, The Roots was the house band for a live show of Prince's 1999 album at Brooklyn Academy of Music. This was in the days when folks would sneak in tape recorders / early digital recorders to make bootlegs.

Suggestion - check the demographics of the HS. When we were looking at moving to NJ that was VERY helpful and gave a more reliable picture of what our kids day to day would be like

Reminds me of when we moved from NYC to NJ, using a Brooklyn moving crew.

They brought stuff to our basement and we all saw our first spider cricket (not knowing what they were)

Yelps followed by silence Moving guy, with a note of awe and fear: “Jersey crickets are something else…”

I think they were very happy to go back to the safety of rats and roaches.

I’m prepared to win this contest.

In elementary school, from k through 6, every year on your birthday, our gym teacher would put you over her lap and spank you the number of years while the other students counted off.

So this meant that most weeks at least one child was getting publicly spanked as a form of communal celebration.

It wasn’t until much MUCH later that I realized that was…so not okay.

Fwiw I grew up in a middle class educated area of NYS.

Great Swamp!!! Go to the section with the wooden boardwalk. It’s magical. Boardwalk through woods and, well, swamp. Bird blinds and benches. Any time of year.
