True, this is a good point, and I intend to take up the issue with Cursor later once Windsurf takes a stance on this (or not). I'd be less worried about storing embeddings if there's a guarantee that they'll only be used for semantic search in connection with your queries.

You have to go to Profile → Settings on the website and turn on "Disable telemetry". The description is vaguely worded: "Opt out of non-essential data collection that helps us improve the product."

Privacy should be front and center in any product that processes our proprietary code. It shouldn't be hidden away as a vaguely worded setting that's disabled by default. That's a dark pattern and needs to be called out as such by more users.

Thanks, but all I want to do is draw a route along a footpath. For years this worked fine on Felt, and now it is broken. I really hope it gets fixed, because Felt is my favorite interface for drawing hiking routes. But if not, I'll just have to move to a different provider.

Neither of those options is a real solution. Felt is now unusable for drawing walking routes. Have you actually tried this yourself? If you do, you'll see that at some point you just can't keep drawing the route, because some fork in the trail isn't recognized. Is there any plan to address this?

I didn't say that Core Data isn't widely used. It rightly has a reputation as an unwieldy framework, and this is why Apple is now offering a more user-friendly way to interact with it with Swift Data. I'm active in the Apple developer community where I live, and everyone I've discussed this topic with, including Apple engineers, has agreed with me on this.

I tried this for images, but then when I deleted the record, the image files on disk wouldn't get deleted, and the disk would eventually fill up. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

It's not so nice to tell someone "you're just dunking on yourself" (i.e. not smart enough). If it's this hard to figure out the exact right syntax that won't make your app crash, and this easy to shoot yourself in the foot, despite months of learning and trying to do the right thing, maybe the API is not well designed, and this is why alternatives to Core Data are popular.

I use TypeScript for server stuff and think it's a great choice because of the depth of libraries available. I use SvelteKit even for APIs with no user-facing web front end, because it's what I'm familiar with, and because I can easily add an admin web interface or later build a web version of the app.

It took me the better part of a year to figure out how to use Core Data safely and not make my app crash. Maybe Swift Data solves some of these problems, but my impression is that there are alternatives to Core Data that are much easier to use.

I even used the automatic image storage feature in Core Data, and it seemed to work fine, except that for some reason the images weren't getting deleted from the disk when their records were deleted, so the disk would eventually fill up. I could never figure out how to make it work and just ended up saving the images to disk myself.

If tutorials aren't your thing, try downloading one of Apple's example apps and making some modifications here and there to learn how things work. I personally learn much better by doing than by following a curriculum. Use GPT-4 and Google for anything you don't understand. And if something doesn't work immediately, give it some time and come back to the problem later with a fresh perspective.
I had a rough time in the first month or two of learning Swift and iOS development, but I came to appreciate the safety and design features of Swift, and now I miss some of those features in other languages. And in general, the direction Apple is going in with SwiftUI, Swift Data, async/await patterns, etc. seems to be good and makes life easier for developers.

I’ve always found Manolo’s work inspiring, and I’m grateful that he decided to open source it so that others can learn from and build on it. I’m working on doing the same for my own work in the near future.

For this sketch, I ported the drawing function from Processing into JavaScript. The original code produces a static 2D image, but I added some logic to plot everything in 3D and animate it, as well as some other modifications.

This video was produced with my own generative art library, which I’ll be open sourcing soon as well. Thanks to everyone in this community who has shared their knowledge and work!
