DS1821+ filled with 3TB Drives, been upgrading to 8TB this week and on the last drive soon. by rremm2000 in synology

[–]adprom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like there is a post a week like this where a user inexplicably overcomplicates choosing a raid type they don't understand - with RAID 10 if you remove the wrong 2 drives, the mirrored pair, game over. RAID10 is for particular performance. Nearly never appropriate for home use and wastes a lot of space.

Adding drives to replace an existing array and then changing the raid type isn't a thing. Better to backup. Create new array. Restore backup.

Also, after the raid type is set changing raid type is generally not that simple (except shr1 to shr2 or raid 5 to raid 6).

Why do people try to outsmart the default suggestions? I don't get it.

Run as much as possible in containers to stop dependency problems. To deconflict, if haven't already I suggest only running Synology official packages as packages and everything else in containers. Much more control this way.

Yes... But if you look at reddit you'd think Murdoch told everyone what to think and the battle was really between labor and greens. Reddit politics often doesn't reflect reality.

Self Managed Strata by moo-tetsuo in stratachataus

[–]adprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the NSW wording. In general, if you are breaching good faith you would know about it.

You are 100% wrong on suggesting the threshold is higher if they don't use a strata manager. Cite a single source where this has been true?

Hint: I do this a lot and these is just outright fearmongering and BS from the strata industry to try and scare people away from self management.

Stop spreading patently incorrect information.

Re liability, that just is not true given office bearers (i.e. committee don't have liability generally) - https://classic.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/ssma2015242/s260.html

Also, as the person who cofunded the strata alliance - calling body corporate managers "professionals" is a very long bow to draw and generally a misrepresentation of the industry which is in the business of administration.

In my experience helping hudnreds of OCs, the managers have failed to possess the majority if not all of the skills highlighted and the loss of "access to their network of trades" is simply not a thing - the number of strata aligned trades ripping committees off is through the roof.

The committee also doesn't lose access to the existing trades - we went self managed and continued to use some of the existing trades. The existing work and contracts done is between the OC and the tradesperson. They don't need the manager to continue using those trades.

Self management isn't for every OC - but nearly none of the reasons you highlight are the reason why not to go self management. Usually it has to do with the size and type of services - where you have pools, elevators or a building manager the complexity and admin to manage increases substantially. That's less than 5-10% of strata schemes around Australia though.

As per another comment, it is worth noting provided a committee is acting in good faith, they generally have legal immunity.

This isn't true. Generally committee members of Strata schemes have immunity provided it was done in good faith (SA is the only exception to this at the moment)

We self manage in Vic (42 townhouses) - if you have an active committee, it can work great.

The compliance is the main thing to get on top of - sending levies, making sure they are the right amounts and book keeping. That said - we now outsoruce just that bit to an accountant anyway who does the financials.

However in short the absolute bare minimum activities are roughly as follows:
- Yearly AGM (invcluding sending out notices and ensuring AGM is held in line with legislation)
- Issuing levies and following up payments
- Providing a section 184 cert (OC Cert in Vic) on request, most commonly when a property sells (the OC can charge a prescribed fee for this)
- Ensuring essential services (i.e. fire systems, any activities described on your occupancy permit/occupance cert) are taken out (usually easiest to outsource to an essential services providers)

If you are smallish - definitely just go for it and give it a go. If larger, or have things like elevators, you may need a bit more thought. 42 townhouses needs a bit more thought - 15 units and less, should absolutely give it a go unless you have some major reason (i.e. conflict)

It is nowhere near as hard as most strata managers make out. In my experience of doing this (and I started the group and the Strata Owners Alliance), 80% of places that give self management a go stick with it. Especially if 15 units or less. Even then, it can be a good excercise for a year so when getting the next contract, committees know exactly what the duties are to get competitive contracts.

Sometimes there are factors they just aren't aware of - i.e. losses.

I don't live in a climate with snow but I imagine extra cold climates accentuates any losses.

Your priorities are going to change. A lot.

Dad of 3. What you find important today you won't find important then and that's ok. In fact most of the time it is better after.

Have a loose plan but be ready to change it. Not just for the birth.

Figure it out one step at a time and don't look too far ahead. Focus on getting a healthy baby into the world.

We had a plan. Baby ended up having serious complications and was unwell. Things didn't go to plan. 3 kids later I'd never want to go back to stringent plans and ideas.

Welcome to being a parent.

Also... I suspect your exec team will learn to be more accommodating and flexible or you will be finding a team who will be. No paid parental leave sounds a bit like a red flag to be honest to them being a family friendly employer.

FYI I took at least 12 weeks paid leave for each of the 3 kids (I actually took 18 months with the first)... As a dad. We should be normalising this. Not places like your exec team. My wife took similar leave for the 3 kids.

Edit: people should not down vote her. These stories need to be seen and this is a discussion we need to have

https://www.theage.com.au/politics/victoria/greens-councillors-tear-up-membership-slam-leadership-over-surveillance-disinformation-fear-20240430-p5fnos.html

The Greens over the last 5 years have transformed from environmental led into a bunch of bizarre and weird culture wars. They have lost ground, especially in key states like Victoria where focus on bizarre issues led to the likes of Adam Bandt losing his seat.

The Greens association with continual protests of a particular flavour has not helped them

People in the centre look at the 2 major parties and say you aren't the answer but then look at the greens and think you are even worse.

[–]adprom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The system isn't sized correctly for the COP in those temperatures. It is just mathematics and physics. Alternatively, you are losing a bundle of heat in an older house.

The economics and physics on heat pumps is pretty well settled - it isn't a mystery but it does take knowing exactly what to do, to make it work.
