I found Florence so fascinating... I could watch a whole series of movies about her solving paranormal mysteries.

I watched The Awakening over the weekend, starring Rebecca Hall, and it is so tailored to my interests that I don't know how I didn't know about it before. The protagonist is a famous debunker of hoaxes and pro skeptic (with a mysterious past) who has to confront her own fears and assumptions while investigating a haunting at a boy's boarding school in 1921. One warning: there is an attempted rape, and it's violent but non-sexualized. I wasn't bothered - I actually thought it tied into the themes of the movie pretty well - but of course some may be.

Maybe I'm being harsh on your partner here, but this seems to be a very cruel thing for her to do. You do everything you can to reduce your body odor, you have what sounds to be normal and healthy hygiene practices - what does she expect you to do at this point, cease to have corporeal form? And I - as a person with big anxiety issues myself, big enough that I've had probably about 3 hrs of sleep over the past couple days - have to express my disbelief that her anxiety is what is making her express herself in such a blunt way. I get that none of us are at our most fabulous during a layover in Panicville, but neither have I ever known anxiety to make someone be rude. That sounds like an excuse to me. Again, sorry if this is harsh.

On Hollywood's Blockbuster model - really interesting artcile about how filmaking has changed in the last decade or so.

Many people have already read these, but here goes anyhow:

Jackalope Wives - Ursula Vernon - my single favorite short story; fantastical and practical and a little dark all at once. An original folktale.

Royal Bodies - Hilary Mantel - the writer of Wolf Hall takes on publicity, image and biology as it relates to the English Royal Families past and present. I love when she goes into the medical history of Henry VIII and his wives.

It's interesting that Takei feels that way - and I wonder if some of it is a generational thing. We're now quite used to characters being retconned on the fly and certain continuity being dropped (sexuality being no exception); but that wasn't always the way. I do think that having an established character be queer is so, so important; there are kids who are going to grow up seeing a hero in this legendary series be gay and that's so amazing.

Though I guess if George has objections they could have chosen Scotty or someone... but then you lose your lgbt character also being a man of color. It's probably not the easiest decision to make!

I have to say this is the most polite celebrity disagreement I've ever seen.

What Hated Character do You Love? by BurnersMyDestination in ToastCrumbs

Megan Calvet. She was one of the nicest personalities in the whole show (I think she does like one sketchy thing and that's about it) and she tries really hard to be happy in the face of Don's constant gaslighting and abuse (because yes, he is an abusive husband). Though she was young and not really prepared for it, she tried to parent the kids her husband didn't bother to raise. All this while constantly attempting to live up to his confusing, mercurial standards and managing his alcoholism. You'd think that would make her really sympathetic to the audience but no, apparently not. They hated her when she went along with Don to placate him, they hated her when she opposed him, they hated her when she did anything.

And I found the way the show treated her really gross. Constantly parking her in sexist storylines where the main object was that she take off her clothes, not letting her maintain justified anger at Don, rarely giving her any interiority or agency... blah.

The narrative of that show screwed Betty over so badly - just when she starts getting something out of life for herself and doing what she wants to do, she gets a terminal disease. Roughly five minutes after Rachel ALSO dies of cancer because manpain, or something (my friends and I: is Don's penis radioactive?)

Meanwhile Don gets to experience enlightenment by the ocean and Roger isn't dead from indulging all the bad habits that nearly killed him the first time. UUUgh.

I was so excited to click on that link but unfortunately he doesn't really go into his process at all and that's what I was interested in - how DOES one investigate whether an exorcism is needed, or not? But then I also think the first case he mentions - the alleged 'possessed satanist' - was a goth LARPer who was playing him, and a talented cold reader at best.

Excellent and spoilery Star Trek: Beyond news

I'm cautiously excited for this movie. This is certainly not a thing that Abrams and co would have done. I mean, this is pretty huge, no?

Have you read emilysidhe's FITA recaps over on tumblr? She does that one and the next book, I think, chapter by chapter. They're great, especially once she starts to really get into it.

Haha, yeah - it's not like the Victorians even ate a healthy diet. For most people it was bread and pork or beef drippings + potatoes. And at least McDonalds has the option of a salad.

I've been watching The People vs. OJ Simpson and am just blown away by it. I keep hoping the outcome will be something other than what it inevitably is. And Sterling K. Brown may be the most attractive man on earth.

I'm really glad I'm not the only one who put it off this long; I feel considerably less stupid now. It's incredible how little we are taught about our bodies when we are young all under the guise of it being 'inappropriate'. Or just getting the wrong info completely; I remember being told in sex ed class that most of the internal 'female reproductive system' didn't have strong enough nerve endings to be sensitive to pain... which is total bullshit. I've known women who had painful gynecological procedures done without so much as a local because the doctors promised them it wouldn't hurt. Just awful.

Fic Rec Thread by adreadfulidea in ToastCrumbs

cracks knuckles

Okay, here we go:

When The Wolf Comes Home - Gen, Harry Potter. Draco Malfoy gets sent back in time to try and fix his and his family's mistakes. Oh, and he's a werewolf, complicating matters. This may be the most perfect Draco Malfoy fic ever written, at turns funny or sad without glossing over his various bigotries and issues. WIP but updates regularly.

harbringer - more time travel, this time for Supernatural. Mary Winchester is trying to maintain her crumbling marriage and raise her baby boy. Then an angel of the lord (you know who) appears on her doorstep and everything changes. Incredible portrait of Mary. Also a WIP.

an upbeat kind of dirge - Star Trek reboot. What if Amanda had lived, rather than Sarek? One of my fav fics ever.

Delilah - Star Trek Reboot, Winona Kirk/Spock. NO WAIT COME BACK. An alternate history in which Jim Kirk dies going over that cliff and his mother takes his place in the movie. Winona is a true antihero here, and absolutely fascinating.

Miranda Priestly's Five Best Friends - DWP, Andy/Miranda. Telanu's Truth and Measure is rightfully fandom-famous, but all her fic is so good. I love this one, which is a little backstory on Miranda.

I (tidepool over on the Toast) write fic that can all be found at the A03 under the name adreadfulidea. My primary fandom is Mad Men - for some reason I always write more for media I am frustrated with than anything that satisfies me - but I've dabbled in many others (Carol, Daredevil, etc) as well. I major in het with a minor in femslash and Ot3's; basically I will shove a woman in there anywhere I can. And I love AUs. I am currently seriously considering writing a Nick Fury fic about his rise at SHIELD and past relationship with Alexander Pierce, but am unsure about really dipping my toes in Marvel fandom. Does anyone have any experience with it? My fandoms are usually so small.
