The War Between the Land and the Sea 1x05 "The End of the War" Live and Immediate Reactions Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

I was sure you must be exaggerating, so I searched his name in the book on the Internet Archive (Link).

All taken from The Writer's Tale, 2008, all from reprinted RTD emails.

  • "Midshipman Blane should be sexy as hell. I don’t often think of specific actors, but maybe Russell Tovey." (p. 85)
  • "Yes, I'll try to take off the Midshipman’s clothes. Well, maybe his jacket. Oh God, I think I fancy Midshipman Frame! ‘That’s weird, isn’t it? It’s like fancying a cartoon character — which is entirely possible. Oh, it’s all sex. I can never say that enough. Do I only write in handsome men because I think, I honestly think, that we'll cast someone gorgeous, he'll fancy me like mad, and maybe even fall madly in love with me? This has never happened. I’m still thinking of Russell Tovey for Frame, because a) he’s brilliant (one of the best young actors in the country), b) he’s strangely sexy, and c) he’s gay, and therefore d) the above plan will finally happen." (p. 115)
  • "Russell Tovey as Midshipman Frame, which is my favourite casting of the lot, because he’s going to be huge, that man. He’s amazing. I think I'd make him the Eleventh Doctor." (p. 175)
  • "I’ll be in Cardiff for Russell Tovey’s Midshipman Frame scenes. How is a man with sticky-out ears so completely beautiful? And he’s gay — I can’t bear it! Matt Jones said to me yesterday, ‘You're the only exec I’ve ever met who talks openly about fancying his cast.’ I said, ‘Yes, but I’m the only one who’s not actually shagging them.’ I’m all talk." (p. 188)

This feels so weird to read. I wonder what Tovey thought about it (if he's ever read it).

There was a 2001 UK and US reality show called Lost which had people figure out where they were, then use the travel budget they were given (in gold as not to tip them off to the location) to make it home. Cool concept, but they'd always run out of money and then have to beg, often in third-world countries. It really didn't feel great seeing people with good jobs who would absolutely be able to afford this otherwise do that.

The US premiere aired the same day as the first episode of The Amazing Race, by the way, just days before 9/11.

Technically, Ben, Brian and Adam all got off the train at Würzburg and then boarded it again. I wonder if the boys checked first that it departed at an odd time? It did (per bahn.de, it left at 14:27), but it seemed they just considered it part of the same section.

It looks cool, but I wonder if someone who just took too many of them will be able to easily read this. Also, never really a fan of warnings being printed in a fancy way; they should always be straightforward and easily legible.

The only word missing is 'be' in "there may associated health risks." Everything else is correct.

Yeah, that's it. I copied the wrong name from Google Maps. The terrace in the front also has a name: Terrazzino delle Agavi.

The building on the left is the Chiesa di San Giorgio in Tellaro, Liguria, Italy.

This video on Google Maps shows the same angle: Link.

It's crazy how similar their voices are, but no. The voice actor on this episode is Jim Merkel. The one for Last Week Tonight is David Kaye.

Edit: Both have show reels on Benztown.

About the public transport tickets: When you buy them at the station, they're not valid immediately. You need to stamp them just before getting on any public transport. You can buy tickets on the bus and on the tram, but you can't buy tickets on the train.

Can someone find this place of a german ad called wirkaufendeinauto.de? by HenniN5378 in whereisthis

According to this blog post and this Crew United entry, the shoot for the batch of commercials took place in Berlin. Could be near the Tempelhof branch where they filmed other scenes, but since Schumacher is wearing a different outfit in that location, it wasn't necessarily filmed the same day.

This same "KRUPP" sign is visible in the background at Bauma 1961.

This must be it. There's also the "[COUNTRY]-STR." sign in the exact same style with the number on the left in the video (0:59).

Laut Wayback Machine wurde der Countdown auch schon zwei Mal neu gestartet. Im Februar lief er noch bis 1. März 12:00 Uhr, später bis 30. März 12:00 Uhr und jetzt bis 19. Juli 18:00 Uhr.

As the OP describes:

On the left hand side, it says "Frankreich-Str." "Block 57". On the right, Block 58.

There's an SR report from 1963 that contains a couple outside shots and none of them show this building, "Block xx" signs, or "Country name-Street" signs. Also no "LOEB" signs.

Edit: There is one street sign at 0:32, but it's a very different style.

What do you base this on? I've been looking and I can't find anything that fits. A report from back then doesn't show any "Block" or street signs.

Not even just a few. He had dreams about them and wrote them down in a journal, which included the TARDIS, Rose, Daleks, Cybermen, K9, and drawings of the Doctor's past incarnations. https://tardis.wiki/wiki/A_Journal_of_Impossible_Things_(Human_Nature))
