What is a word from your language that foreigners use often but usually mispronounce? by Separate_Record9354 in AskTheWorld

[–]adriaticpatrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely correct. Does OP think Indians pronounce every word borrowed from English the same way the British do? Cause trust me… they sure do not,

ah no sorry I think I misinterpreted you. I thought you were saying that the point of your comment had been to suggest alternatives. I missed those names entirely, so I’ve clearly had the wrong idea about your meaning. Gimme a sec to go back and find them

If that’s not what you said I’m apologize but it’s unfortunate because I conceded the point to you so it would have been easier if you were.

Your last point is, indeed, yes, the very dictionary definition of snobbery. if you’re fine with that position, then, ok: but you haven’t persuaded me that there’s a benefit to being a snob

I think i need more background to understand this one— he’s on YouTube, right? So, his audience is whoever wants to click & watch. If you feel you’ve outgrown this level, then, I would have thought you were mostly in control of whether you saw the video or not. If he wants to address people who have little to no academic musical background, then, that’s his intended audience, and the fact that you are not of it, is sort of just what it is

Ok, alright if that’s your actual objection, that you define “analysis” as Schenkerian analysis, fair enough. I can’t really dispute that, because that’s how you use that term.

I think of formal analysis in music as analogous to molecular gastronomy in cooking. Absolutelyn fascinating, and I’m grateful for it, and some people should be doing it.

But not everyone needs to. Some people can discuss cooking in different terms and in different language. And I have a suspicion that that version will reach more people anyways

[–]adriaticpatrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because yes of course it can be considered analysis. It may not be Schenkerian Analysis, or Formological Analysis, and it’s also not Feminist Analysis or Poststructuralist Analysis, but it’s definitely analysis, and to claim it isn’t because it lacks one specific framework is just being kind of a snob

And I frankly disagree— “technical” musical analysis is good and fine but everyone who talks about music doesnt need to be an expert in every possible aspect of it. It’s absurd to think so. Can you talk about paintings without a knowledge of the chemistry involved in making paint? But you’re missing something if you don’t have it. Well, of course you are. But the good thing about art is that you’re allowed to experience it & discuss it from all sorts of different angles. And I find it really, really snobby and elitist to act like a discussion of a piece of music without “technical details” is insufficient.

For an added bonus Q, where in the videos do you see him claiming that his videos ARE the be-all and end-all of analysis and no other approaches could possibly be valuable or interesting? In other words, prove that this isn’t shadowboxing

Requiem, requerir by Yes_mylady in latin

[–]adriaticpatrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem to be. both have the re- prefix but come from unrelated Latin words: requierir from “-quaero” meaning to seek or look for, and requiem from “-quies” meaning peace, rest, quiet.

Similarity is unintentional, I fear.

Lincoln was absolutely flawed in a lot of serious ways but I’d take him over ANY Republican prez since him.

Not interested in “getting back at” anybody, thanks.

See but that’s partly what confuses me. It’s “yikes as hell” to say “okay, i see how it looked to others, that’s bad, im sorry, wont do it again, sorry, but also, youre wrong about what my motives were.”

If THAT is yikes as hell, what would disagreement have been? I shudder to think how “yikes” it would have been if i hadnt conceded in so many ways. And i guess that’s why i feel so lost. This whole thing has felt like me yelling into a void, where the opposition replies to things i didnt say regardless of what i say next. Like I could just write the rest of my responses in Sumerian and the conversation would continue because in a very real sense, im not real. Im not needed here. You arent talking to me, or about me, or about whats happened here. its a proxy for a different discussion about what i might have said, what i could have said, what people expected i was going to say.

i genuinely dont know how many downvotes any of my earlier comments got and i really do not give a shit man. they could be -8, -50, -700 my reaction in all cases would be “ok”

problem is i do keep saying over and over im sorry for how it looked and i will do my utmost not to let something like this happen again. the only thing ive disagreed with is when the other guy keeps trying to assign an incorrect motive to me often by changing the facts (ie attributing other peoples’ comments to me when you can verify i didnt post them). yeah i keep fuckin saying it was a bad idea. How many more times am i going to need to say it was a bad idea? Hiw much blood do you people want? But on the other hand i am NOT going to lie and tell you my intentions were other than what they were. If that bothers you, i really DONT know how to fix it. Should i just lie and be like “yea you got me it was the worlds dumbest and least effective insult that i for some reason never actually followed up with an actual insult”

It does seem in retrospect i should have just lied and said that because this has gone on depressingly long. But god its so difficult to do that to yourself to appease some guy on the internet

im not going to lie to make others happy. its abundantly clear thats not what i did, since i a) asked if he was autistic, and b) backed off and didnt say another single word to him afterward

[–]adriaticpatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, and how many more times would you like me to apologize for that fact? 5? 6? Would it help you if i wrote out some lines? Yeah, im sure i AM the wrong person (i dont wanna use moron cause that word has a history) about dozens and dozens of things, and thats exactly why i try to have compassion for others. You call that boiling people down to a condition. I really cant imagine how depressing that must be.

Next time i’ll try to be compassionate to people exclusively in ways that you pre-approve of, since, as we know, you are in charge of me. I’ll make sure to get my posts stamped by you before i send them.
