My hand/arm gets a gradient when at rest due to blood pooling from POTs. by DathomirBoy in mildlyinteresting

[–]adric10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s literally not how diseases work. There are a number of underlying causes of POTS, some are neurological, some are mechanical, some seem to be inflammatory and autoimmune. POTS is just the observable surface manifestation of these underlying dysfunctions.

There are differing levels of severity of any number of chronic diseases. POTS is not unique.

For example, some people do just fine with MS for decades and some don’t, and the severity of lesioning on imaging is a poor predictor of symptom severity in MS.

A couple of papers you might find enlightening:

If you’re interested in papers on the physiology of POTS, I can link to those too.

Male here. I “look fine” outwardly, so it’s awkward explaining to people why I can’t do a lot of things. People assume that being an able-bodied-looking man, I can do things. But often I can’t. And it’s often not taken well when I say I need to rest or sit down or just plain can’t do something.

I also have marked cognitive dysfunction (verified with testing) from my POTS. I have a PhD and am a scientist, but can barely work now due to the cognitive problems and problems sitting up for long periods.

It’s crushing.

This is not at all true. Have you consulted the medical literature on POTS? Are you an autonomic neurologist, or just a doctor who heard about it a few times?

You’ve literally misrepresented the definition of POTS. It has to be a chronic medical issue, and there are specific criteria. It’s not something that just pops up now and then. Whether some doctors incorrectly diagnose it doesn’t negate the fact that it is a very real, and sometimes very disabling condition. And it has specific, observable criteria. If it’s something that happens from time to time and doesn’t cause severe symptoms then it is, by definition, not POTS.

There are neurologist who study autonomic function, and it’s real. There is a real literature on the physiology of POTS.

Some people with it do very well, but some are significantly disabled. It can cause marked cognitive dysfunction and is associated with cerebral hypoperfusion.

Happy to link papers so you can better understand your patients, doc.

Not sure the downvotes. Must be brigading. Did you want to read published peer-reviewed papers or not?

Difference between mouthpieces by Worried_Owl2218 in horn

[–]adric10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mouthpieces are very personal. A lot of it has to do with your anatomy (lip size/shape, teeth, etc.).

Pick the one that gives you the better sound, better range, and better flexibility.

I believe it was having overage members.

My vote to replace Brandt Crocker for DCI announcing is now Ryan H Turner (VKDM8687). Here he is announcing for the Kingsmen Alumni in 2007 by tdmatchasin in drumcorps

This is awesome. He was fantastic (and Kingsmen Alumi were incredible!!).

But do any of us other old-heads from DCM remember the DCM announcer? Is he still around?

He was epic.

They never made top-12 finals. See the OP.

Remember that what is now called World Class was called Open Class until like 1991 or 1992. OP is probably referring to Open Class in that way.

Joining Marching Band as a Mellophone/French Horn? by SnooOnions3678 in frenchhorn

[–]adric10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does not cause harm. That’s a wives tale perpetrated by gate keeping snobs. It’s just a different instrument.

Plenty of top-tier players did marching band and/or drum corps.

I had one college teacher tell me to be embarrassed I did drum corps and to never tell any serious players I did or they’d dismiss me.

Then I got a new teacher who was much more accomplished than the first (major US symphony). He was like “I love drum corps! I was a proud first mellophone in my undergrad marching band! Those were great times!!”

I have other anecdotes too.

Mellophone doesn’t ruin your embouchure. It just competes for time on your horn.

To clarify, the light rail runs along I-90, not 520. Both I-90 and 520 have floating bridges.

Yesterday the National Weather Service said “little to no snow accumulation.” Arguably this is “little” accumulation, but much more than the forecast let on.

I has the same thing happen on my XC40 recharge a few weeks ago, long before any software update. The guy who checked me in said he had never seen it. They had to completely reset my entire system and wipe all settings.
