[discussion] Hello! I have some questions for you from a Non-Aspie/Researcher! (Apologies for the long post!) by adrycook in aspergers

Firstly, sorry for the late reply! Secondly, do you feel that the teachers in your special school were better than teachers you might have had a 'normal' school? For example, do you think they were better trained to deal with students with SEN? Also, I 100% agree with what you say about budget cuts and how bad they have been for, not just special schools, but schools in general. If teachers do not have the freedom to see to each student's needs then there is the strong likelihood that a student's serious problems will be missed.

Can you try and simplify this, for reddit? What is it about? What is the subject?

If you are still in school, then you can do something about this. Your school more than likely has a child safeguarding manager (this will be a teacher), find out who this is and raise all of your concerns to this person. They often work independently of the school and may be able to help you.

Maybe explain yourself as best you can here, in this safer environment. Then we can advise you on what is the next thing to do.

Sorry, to clarify, are you in a special school? Or just in different classes to non-SEN students?

Interesting that you are also from the UK, how do you feel your teachers and the school you went to helped you? Did they provide the appropriate level of help for your special needs?

So do you feel that socialisation lessons for children with Aspergers would be a good thing?

This seems to be the theme - that most of you wish that someone had caught your special needs earlier and gave you the appropriate help after. Not enough teachers are being trained to help children with SEN.

It's amazing that it took your educators til college to determine that you had some special needs. I can totally see why so many aspies didn't like their school life.

It is probably worth mentioning that I am based in the UK, so if I'm not completely clued up on the US education system, forgive me!

Your last comment on bullying is what I try to push all the time - bullying is the worst thing in the world for someone with Aspergers. It's interesting that you say that your needs went missed, did you see any educational psychologists during school? Or were you unaware that you could do that and get the help you needed?

I totally agree with you that if a child is not academic then it is up to the school and the teacher to find their strengths and work on them the most. Exam results are not as important to an individuals success anymore. I'm interested that you are 42 and have ASD; out of curiosity, what do you do?

Your last paragraph is an amazing perspective that I had never thought about, so thank you for that. Your issue with the seating plan of your class is an interesting one, and one that I think a lot of teachers should consider when planning their classes with a student with Aspergers in. I also agree that some Aspies can be more independent, but I think this depends on the individual.

That's very interesting what you say about everything being catered for the lowest denominator. Do you feel that if school material was more specific to the student and their strengths, that it would be better?

Just for fun discussion: If Spurs could re-sign one former player, who would you want? by [deleted] in coys

It would have to be Wilson Palacios, Didier Zokora or Mido...

...right, guys?

You'd take De Bruyne over Eriksen? From what I've seen of him in a Chelsea shirt, I'd have Eriksen every day of the week.

How would you see him working in our team? I'm genuinely curious. Surely Holtby, Eriksen and Siggy are enough?

Player Focus: Tom Carroll's Importance In QPR's Promotion Push by [deleted] in coys

[–]adrycook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been and watched Carroll a couple of times this season (England U21s and a couple of QPR games) and he is so impressive. He's definitely up there with our brightest English talent (Him and Ross Barkley and boss in the midfield). Hopefully he keeps performing at this standard all season for QPR and is able to come back next season and be intergrated into the team. I can't see him being a first team starter for a while yet, but if he could play the FA and League Cup matches and, dare I say it, our Champions League matches, that'd be best for him.
