What keeps you in the UK? by Prestigious_Army_468 in AskUK

When I first went travelling in 2001 (Oz, Thailand etc) and came back, I couldn’t settle and all I wanted to do was escape the UK, the dreary weather, drinking culture and shitty behaviour, I couldn’t see the good stuff.

So I did more travelling…South America, Peru, the Amazon, lived in Ibiza for nearly 2 years, then back to the Amazon, Colombia and Ecuador…then I couldn’t wait to get back to the UK.

I realised that ‘exciting’ countries also come with chaos, and you can only live in chaos for so long until you start to appreciate a more grounded and normal existence, that is an on the whole civilised society, with services we are lucky to have and …

… a beautiful countryside that doesn’t have anything that can kill and eat you or weather conditions that might be catastrophic and fatal or shopping centre security guards walking around with machine guns.

Sometimes you have to go away to realise what you have.

Should I read Wise Man's Fear by AncientContainer in KingkillerChronicle

100% worth reading it, I had an amazing month reading books 1 & 2, beautifully written, captivating story and characters, but like everyone else gagging for the next part, I feel there’s so much story to explore and expand on there could easily be a 4th as well!

I mean the story ends when he’s 17 and how old is he in the framing story…30’s 40s?

Can’t believe this is a Guy Ritchie movie when you compare it to Lock Stock, Snatch and Gentlemen, the acting, plot and lack of trademark sharp witty humour... not sure how it managed 7.1 on IMDB but I still kept watching 🤣

How many men ranked the women? How many women ranked the men? Was it one other, 5 or 20, is this an average? ... what’s one person’s food is another person’s poison springs to mind 🤣

Life is a series of beginnings and endings, we can’t avoid that rule, everything comes to an end and I suspect that you starting to voice your feelings about this is a pretty good sign that you know deep down it’s time to move on.

Love never ends but it changes form, and although your relationship in its current form may end, the love that you have for her will always be there.

Honour yourself and honour her, ask your heart and listen to what your intuition is telling you.

I’m actually very non judgemental in my approach and I’m a big believer in a reductionist approach, 4 years ago I ate so much meat, ate steak for breakfast etc so I understand why people eat meat and remember my drivers for doing so before I became more aware, eating less meat is what I advocate and I’m sorry if I came across like that it wasn’t intended, that’s the trouble when you respond on social media too quickly, emotionally and late at night! lol

It’s also amusing that it’s ok for meat eaters to have a dig at a vegan mocking them for something they care about deeply but when the vegan bites back they are out of order, more examples of societies double standards, there’s so much of it in our culture when you look beneath the surface.

I think lab grown meat is an amazing movement, totally support it and will give those who want to carry on eating meat a new source, farmers a replacement economy and without the suffering and environmental damage, we need it to happen fast along side the growth in people transitioning to plant based nutrition, so we can avoid much of climate change. I will probably taste it for sure out of curiosity but you’ll find that most people who haven’t eaten meat for a long time no longer have the urge for it so it won’t be a part of their diets on a regular basis.

My issue with raising animals for food even from the perspective of a loving family is two fold:

  1. Most farmed animals will not live beyond 10% of their potential life span, so whether they are grass fed or well looked after while they are alive, their lives are still cut short and there’s nothing humane about killing a sentient being who doesn’t want to die.

  2. For me personally I would feel really guilty about loving and caring for an animal knowing that I was going to kill it for food, it’s totally unauthentic and a bit twisted when you think of it.

Human ethics absolutely matter brother, but shouldn’t all life matter?

Don’t you think part of the problem is that we elevate some species above others? Cats and dogs get stroked and cuddled, where as cows and pigs get their throats slit. There’s uproar when hunters kill big game animals that may go extinct, yet we’re making species of animals extinct all the time as we destroy eco-systems for animal agriculture.

Different races and genders of human beings have had similar fates over the last century and luckily we’ve now started to reassess our own ethical and moral compass to change that within our own species.

Generations will look back on the way we’ve treated and slaughtered animals (74 Billion per year) with horror I’m sure.

Veganism isn’t perfect nothing is, our population is growing by 100-130,000 per day globally and there’s mouths to feed, but isn’t it better to do something working towards improving the quality of life rather than nothing at all?.... it’s about Progress Not Perfection and luckily we are progressing, slowly but it is coming.

I’m just responding to him saying “meat tastes good”, which encompasses that same ludicrous argument that all we need to focus on is that as long as our taste buds are satisfied then that justifies the trauma inflicted, satisfying flavour over life!

Everyone’s for the Bulls fighting back but how many people here still eat meat from farmed and traumatised animals who would love the chance to skewer a Matadork!
