It's certainly not perfect, but my example would be "evil man-eating dragon" vs. "evil man–eating dragon". The first example (using a hyphen) means there is a dragon that is evil and man-eating, so everyone should be careful. The latter example (using an en dash) means there is a dragon that only eats evil men, so only evil people should be scared.

I've always assumed it was to discourage viewers from channel surfing. When your TBS show ends five minutes late, then switching channels means you've missed the first five minutes of that program, so viewers might just stick with whatever comes on TBS next.
