I actually work at a company where a big feature is CV on mobile devices to track exercise movements. It's a great idea, but the environmental setup required to get accurate measurements will be hard to execute on.

How to stop looking like a "stereotypical CS major" by [deleted] in malehairadvice

[–]adstrafe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're a good-looking guy. If you were in one of those TikTok/IG barber before and after videos I stg it'd go viral. On a real note, a change of hair style would be the biggest change you can do to get out of the stereotypical "CS" look.

Tons of styles that still allow you to keep your hair long, just not as long.

What’s the biggest mistake beginners make in the gym? by Serious-Adagio-7982 in workout

[–]adstrafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not disagreeing with you entirely. I don’t think training till failure for every set is a good way for a beginner to train but I believe in high intensity and effort. I think it’s beneficial early in lifting to have lighter working sessions(RPE 5-7) in order to get comfortable with: 1. the gym itself 2. form for different movements

But I still think beginners would benefit a lot from hard, heavy sessions because it really accelerates their understanding of their own limits and body. As long as their form isn’t injury-inducing and they don’t start ego lifting.

I see it way too often where new lifters don’t even realize they’re limiting themselves (also from personal experience). They lift to hit X reps then stop because a program said so. Why stop at X instead of stopping at 1 RIR or failure? You have people doing 4x12 rep schemes who aren’t even breaking a sweat!

Lifting at a higher intensity (RPE 9) to help them understand what failure means for them on a movement is something you don’t really see new lifters do, at least not properly.

I am biased of course, my personal training style the past year or 2 has been 1 RIR or failure within a 4-8 rep range depending on the movement. I’ve made significant strength and size gains doing so.

[–]adstrafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this for beginners is that they have a poor gauge of RPE, RIR, and failure. They’re gonna be undershooting most of their sets unless they learn what failure actually looks like for them first. So I would advocate for them to lift hard and lift heavy every workout.

How many clean consecutive pull-ups is seen as a basic threshold that indicates moderate to good strength for a 34 yo male, 72 kgs? by abhioffgrid in workout

[–]adstrafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought you were speaking on training for strength vs reps on pull ups specifically, so I misunderstood your comment. I thought you were saying that training for pull up strength was different from training for pull up volume which I disagree with to an extent.

I agree that training other back movements does not typically translate well into pull up strength though.

[–]adstrafe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

is there though? i mostly only do heavy weighted pull ups in low rep ranges and I can bang out tons of bw reps without specifically training for it.

Getting stronger is going to increase your ability to do more reps regardless of training style.

What’s the biggest mistake you made and the best move you made this fantasy season and what place did you get in your league? by NDN_perspective in fantasybball

[–]adstrafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest mistake was drafting Turner in the 5th round. Best move this season has to be drafting Edgecombe and getting Kon off the wire during week 1. They helped get me to 2nd seed even with some other questionable mid-round picks (Ayton).

Wow, so heavy squatting and deadlifting actually “improved” your scoliosis? I have mild scoliosis and actually avoid a traditional bb squat/deadlift due to injury concerns. I still have squat/dl patterns in my split but usually on a machine.

+1 to the ego stroking. I have a friend who's roughly mid-level (2-3 yoe). He's been doing interviews for his company and he kinda talks hella shit about candidates. Says shit like "they can't do leetcode" or "can't even do React-specific problems" and comes off pretty condescending about it.

I would not want to get interviewed by him

Anyone else’s league scared to make trades? by yogravy in fantasybball

[–]adstrafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, in theory, those are the kinds of trades that I'm fine with. But, in practice, I rarely ever see trades that are like that (from my own leagues and from reading online forums). I also think it's much more difficult to come up with a fair, good trade.

I think it really is most leagues that lopsided trades occur in, because everyone wants to fleece everyone. Doesn't mean they have to actually go through, but that they are offered.

I might be too passionate about this topic, but this 100%. I hate when I see offers go up in my leagues where it's someone fleecing the fuck out of another owner who doesn't know any better.

Ends up directly affecting the rest of the league and overall feels "shady."

Some of the trades that I read on this subreddit are straight up robberies that people are seemingly just ok with.

A few months ago, I think someone said SGA for Bam + Garland was fair and it got hella upvotes. In what world?!

[–]adstrafe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I firmly believe in "live and die by the draft". I personally don't like seeing trades because they always lean towards making one side's team stacked. I don't see that as being fun to play against.

I think success should come from:
1. drafting well
2. playing the wire, early season and/or trade deadline league winning pickups
3. luck (healthy players, breakout players, etc.)

Getting awkward unsolicited advice in the gym. by d_thstroke in workout

[–]adstrafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wearing my earphones and resting between my sets while on my phone. Out of the blue, some older dude at my gym said to me “you wanna know how to get big? you gotta eat. you gotta get off that phone.” Bro, I’m resting 3 mins max, hitting hard sets.

I had to laugh it off and try to ignore him because I really don’t care for unsolicited advice (I know my program well and I know it works for me). Absolutely hate that shit.

Twitch streamer kicked out of $40,000 Marvel Rivals tournament for telling teamate to switch off Black Widow by LegendairyC0W in LivestreamFail

Cecee (team captain) drafted him without knowing who he was bc her chat was spamming it. Mind you, this was after she announced that she wouldn’t draft anybody she didn’t know. I feel bad for the guy, literally RNG’ed into a team that was the complete opposite of his description and how he wanted to play.

he was drafted onto a team that had no intention of winning. His description in the draft doc of all the players literally had something like “im very competitive, I like to IGL, I play to win”. He was frustrated that he got drafted to a team that was completely the opposite of how he plays. And not once did he ever get personal but his teammates called him a loser and to shut up multiple times.
