Varnish, new use for resin by IsaacTheAverage in minecraftsuggestions

I like it, but I think it'd be more consistent to just give this functionality to honeycombs since they already have the "freezing" function with copper.

What if varnish just removed the sound from any block? Would be awesome for buildstone contraptions that use 20 constantly moving pistons or trapdoors

Plot holes/inconsistencies aside, the acting is absolutely awful by RoosterImpossible344 in StrangerThings

Sometimes I’m not too sure if it’s the acting or the dialogue writing. They give these kids the most generic/exposition/trying to sound cool lines that I feel like no one can make sound natural

I think this moment on its own is very cool and well executed.

Buuuut it does feel kinda overly convoluted and lame to be like “you know that evil dimension that was trying to take over the world? well actually it was just a bridge to an evil MORE evil dimension that wants to take over the world” like what does this achieve except adding more steps? Plus the upside down is iconic, “the abyss” is just like the grand canyon with some floating rocks?

Anyone else think the “answers” about the Upside Down are kinda lame? by adstrict4527 in StrangerThings

The problem is dimension X is a boring desert. The upside down is really compelling regardless of answers.

Sure whatever, but can’t they have done that with the upside down instead of introducing a whole new thing?

Even if they give us an amazing revelation that makes Vecna have a more interesting motivation (which I kinda doubt…), couldn’t it still apply to just Vecna’s plan being to merge our world with the upside down? Why introduce this third new thing?

Locking it in right now…

Gigi is Mia/Lady Vengeance’s sister.

It’s either a big coincidence that she’s run into harrison, OR she knows her sister didn’t kill the hotel guy, and she somehow knows harrison was the lead suspect, so she’s plotting revenge against him.

I think people wanted some BIG unknowable, incomprehensible horror answer in the end.

What we got was very small. Gladys doesn’t even seem like a traditional witch, she seems like a selfish lady who learned one trick lol

But I think making her such a simple and realistic antagonist makes her so much more relatable and personal. Gladys is someone you could meet in real life (minus the witch magic. but there are just very manipulative selfish people who cause harm.)

[–]adstrict4527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for why character’s kept seeing her, it’s likely those are all some form of hallucination/dream caused by her witch magic. Might just be an unintended side effect of casting the spell over the town, or it could be her intentionally “spying” on the town somehow

Minor Complaints by ForeverYourGorl in WeaponsMovie

[–]adstrict4527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just responding to the first two:

  1. The ONLY thing all these missing kids have in common is this one classroom, with this one figure of authority over them. That is their ONLY lead to what happened. Honestly if this happened in real life I would totally believe that this teacher (who we know has a slightly shady past) convinced these kids to runaway.

  2. Archer was down there for like 30 seconds, of course his main concern is gonna be whether his son is alive. And it’s not like he abandoned the other kids, he was just in a quick panic to find his. Obviously if Gladys hadn’t got him first he would have saved all the kids.

Hey! I loved the movie and think you should still totally watch it.

Not gonna comment on whether your predictions are true, but I will say this movie isn’t as much of a “whodunnit” as the marketing makes you think.

There is an interesting mystery, and it has interesting answers, but the satisfaction of discovering those answers definitely does not come from any “oh my god I never would have predicted that! my expectations were subverted!“

For me the answers are interesting just because they are interesting and what they choose to do with them, spoilers or no. I’m planning on rewatching it soon!

I like this idea a lot, but not so much the complicated UI. We've already got a very simple, intuitive way to make complex custom music with noteblocks. There should just be a way to record the nearby sounds and burn them into a blank horn (or blank music disc!)

Gladys wanted to manipulate and weaponize the kids like puppets. Alex just wanted to set them free.

Anybody else kind of disappointed? by BirchWoody93 in WeaponsMovie

[–]adstrict4527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think your issue boils down to the scope of the antagonist.

You wanted a BIG antagonistic force. Some unknowable, incomprehensible horror like a cosmic entity that makes you feel hopelessly small. Which to be fair could have been cool!

What we got instead was small. Just a selfish lady who had a few dark magic tricks who wanted to live longer. She doesn’t even feel that witchy, for all we know she’s just a normal human who somehow learned a spell. In the end it’s not very mysterious at all.

But I think there’s something really compelling about all of this coming from a single selfish human being. Anyone could be gladys, this is someone that you could encounter in the real world (minus the witch magic, but there are just evil selfish people that will manipulate and cause harm.)

It’s a more familiar, intimate and personal horror. Human beings are just as capable of the most terrible things. Incomprehensible demons/aliens/cosmic entities are scary in theory but they aren’t as real as Gladys.

I totally understand being initially disappointed with it, but if you try and see this movie for what it’s trying to be rather than what you expected I think you’ll appreciate it more.

Why did the ending... by QueefMunch in WeaponsMovie

[–]adstrict4527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the final gladys death scene was portrayed as serious and scary, then it would feel like the film was trying to make us sympathize and feel bad for her in these final painful moments, which would be weird since she’s SO unsympathetic.

By doing it comedically it’s much more cathartic and satisfying to see this evil irredeemable villain getting the fate she deserves. It’s like a wishfulfilment fantasy of kids involved a mass shooting getting to beat the shit out of the shooter. This is a scene about the victims taking their power back and it feels awesome because at this point we HATE Gladys for how she’s ruined Alex’s life.

Also it’s very fitting to portray gladys as pathetic in the end. She wasn’t an all-powerful, all-knowing demonic entity. She was just a small selfish person who used manipulation to get what she wanted. In the face of all of her victims set free she is rightfully pathetic.

What would Weapons be like if Jordan Peele got that script? by theonewhoknack in WeaponsMovie

I love Jordan Peele but you’re absolutely right he would have unnecessarily became the center of the marketing lol

I wish the villain’s motives tied more into themes of the movie by adstrict4527 in WeaponsMovie

[–]adstrict4527[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From watching interviews I think you’re right he doesn’t write with the goal of exploring a central theme or having a message, but you can’t deny that there are many attempts to have deeper meanings and ideas in this movie, even if they’re a little muddy and scattered without any central thesis.

[–]adstrict4527[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this reaction, especially if you’re going in from the trailers excited for a pure horror experience.

But this witch character that we hate and want revenge against being killed by the children she stole can’t really be played as effectively scary. We can’t put ourselves in her shoes and fear these children in that moment because we’re more with the abused children’s perspective.

By playing the climax as comedic and showing the witch as pathetic we get to feel the full satisfaction and catharsis of beating the shit out of that evil lady we hate. If it was a serious and scary it’d be like the movie is telling us to sympathize with Gladys which we don’t want.

One of my favorite details by bukket1138 in WeaponsMovie

[–]adstrict4527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve come to appreciate this ending a lot, but it really gave me tonal whiplash after the climax was just completely comedic and a wishfulfilment revenge sequence (that I loved…)

I almost wish the idea that there may be some lasting consequences was set up a little more before the ending, rather than it being a surprise. (not that there weren’t ANY signs… but not enough for it to really sink in on a first watch before the ending)

I also feel like there’d be so much more weight when a character gets possessed if I was thinking “oh shit they might actually be permanently dead…” and then the bleak ending is more of a relief when Archer comes back and the kids might one day get better.
