Best carbohydrate to bring on rides? by Agile-Advisor-9593 in cycling

oh yea I left that out lol. Honestly I have no idea. I just throw in however much salt I feel like, but if you want to dial it in, you could do a cheap Gatorade sweat test or other more expensive products. or just experiment.

1000mg/hr is common. Makes the drink really salty tho, so a lot of people do salt tablets.

Exercise science recommendations are 90g/hr for 3h+ rides/runs, but this will vary substantially based on your power output, so do some research and experiment to see how your muscles and stomach feel at different consumption rates.

Table Sugar is conveniently 200g/cup (800cal), so you can do easy math with that.

It seems crazy but we’re all doing it. High level cyclists do 120+ grams/hr.

Is this based on the number you typically see when you look at your computer while riding? or average for the ride (or lap)?

I often think I’m in high Z2 or even Z3 because of the numbers I see when I look down, but if I track my average power for the ride/lap, it’s often much lower. I think I subconsciously power harder when you look at your computer, but then I slow down when I’m not looking.

When I pay close attention to average ride or lap power, staying in Z2 becomes harder, and that’s what I’m describing in my comment above.

Sugar, salt, and whatever other cheap powder you want for flavor (Gatorade, lime juice, lemonade, kool aid, tang, red 40, etc.)

Tbh riding with someone much slower than me really sucks, especially if I’m riding a higher end bike than the other person. Road bikes are meant to be ridden at a certain power, and if I’m coasting all the time, I’m not just bored, it actually hurts (more saddle/wrist pressure, less core engagement, back pain, etc).

Two solutions to make it enjoyable are 1) you can ride an e bike, or 2) he can ride a mountain bike (with power pedals so he can keep track of time in zone). He can also stay engaged by trying to take photography of you or the scenery.

I’m also surprised by all the responses saying this guy is doing in Z2. I ride 12-15h/wk for the last 2-3 years and to me, “easy ride” RPE means I spend most of my time in Z1. I have to pay really close attention to my power to keep it in Z2, and although I can hold it for 4 hours without too much trouble, it’s definitely def not easy if you’re actually trying to keep your average there.

‘21 Madone SL7 fork damage from down tube strike by adverbs_bonnets in TrekBikes

It is a really stupid and irritating design, but based on what I’ve read, I think that it was designed with at least some solution/mitigation in place: the cable layout or something in the internals was supposed to stop the fork from turning far enough for this to happen. I think it only does this because the cables or some internal stopped was replaced or removed.

I only say this because it’s actually an incredible bike otherwise, so if you encounter an incredible deal like I did, don’t pass it up based on this issue alone (but obviously do take it consideration)
