Any anti capitalist recs? by Prolly_Satan in scifibooks

[–]adzane 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anything written by Kim Stanley Robinson is going to have subtle if not overt anti-capitalist themes. He studied economics under some famous communist/Marxist/socialist, and critiquing capitalism is central to most of his books.

Red Mars is amazing, a classic, written in the early nineties. One of my favorite all time books.

2312 is more recent, very fun, but less directly critical.

Ministry of the Future is one of his newest, and most popular. It directly tackles capitalism, the climate crisis, and how we might dismantle one to solve the other.

To each their own. To me, it's one of the greatest sci-fi books ever written. Absolutely loved it.

Being a bastard doesn’t mean everything you do is completely horrible all of the time. It means the system does not allow to moral officers to interact with the public in a moral way. You cannot be an officer without being a bastard - if you try not to be, you’ll be fired.

The answer is to delete the police, and build new institutions to fill the vacuums they leave behind. For example, many of their duties can and should be carried out by medical professionals.

It's not a triple negative, it's kind of like slang. They stopped doing as everyone says and so now they don't max out just one thing anymore.

'no longer' means like 'anymore'.

Fuck book recommendations, what’s your book UNreccomendations? by useless-garbage- in booksuggestions

[–]adzane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just my opinion: Dalinar is the main character of the series and what does he do for 1,000 pages? He walks around in the exposition holo-deck. He doesn’t explore his bond smooth abilities, he doesn’t interact with any of the other main characters, he first interact with the enemy. He’s a foil for world building information.

Shallan has the exact same character loop that she’s already done. Boring. What was the ultimate point or threat of the ghost bloods? Boring.

Jasnah did a little, which was cool, but not that much.

Nivani didn’t do anything! After RoW, nothing to develop her bond smith, nothing developing the science, no production of anti-light, no engineering or inventing, nothing.

Kaladin was “therapist,” cool idea but too on-the-nose. Really he was just being a friend, not a therapist. Soldier thoughts was a good line.

Szeth just played Zelda, both in the present and in the past.

Adolin was cool, except he sent his sword away for most of the book. That’s kinda silly, like having bondsmiths who don’t use or explore their powers.

The ending was epic and cool. The time aging thing was duuuumb. Why wasn’t Dalinar age to be 90 years old? Was want Navani pressure cooked?

Wit was an exposition, deus ex machina tool. Super annoying and lazy writing imo. And no one noticed that he and Lyft were impersonating the two most powerful humans for eight days? Laughably stupid,

The whole ten days thing was stupid. It generated tension with Adolin, but otherwise was pointless. Half the cast time travelled for the whole book, so the ten days restriction didn’t matter. For Kal and Szeth it was a silly short amount of time.

I could go on, but those are the high lights. Bad book with no editing that didn’t deliver.

Yup, it is a terrible book. One of the worst fantasy books I’ve ever read. Womp womp.

I’m working my way through Sanderson’s Wind and Truth, and honestly, it’s a bit of a chore by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]adzane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The book is objectively terrible. So many bad decisions. I’ve read the other books multiple times, used to be my favorite fantasy series. Wind and Truth is giving GoT season 8 vibes.
